If you don't consume hot drinks, and you're opposed to using mugs for cold drinks, there are still tons of things you can do with the mugs you're attached to and don't want to give away! Mugs are imo underrated for snacking purposes, or maybe you can use them somehow in cooking. And the storage options! I know you mentioned bookmarks, but maybe you can store pens or paint/makeup brushes in them, or put plants or grow herbs in them. Put (sun)glasses in them. Collect loose change. If you're the type to pick flowers, maybe some of them would be suitable for vases. I've seen people turn theirs into bird feeders. So many options!

For Dune, the newer copies have chapter breaks. Specifically, the epitaphs from Princess Irulan start on new pages like a chapter and that’s how the audiobook is broken up as well. Just didn’t want anyone to be intimidated by that! It looks like the epitaphs in your copy would definitely be harder to track. Maybe it was a money-saving decision for the mass market size.

Congratulations on a good mug declutterring! It is hard to get rid of stuff we are attached to, or found useful for a long time. I myself have a collection (? It is small enough) of cups (we are tea and coffee drinkers), but 90% of them are handmade by me, my pottery friends, or from craft markets. And throwing these… almost impossible. Only if chipped, or if I make smth better than what I have already.

If you enjoyed that book about magical realism, you might also like The Dark Fantastic by Dr. Ebony Elizabeth Thomas. Similarly, if you like a blend of nonfiction & memoir, you might be interested in the genres of testimonio or semi-autobiographical novels. Testimonio tends to be most strongly associated with Latin America; its most famous example is I, Rigoberta Menchú. Semi-autobiographical novels tends to lean very literary, but they also at times incorporate elements I would consider sort of surreal. My favorite examples of the genre are When the Grey Beetles Took Over Baghdad by Mona Yahia & The Pillar of Salt by Albert Memmi.

HIGHLY recommend "The Ornithologist's Field Guide to Love" by India Holton. It's a silly romance that reminds me of Veronica Speedwell in tone (historical-esque albeit with minor fantastical elements). Aaaaand for the best part: It's a standalone (kinda)! I think a "sequel" is in the works, but with different characters (think like Middlegame, where you don't HAVE to read them all or in order).

I very much struggled with Dune and DNF'd it so many times. But it was exactly because of what you described--there is a lack of world building that I was desperately needing and not getting. I think you're right that people often DNF Dune because they say the world building is too big, but I personally find that getting thrown into the heavy dialogue and plot right from the start of Dune is what made it difficult for me. I craved an in depth explanation of the world and I'm sure if I could have stuck it out I'd get that from it but I just felt so incredibly lost in it.
