The audio in this one is a bit buggered. Something happened in the middle of the recording and messed it up badly (something similar happened last month for those who have been with the channel a while). Since then I've been checking the videos before uploading but since it has always corrupted the entire audio track I figured this one was good when the first sentence wasn't garbled. For the time being I'm going to leave the video up but I'm really tempted to re-react to this one once I get it figured out.

Thank you for this!!! I love Gorguts so much, every one of their albums is a different feeling/emotive experience, and I definitely feel like Colored Sands was a fantastic culmination of many different emotions and feelings. Such a complex and beautiful album, and Forgotten Arrows is one of the best tracks!

I missed this reaction. I saw this band play this album twice, and I have to say, each time was so amazing. The dynamics of each riff are so broad and hearing it live, super clearly and super loud, were amazing experiences. Some of my favorite shows.

Gorguts are the original dissonant death metal band. Super technical too. You'll hear a lot of people talk about Portal, Mitochondrion, or Ulcerate with regards to this style of dissonant metal - but my personal favourite are Abyssal. They're a bit more 'blackened' but they create some mad atmospheres. I'd be curious to hear your opinion on Veil of Transcendence by Abyssal, mostly because the latter half of the song is something people either seem to love or loathe, due to just how wrong it sounds. I personally love how it resolves and think it's worth it, though. Other options would be I am the Alpha and Omega, Chrysalis, Dialogue, or The Tongue of the Demagogue. The latter two are the only one not from the same album as the others - only reason that album has more recommendations is because its the only one they've made so far without programmed drums, so whilst you could still comment on the composition you wouldn't be able to comment as much on the performance in that regard.

Hi, consistently love your videos (allthough you need to get your mic fixed!) Colored Sands is a concept album in two parts based based on Tibet. The first half is about the culture, the immense natural beauty, the majesty of the country. Then there's an orchestral split before going into the second half, which is about the invasion of Tibet by China in 1950. This second half deals with gruesome events about how the nation was crushed. The final song is about questioning Tibet's cultural belief in pacifism in these circumstances and whether this culture will survive or even be remembered. I think you are very spot on with thinking that there's themes of futility, senseless hate, and maybe despair in this song. Maybe that knowledge is helpful, I think both this album and their 2016 EP Pleiades' Dust are really excellent and deserve a look from anyone who enjoys experimental heavy metal, so hopefully this inspires you!

@@richardgamrat1944 I just think a review for a new listener there's so much more richness in the newer releases which on the other hand Destroyers would be too one sided and EiF a little rough to process on a first listen, but imo Shrines is my favourite and EiF is an indisputable classic

Oh, I'm very glad you came back to Gorguts. Colored Sands and Obscura are my two favorite albums of theirs, and Colored Sands is the one I actually listen to on the most regular basis. There's definitely this atmosphere of fatigue, exhaustion, just totally being unable to carry on that carries through the album, really driven home by the final moments of "Forgotten Arrows". Everything getting simpler and heavier and slower until there's just nothing left.

If you are up for this kind of music I suggest you take a look at Ulcerate - Stare into death and be still. Related to Gorguts, but it's own beast, much more focused on atmosphere and riffs rather than the time changes and rawness of the Gorguts sound. They basically released the album of the year - I strongly recommend it to everyone who felt at least a bit intrigued from this one.

I would love to hear your opinion on Lye By Mistake, and their incredible song "Big Red Button". They were originally a four piece, but slimmed down to an instrumental three piece for their final album, Fea Jur. It's an absolute MONSTER of an album, containing pretty much every genre of music one could think of. Seriously, you'd be hard pressed to name any style that ISN'T played on this album! And this song kicks the whole thing off :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYjFqpuabN2SY6c

I you also like Old School Death Metal the first albums are great, and I'd suggest Stiff and Cold, Disincarnated, and Dormant Misery. Your audio is bad on this. I love Gorguts and I've always thought of them as like the funhouse mirror version of metal; it's metal, but with such weird, distorted, angular proportions that change and morph in unpredictable ways, and it takes time to wrap your head around it. Obscura is still an utterly original, genre-defying masterpiece that sounds like nothing else out there before or since. Now that you've done them, you should really check out Immolation (I'd recommend Father You're Not a Father) and Ulcerate, who is, IMO, the best DM band out there right now who was heavily influenced by Gorguts and Immolation. I'd recommend Stare Into Death and Be Still, Everything is Fire, or Withered and Obsolete. It's incredibly dense stuff.
