Frankly, We Did Win This Election, authored by The Wall Street Journal’s senior White House reporter Michael Bender, reveals a deeply reported account of Donald J. Trump’s final year as president of the United States-from his first impeachment in January 2020 to his second almost exactly a year later.
Bender chronicles Trump and his campaign team as they struggle through an epic convergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, the ensuing economic collapse, and the civil rights upheaval that unraveled their reelection strategy. Bender’s refined sourcing brings readers within the walls of the White House for the inside story of how Trump lost, drawing a straight line from his presidency to his defeat and ultimately to the deadly storming of the U.S. Capitol building.
Bender joined The Wall Street Journal in 2016 and has since published more than 1,100 stories about Trump. He has been recognized for his coverage, receiving both the Gerald R. Ford Foundation Journalism Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency in 2019 as well as the National Press Club award for political analysis in 2020.
Join Bender and moderator Maggie Haberman, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist from The New York Times, as they go into the exclusive details of how Donald J. Trump lost the 2020 election.

I’m in Europe and my ex son in law is a disciple of Trump. He’s filled my 9 yr old grandsons head with apocalyptic scenarios, the child telling me that I’ll die soon because I’m vaccinated. He’s now seeing a psychiatrist because of hoarding and anxiety issues. Trump gave these ideas oxygen and moved it mainstream. I loathe him to my bones.

So sorry to hear that an outside influence like that made such a big difference period that is tragic indeed. Just focus on your grandson and love and keep him aware that you are there no matter what he thinks and there is always a safe place to come and talk and he might just work his way back out! So so sorry. I have found that life's tragedies often prepare us for future callings so maybe this evil will end up being used to help others for good. All of us fail it's just a matter of what we do with it. Never quit. Stay strong in love and be the way of Hope and safety if some light does get shed into that Darkness.

Amen, Julie. Trump is agony and the fascism is real. If you haven't yet, watch the Lincoln projects most recent ad, I believe it's called "NEVER AGAIN", in honor and observance of the 77th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It is narrated by wonderful actor Peter Coyote, who must be in his eighties but sounds exactly as he always did, handsome guy as well. You will not be able to look away and you will have tears. The parallels drawn in the narration spoken by Coyote, comparing the insanity and vile in humanity of Nazism to what we are facing in Trump's Republican Party right now, their ugly, soulless and craven beliefs and the brazen permission they give themselves to hate overtly once again is the stuff of nightmares. They have to be stopped. We have to keep repeating, never again, and we have to believe it, mean it and carry that intention to the polls in first, 22. We can't stop them from their egregious mindsets, but we can vote them out. We must vote them out. Because, never. Never, ever, again.

It shouldn't surprise me that Trump wanted civil rights protesters shot. After all, he did suggest that police shouldn't be so kind as they put suspects in the backseat of their police car or that he could shoot someone in the middle of 5th Ave (NYC) and get away with it. But I am shocked! I knew he was a cruel man who chafes at anything that takes attention away from him or that mocks or ridicules him, but I never would have suspected he'd go as far as to suggest that the military should open fire on protesters.

@@gregorygarcia7807, it's idiots like you that helped get Trump elected. Clinton could have been an ostrich, and you should have voted for her. You may not be part of this group, but progressive Democrats tended to have these kind of litmus/purity tests based ideological purity for her. Apparently there were a statistically significant number of Obama voters who didn't vote for her because she wasn't as "likeable" as Obama. Who cares that she liked a 1960s conservative politician?!? What is more important is what she has done while in government over the last decade or so. Look at all the things Trump did, and ask yourself what would have happened if Clinton was elected. For starters, there would be 3 more liberal or moderate members of the Supreme Court. Women's ability to control their own bodies may disappear throughout much of the country if Roe is overturned, but at least you made sure not to vote for a Goldwater sympathizer! People who "couldn't" vote for Clinton are actually more annoying than Trumpists. They basically are in a cult. What's your excuse?!? Trumpists and left-leaning people who didn't get off their asses to vote for Clinton forced Trump on us, not Hillary.

@@kgunthorpe The American people wanted Bernie Sanders. The corporate democrats and their DNC wanted Hillary. Hillary was hated, because Bill sold us out letting the corporations move overseas for cheap labor. That being said, Hillary would have been infinitely better than Trump. Joe Biden is also a corporate guy, like Obama turned out to be, but even then it was back to the same old situation that America hated to begin with. The people hated all the country's wealth going to the top 1%. The wealthiest country in history, but children are going hungry, living on the street, even as our infrastructure crumbles. All this even as Jeff Bezos purchases a $500,000,000 super yacht with it's own spare yacht to carry around the helicopter. Then there's Jeff's joy ride to the edge of space. Lucky for him that Amazon pays no federal tax. You can thank the DNC for Trump.

There is an ecosphere of negativity, victimhood, or fear, around most of politics. But Trump was good about playing up to those fears. And I think not enough attention is paid to right wing talk media. I heard one my own ears say, "Democrats are trying to destroy America". That is putting listeners at a level of basic fear. Consider that the US is considered the world's richest nation, and the white people are the majority. so then the focus is made on, someday they will not be the majority. Here's an example that is funny to me. I heard Trump say; "Biden would hurt God". That just shows how little Trump understands about the concept of God, in my book.

Speaking of using the active military for domestic anti-protest purposes, I was in the 82 Airborn Divison in 1970 during the "March on Washington" and I went with the 3rd Brigade to Washington. The role of the 82nd was to protect federal government buildings. So, there was an instance where the active military was used in a domestic occasion. The Brigade was kept mostly at Andrews Airforce Base, but some units were deployed to the city, but they were not involved in any action against US citizens.

I sincerely want to thank you for your service. Thank you. What you were referring to, about that situation 1970, the use of military, wasn't contravertial? My thought is context, context, context! Nixon in 1970, was not thought of as unstable and corrupt as Trump in 2020 and Nixon served until 1974. Until Nixon was disgraced Nixon was a popular president. The war was protested. We didn't know how unstable and corrupt Nixon really was until years after 1970. Still there was a clear sense Nixon knew how the US government works and that isn't the case for Trump. In 1970 had anything like what was done on June 1st 2020 to peaceful protestors (I'm not saying all George Floyd protestors were peaceful) when Trump wanted to stand holding someone else's Bible upside-down in front of St John's for a photo op happen? The military leaders sensed a dictatorial tendency in Trump. They were trying to prevent being used against US citizens. They got the clear sense Trump couldn't tell the difference between how to US citizens during a protest and the Afghani people during a war (which is another topic). I think that after Watergate even if Nixon had not resigned if he had wanted to do what you said you did in the military in 1970 there might have been a problem within the military leadership following what Nixon had commanded. What I'm saying is that we know more during a presidency then we used to and when we know how unstable a president is it's hard to deploy that military and that military leadership to follow orders against their own citizens and I think that's a good thing. I have sought to answer my own question if it was controversial in 1970 what you were describing. EXCERPT: The National Guard was called into service during a postal strike in 1970 to “execute the laws of the United States as they relate to the Post Office Department.”301 The cited authority for this action was the Economy Act of 1932,302 which led to some criticism because that statute does not provide for the use of the Army. In 1973, the Army became involved in a federal law enforcement operation to quell a civil disturbance on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota after some 200 members of the American Indian Movement seized and occupied the village of Wounded Knee to demonstrate their grievances. The Attorney General advised President Nixon to send federal troops to the area, presumably under the authority of 10 U.S.C. § 332 (now § 252), but military advisors counseled against the idea.304 Instead, some 350 federal officers were sent to the scene, including a paramilitary group from the U.S. Marshals Service.305 Nevertheless, the 82d Airborne Division was tasked to provide a 1,000-man contingency force as well as some observers, and regional National Guard units provided surveillance aircraft and other equipment. The troops from the 82d Airborne were not deployed, but some questioned whether military aid supplied to civilian law enforcement was permissible under the Posse Comitatus Act,306 leading to litigation and eventually legislation to authorize some types of military support to civil authorities. (See below “Support to Law Enforcement.”) www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=fas.org/sgp/crs/natsec/R42659.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwiZuaKJqpfyAhWkFVkFHcjQDPoQFnoECAMQAg&usg=AOvVaw2LLIpoewh6w9fA7GR_gOvi

I noticed that Bender reported that the after Trump returns to the WH after Walter Read COVID the “pull off the mask” shot that was used in Trump propaganda was actually shot as a second take some time after he arrived home due to his physical exhaustion. @@timothye5936 I would have to say I had a slight preference for Bender’s. Much has been said about his writing about the “Front Row Joe’s”. It’s an important part of the book but does not dominate. I thought Mike got to a deeper level of intimacy with people he report on. Rucker / Leonig, as Washington Post reporters may have been slightly hampered by less access or may not have wanted to include material not triple fact-checked. Bender pulls no punches and the facts in both books line up. Also he focuses a bit more on the Trump campaign…versus the Trump White House. Without Rucker/Leonig I never would have learned that Trump’s favorite politician was Meade Esposito…the Democratic powerful liberal yet corrupt and dominating political boss on New York’s Kings County (Brooklyn) in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. A guy never elected to public office but whose “ring” Donald and Fred Trump probably had to kiss on many occasions. Bender’s book reminded me a bit of J. Anthony Lukas’s phenomenal 1985 Pulitzer Prize wining “Common Ground - A Turbulent Decade in the Lives of Three American Families” in the respectful tone he takes with all participants…letting events, choices and behavior speak for themselves.

Informative interview. I'm prompted to purchase the book for more details. Mr. Bender obviously went through a lot on this, hanging around the trump crowd has to be turbo charged stress to the max. I'm particularly curious on any insights into his supporters that can maybe shed some light as to why they fully support someone who some say is a clone of Stalin or Hitler or both.

It's fascinating to me that these two very talented reporters Who and the only word I can think of is professionally able to separate themselves from the fact that Trump is nothing more than a grifter con man Criminal and that they're able to put that aside to do their work is spellbinding. For example to talk about whether Trump will run again for office and knowing that were talking about a criminal really makes this a very interesting discussion

@Evan Degenfelder - My dad used to hate that phrase. At 56, I was raised on it and most people use it reflexively. I’m glad it doesn’t bother me. For a while everyone on NPR was beginning every single question and answer with “So,…” Seems less prevalent now (or maybe it’s happening I no longer notice), but I _hate_ it! Same goes for “pleaded” over what I grew up hearing (“pled”). Now _that_ drives me crazy! It just sounds wrong to me, and always will. It’s not rational of me, I realize, I just wince involuntarily every time I hear it. I think I understand what you’re feeling, but, the truth is, as I’m sure you know, whether we like it or not, language doesn’t stand still, y’know? ;)

@@polferiferus1938 I completely agree with your assessment on "So. . ." I too have noticed that on many interviews. I realize that language is a fluid art but some things do 'stick in the craw' more than others. I've heard that psychologists can explain what's going on with people's overuse of various words/phrases; that it might indicated nervousness, insecurity, etc. But still, when any one thing is done enough that the listener becomes aware of it, it does seem to take away from what they're trying to communicate.

@@polferiferus1938 Thank you! It's "pled" not "pleaded". More offensive to me is people who constantly interject "right" at the end of their sentence. It's a ploy to manipulate and confirm the person's opinion as fact in the listener's mind.
