I might sound very biased here, but I think no other developer managed to tap into the bad vibes of the mid-2000's better than Monolith. There is something about the desolate urban ambiance of FEAR and Condemned that I find haunting to this very day. Also the ragdolls are also top notch.

I have one vivid memory of Condemned. Going up against a hobo that had a gun, I stunned him in melee, took his gun, and shot him in the face so he fell down a ladder. All in a very quick and dynamic manner. Even if the rest of the game sucked the game could click and click hard. A bit like Bungie's Oni in that regard.

This is it, this is the game that broke my sheltered mindset as a teenager when it came to horror games. A friend literally sat me down and made me play it in the dark, and teen me was terrified. However, by the time I finished Bart's Department Store I was hooked. That young kid who was scared of everything wasn't so scared anymore, in fact I started to like it. What timing, I JUST started replaying this after all these years. Put on the 'Neural Origins' """HD""" texture pack (just upscaled and sharpened but it really works for this game). Having such a blast, it's every bit as good as I remembered it, if not a little clunky on the movement, although that's expected for a game of this era with a full body simulation. Fantastic scares, super moody atmosphere, remarkably good visuals, and an excellent gameplay loop. Currently up to the department store again lol, so good

Honestly, John Carmack quote about "Storyline in videogames" is a bit outdated, but at the same time, he did have a point during the time he said that in the 80's and 90's where Videogame was mostly seen as a "Time killer" and wasn't taken serious as a form of media that tells a "story". John most likely treated videogames as an old school Arcade like Pacman or Donkey Kong. Then again, John Carmack always been more of an engineer in creating graphics and game engine at the lowest PC specs than being interested in videogames, John Romero and Tom Hall was the real videogame nerds.

This honestly has always been my favorite horror game and no game has ever since scared me quite in the way this game did, and each of my friends who've ive gotten to play it have gotten the hell scared out of them. I dont often play too many horror games as they in my experience end up just not being fun games usually at least the ones ive ended up playing but id love to play another game as frightening and fun as this one. Also the fights and jump scares in this game are so visceral I just love it.

Man I loved this game soooo much when it came out. In retrospect it had some flaws but the atmosphere of it just made you look past all of it. RIP Monolith :(

Your voice is not echo-y and so much clearer than in previous episodes. 👍 Still not as good as 5 years ago, (compare this episode with Duke Nukem Forever for example) which was much warmer and 'closer', but a lot better than the last few videos. Never played Condemned, but for me, when I was young, the game Eternal Darkness for the GameCube used to scare the living shit out of me. They also had these deliberately placed psychouts embedded into the game, which was one of its kind and freaking awesome.

I also played this two decades ago and this showcase made me realize just how much the atmosphere carried it and led to the fondness of my memory. It was a wonderfully gritty experience for the time, but good gosh the story is far worse than I remember and it's interesting how willing I was then to accept such simple gameplay that barely changes past the first level. These days, the obnoxiously slow movement speed typical of mid-00s games alone would turn me off in minutes, let alone playing through hour after hour with the same basic melee system and no change in moment-to-moment decision making. That didn't bother me back then, but given I'd happily replay FEAR any day while having zero desire to touch this one after watching Civvie's recap, I find it intriguing to compare how the two games have aged in different ways over the years.

the battery modification makes perfect sense, lining batteries in series increases the voltage output linearly. this can best be demonstrated by clicking 9 amp bricks together in a big beautiful chain and turning your favorite wire into an LED strip for half a second when you close the loop
