The year 2020 brought with it a nation riddled with grief as the United States descended into a raging pandemic, steep economic downfall, and unsettling political instability. As half a million perished and millions were left jobless from coronavirus, what was really going on inside the White House? And who was influencing Donald Trump as he refused to concede power after an election he had clearly lost?
Washington Post reporters Carol Leonnig and Philip Rucker answer these questions for the American people in I Alone Can Fix It, a gripping exposé of an administration sabotaging its own country. Their sources were in the room as Trump and the key players around him-doctors, generals, senior advisors and family members-continued to prioritize the interests of the president over that of the country. These witnesses saw firsthand Trump’s desire to deploy military force against protests in the wake of George Floyd’s death. They saw his refusal to take coronavirus seriously, even to the point of allowing himself and those around him to be infected. They, along with the rest of the world, saw him spur on what would become the January 6 storming of the U.S. Capitol building.
With unparalleled access, Rucker and Leonnig delve into exactly who they say enabled-and who foiled-the president as he desperately held onto his fleeting presidency in his final year in office. Join us as Leonnig and Rucker reveal the inner workings of the 2020 Trump White House.

I imagine journalists have a bit of PTSD after covering Trump for this many years. My mental health certainly suffered, merely based on what I saw and read every day. I can't imagine the added weight of feeling responsible for making sure this insanity got reported by the hour. It was a 24/7/365 trainwreck, with life and death implications. Pretty much a war zone. My sincerest gratitude to you all.

Because over half of Republicans still support him. It is also because we have a history of not going after former presidents as many other countries have done, with very bad results. Cycles of mayhem and violence, and terrorism. The situation is further complicated by the several congressional Republicans who were involved in the insurrection. Not to mention the near unanimous support of Trump by Republican politicians and right wing media. Right now, the Democrats are in the uncomfortable position of deciding which will be worse, prosecuting Trump and his minions, or putting on a political ‘show trial’ that again lets him escape justice while reminding people of how bad he is. There is no good resolution of this situation, but I come down on your side ultimately.

He has been getting away with crimes for decades using any means open to him and especially as a confidential informant selling out those higher in the criminal hierarchy. That won't work now and a big part of his fight to stay in office was to avoid indictments. Knowing far more about his history the prosecutors know they need a meticulous airtight case that tfg can NOT wiggle out of, no loopholes that could be exploited. That takes time and efforts we aren't even aware of. They could never prosecute Al Capone for his myriad crimes BUT they got him on tax charges. He died in prison. I'm sure there were people he hurt who weren't satisfied but at least he was held accountable. I hope tRUmp has the same fate. I'd love to see him held accountable for negligent homicide but I'll settle for whatever puts him in a cell. I just hope it happens. Patience is very hard at times.

I believe Phillip Rucker was talking when they said that they’d learned from people who were close to trump over the years might actually say, on occasion and very carefully: “you know, sir, what you just said was incorrect. Right?” And trump would invariably come right back and say something to the effect of “yes, but it doesn’t MATTER.” He probably thinks that saying something as the means to an end is important … the truth be damned.

Look what happened in Hong Kong, Myanmar and Belarus. If trump wasn't in office, maybe these slides in democracy wouldn't have occured. As an American, I don't have much faith left in rational thought over here. Half of Americans have lost their minds, and will deny what they can see with their own eyes. Half our government is fine with sedition and fascism. Look what happy to Hungary. Viktor Orban lost power, then came right back.

Trump was just the blunt spike that could be hammered into America's fault lines. Saying that the institutions held during his (and I use this word very loosely) presidency is not that significant a virtue, since America is supposed to be a major Western developed country. The real take-away is that Trump completed a 4 year presidential term due to most of the GOP, most of Conservative media and millions of voters who were either manipulated or enthusiastic in support of him, or who just cared about doing a bit better financially despite Trump's almost complete unfitness for public office and the transparently dishonest and cowardly political support he commanded. This is Donald John Trump. A tenth rate con man and near illiterate fool. This is not the kind of person who should ever have been able to undermine any institution.

@deniz yazz What does it feel to share in your Leader’s suffering? As the cadence of his voice rises to that irresistible climax, don’t you feel it deep in your loins; the anger at the injustice and the pain! His pain, Your pain, in sync we March together into the abyss, this is the death of the soul; you now are nothing, you have been subsumed into the cause! One Country, One Folk, one Fuhrer!’ That’s what you enable! ‘When a man believes his own lies he falls into disrespect to himself and to others; in disrespecting himself, he is incapable of love. Such a man descends to the level of bestiality; and all because he lies!’ Dostoyevsky. Trump destroys himself by his lies and is incapable of love. His thinking is not abstract but concrete; the only abstract noun he relates to is hate! He enjoys inflicting suffering on others; to dismiss someone is not enough, he chooses to assassinate his character also; CHOOSES! Hate is his oxygen, he draws on your hatred if you let him! He only understands rule by diktat; ‘It stops here and it stops now;’ Trump’s inaugural speech! A diktat! Democracies are governed through agency, the agency of self interest, of enfranchisement, of appeal; all abstract agencies. Trumpkind is incapable of understanding this! But there can be no freedom at the end of a gun! Freedom cannot be imposed! Trump’s last days were like those 19th century madmen who thought they were Napoleon; Trump was a Napoleon in name only!
