something I’ve noticed too, is women bringing down other women. Most boy group stans are girls, and the people that tend to slam female idols are also typically, female. I’ve seen female boy group stans shun cute concepts, or gg’s all together for being “slutty” etc. TRYING to justify it but lets be honest, it’s really just the culture of women being threatened of other women, the need to bring other girls down to feel better about yourself. And it’s something I’ve noticed for years in the kpop community and in life in general. Not all boy group stans obviously, but it’s there and present.

the thing about sexualization, as you said, we see that male sexualization is seen as a normal thing, but we can forget that there are boys that are not legal out there singing about sex (sm made nct dream sing drippin', a song that made one of the members really uncomfortable to sing it). but of course girls are tretated way worse, every concept that a girlgroup do is over sexualized, even gfriend's cuteness is a thing that is made to make a bunch of older military man scream their brains out, girlgroups are never safe in any concept, some people see as """empowering"" but let's think about stellar, and how the girls were desperate to quit the group and the concept that they were forced into but fans just kept ignoring and screaming "yes queens" to everything they did
@jollyrancherchick5 жыл бұрын
Not only are some of the boys not legal, but they also dress them in womens clothing. So many male idol groups have been put in female clothes it's crazy. In example, Vixx has worn everything from school girl uniforms, tights and heels, to slinky black dresses, super form-fitted frilly tops and stuffed bras with wigs. I've seen some of them trying to hold their skirt down when dancing so they don't accidentally show their underwear. They were put in the same terrible situation as some female idols. But let's be honest. If the girls do a sexy concept, people complain because it's "over sexualized". If that same girl group did a cute concept, people complain because they're not being "taken seriously", they're trying to attract older men, or the concept was too "girly and immature". Let me tell you, plenty of female fans love when their fav girl groups do cute and girly concepts. There doesn't seem to be a middle ground for some people. What kind of concept would make everyone happy? I personally enjoy both sexy and cute. I mean, music is music and if the music is good, I'm there.

@Maneater12065 жыл бұрын

@panner115 жыл бұрын
Aside from the underage issue, the problem isn't that the concepts are oversexualized. Kpop is probably less sexualized overall than the majority of pop music industries. All the problems come from the fact that idols don't have any control. There are plenty of idols who are comfortable with sexier concepts than they are doing, and plenty of idols who aren't comfortable. But neither have any pull in deciding what concept they will do. It's part of the larger problem of workers rights in Korea.

Im always annoyed that Boy Groups are allowed more creative freedom in their music. Im glad companies like JYP are letting Twice write most of the tracks on their albums now. And Pledis let pristin write/compose their own stuff. But in almost every other company the girls arent allowed to write/compose their own songs. I completely agree. Also, another example is that of Red Velvet's Irene. A fan asked her at a fanmeet what book she was currently reading or has read so she told her she read a book that fans later found out was supporting feminism. Nothing wrong with a female reading a book that empowers her own gender, right? Hah, not to these fans. "Fans" literally boycotted her and posting tweets of them burning her merchandise (they were mostly male fans lmao) and it was just so disgusting. Then Namjoon from BTS said in a Vlive that he read the exact same fucking book but did fans boycott him. Lmao nah, they praised him for caring about social issues. I'm not degrading what Namjoon has done and I'm glad he's a woke king however this is a clear example of how fucking double standardized the kpop fandom can be.

For your record, the fans who boycotting Irene are mostly her male fans, while RM in the other hand has many female fans, and even if there any male, they usually woke just like RM. Another problem is people in Korea think feminism just like Nazi, and who can blame them ? Its all because there's this really popular "feminism" webpage in Korea that in that webpage, they curse and disregarding men for doing everything (for example there's this article in this webpage that talk about a man who accidentally burn his dick and thousands of comment basically mock that man), this "feminism" webpage make a lot of people in korea (men especially) think wrongly about feminism, when feminism is actually only about equality and equity.

Also, in some boygroup songs they're literally singing about sexual things and their companies allow it, yet for girlgroups they sing about love and it's banned??? Totally agree with all this. To add, the problem with the concept of "the basement" is that artists who are locked in it are often seen as lazy. Yet take Blackpink for example. They're always on camera, filming for BP House or Diaries, doing CFs, travelling, showing up on variety shows, etc. They're working all the time, but they're not working on their actual jobs as musicians - so they're looked on as lazy and called 'models'. It's like no. They're also overworked, doing unnecessary side projects to generate as much money as their company can squeeze out of them in every single way except the one that actually counts. It's not their fault, and we all know this, but still people will say BP don't deserve wins because they don't work as hard as other groups. Um hello their entire lives are work.

The KPOP community and honestly the Korean society needs a lot of reform. My friend who's Korean and I always talk about the problems within Korean society. Especially after the T.O.P marijuana situation and Jonghyun, we had very long talks about how we found what happened so devastating and how people in Korea reacted to these situations vs how people like us who grew up in the West reacted. I might be biased because marijuana is legal in my country and the school that I go to has been very supportive and open about mental health and making a safe place for students who are struggling. My whole life I've seen people around me struggle, I've struggled, and it's such a hard thing to go through especially if the society you are in isn't supportive and there's a huge stigma around it. In America, Demi Lavato overdosed on heroin or something like that, and she got so much love from fans and other celebrities talking about how hard addiction is and wishing her all the best and a fast recovery. But T.O.P smoked marijuana and could've gotten 10 years in prison and tried to commit suicide because of all the hate he got. It honestly shocked me when the whole situation went down. When the news first broke out the friend that I was talking about before, and I cried because we were obviously so upset. For us, at that specific time, there didn't seem to be any red flags, so it just popped out of the blue. What broke my heart, even more, is that Taeyeon had to promise her fans she wouldn't commit suicide herself. Whenever Taeyeon spoke about her depression, she got so much hate, and I'm so sure many idols including Jonghyun saw this and thought that will happen to me if I spoke out or talked about it at all. There's so much stigma about mental health even though mental health is as important as psychical health. Every day I'm so scared that another idol will end up having the same fate as Jonghyun and I don't wish or want that for anyone. I remember the day when IU did the speech about Jonghyun and Yeri started crying and then her fellow group mates and people from other groups hid her and protected her while holding back their own tears and it just reminded me of how big an impact he really made on the whole world and especially the people closest to him. I know I'll probably get some hate for criticizing Korean society like people saying, "It's no your society they just have a different culture over there." and to combat that I'd say it's not just Korean society it's any other culture that stigmatizes mental health or mistreats women/LGBT people that this is aim towards it just happened that I commented this on a video about KPOP. Also sorry if there's anything I got factually wrong this is all from my memory so feel free to correct me.

My issues with how Kpop treats female idols: -When there’s a dating “scandal”, the female idol gets berated the most and it’s disgusting. Male idols get attacked too for being a “traitor” but crazy straight girls tend to view their oppa as a victim and the female idol as some snake. -I hate watching a girl group stage and the camera does these weird crotch/butt shots. Especially when it’s not even a sexy concept, it’s just creepy. -skirts are so short to the point people I expect to see safety shorts instead of them appearing just when a skirt flies up too high. I notice it often when I watch Red Velvet, Irene and Joy get such small uncomfortable skirts. It looks like a nightmare. -beauty standards for women is all around bullshit but it’s prominent in Kpop. When a male idol has some chub, fans fawn one how cute it is. When girls have chub, they get shunned or made fun of. When girls are too skinny as well, people just attack them... girl groups have a flimsier fan-base since most Kpop fans generally are straight girls and straight males rather support attractive girls than a group. -like you said, when there’s a girl group that does a sexy concept, it’s not like they unanimously voted to do it, it’s a concept they were made to do. Same with cutesy concepts though. It’s fine if the girls want to do it but that’s not always the case.

@monemori5 жыл бұрын
@@algonzalez6853 Don't twist my words. I'm not mad at people for explaining what they like and no where in my comment do I say so. You are allowed to explain whatever you want about yourself to anyone you'd like. My points are: 1) Sometimes gg stans come off as accustory when they ask bg stans why they don't like ggs, and they feel like they have to explain themselves or else they'll be accused of being sexist (sometimes that happens because people suck!), or viceversa. The reality is that no one should be pressured into liking anything and what you like it's no one business but your own, and no one can judge you for your likes in music or genders or whatever. 2) Sometimes when some bg stans feel the need to justify not liking ggs because they are afraid of being called sexist by dumb people, they will use "excuses" that actually make no sense, like saying that ggs NEVER have complex choreographies or that they ALWAYS do cute concepts or whatever. Which just goes to show that that person doesn't actually know anything about ggs because that simply isn't true, and frankly, it is annoying. I'm not saying all bg stans do this, ofc, but it's annoying when it happens. (Idc about your preferences, you do you. I personally don't really like the term ''girl crush concept'' at all because it can mean 10,000 different things depending on the group, so idk).
@monemori5 жыл бұрын
@@caitlinyang3752 To be honest, you know what? There is some truth to what you're saying. Women (in general lbr, not just in korea) are expected to be just pretty and desirable and a lot of the times they are not allowed to just "be people", as in, women having opinions and their own ideas makes them seem undesirable! That much is true! But also, there are plenty of women in the industry writing about their experiences, about serious matters, even about sexism in the industry. More and more women are having a say in the music they produce, and they can convey powerful messages. The problem is that sometimes those get overlooked precisely because of sexism, as you said, but they are there if you look for them. I personally love supporting female artists who are outspoken, and there's quitea few in kpop!

It shouldn't matter if you're a boy group stan or a girl group stan... if you know a little about kpop outside of blackpink, exo or bts you would know that the industry is so problematic to. the. core. If we talk gender equality it's exactly as you say. Boy groups get excused for a lot. Girl groups get dragged for one mistake or wrongdoing. Boy groups are hyped for grabbing their crothces. Girls get cancelled and called whores for wearing shorts and showing a bit too much midriff at the same time. I don't know where the double standard comes from? I guess it comes from a lot of places. The companies are obviously influenced by the Korean society. So, somewhere in the social culture of South Korea there has to be something which makes girls have to behave a different way compared to boys. It wouldn't surprise me since there's a lot of countries, religions and cultures which are so extremely misogynistic it can't go unnoticed. Not saying that's the case with South Korea though! I don't think any culture is perfect. Second of all I think it's the fanbases internationally. The domestic fanbase in South Korea and their opinions on this can be simplified and drawn to what I previously stated about their culture. The international fans actions/opinions are other matters. Firstly it depends on where the person's from. Secondly I think it depends on the gender and age of the person. I see these 12-14 year old girls calling out female idols far more than women in their 20's. I don't know why that is. Education? Maturing? Getting your hormones under control? Getting a moral code? I mean, the industry and criticism is heavily shaped and based off of what the fans do. That's why it's incredibly important to atleast think before you open your mouth. I could do a whole school project about this. This is very close to my heart as a female social science student in Sweden (the country of feminism in itself pretty much) and I literally boil inside when I see the double standard in kpop and how ugly things can get without people realising how awful they are behaving and how misogynistic they are without realising... and being OFFENDED when called out for it, yeah right susan go on and call her a whore while hyping boys' crotches. Not misogynistic at all.

It's radical feminism that thinks women should have it it better than men. That's toxic. Wanting equality, however, is NOT toxic. Do you think that's toxic? Wanting equal rights and possibilities in society for both men and women? For an example: giving women more freedom in a lot of North African/West Asian countries or giving women in the West (including Japan and South Korea) the equal chance of getting a job or a high position within the job market. Changing the societies standard for how men should act, working against toxic masculinity etc. are things which should be improved for men and having a more open discussion about men's mental health since they over represent in suicide. But as a Korean I've seen how bad things can get against female idols. And yeah, like... the TV industry as a whole needs to take a chill pill honestly. I only began taking an interest in Kpop after I turned 18, so I never had to go through the young teenager fangirl stage. BUT I've seen it in other fandoms, namely Percy Jackson, and Harry Potter, where a lot of fans would bash female characters for really no good reason, especially when it came to self-insert fantasies. Personally I couldn't relate bc like... I'm a really fuckin' biromantic asexual... but anyways, that's fairly similar to what happens in Kpop fandoms. And maybe that is, like you said, because sexualization of male groups is normalized (which I kind of agree with), but I feel like girl groups almost always have something sexual in their choreographies, even if the concept is supposed to be cute. For example, Twice’s like ooh-ah. Female groups’ choreographies so many times include either sticking their butts out or touching themselves or something like that. Girl groups music videos have most dislikes Girl groups are not first in many major categories like highest no of daesang is got by boy groups Girl groups don't have the highest no of album sales it is also by a boy group Most music show wins is not by a girl group but a boy group The most searched in KZbin Google spotify( streaming, followers) and other music platforms is by a boy group. From 2012 to 2020 the best selling albums are by boygroups, not a single girl group What's even more sad that women give hatred to women, I am ashamed most haters who dislike and hate ggs are women because they like their oppas

i really agree with the part about pledis and sm, like with nu’est and exo, they were also stuck in the basement for a while (nu’est more so than exo, but still) but they eventually received the promotion they deserved, even though groups like pristin, orange caramel (sadly, i doubt after school would gain any attention at this point) and f(x) could do much better than them if they had the chance. ugh.

Nuest just sold 200K Plus in one week. Pristin ain't ever getting close to that number.They sold less than 12 K 1st week sales for both their Albums.. 👎 Actually sad.

I also hate how some people hate mmm for the black face incedent but go around and say "hwasa smells" like it's funny even though it's a colorist joke made by knetz.

@@Bluevids-y4g I mean.. that IS blackface. With that being said, they never did it again and apologized sveral times in different languages, both on the web and in person to fans.

Stellar is a perfect example of companies over sexualizing idols against their will. During vibrato the members literally had to beg their company to not make them wear G-strings under their dresses. They where so I'm comfortable with their concept they begged their fans not to donate to their makestar so they couldn't have a Comeback.

I remember RM and another member say in an interview that they know it is very hard for female idols and they feel that it's very unfair. I don't understand why there is so much difference in male or female idols like what in the actual hell. The company is the first to blame to be honest. I do agree that there are some fans who are overly protective about their Idols and think that they are always right. I really hope girl groups get the respect they deserve in Kpop.

12:27 ,,, this makes me so mad. i’m a very big mamamoo stan and people are like “omg how can you stan them they’ve done blackface twice after apologizing and they wore bindis they’re so awful” but it’s all not true and now people believe these completely made up facts. it just makes me mad that people feel the need to hate on them so much

1 23 stop it. They are racist. You can love them but you can’t force other ppl to. They are well aware of their problematic behavior and they even mocked Black ppl in their music videos. There is no excuse and they aren’t even that talented. Hwasa mimics Black Women.
