The one I was surprised wasn’t mentioned was Snake's grenade jank. When snake pulled a second grenade and shield dropped it, it would halt all movement of the first grenade, even when in someone else's hand. You could strip the grenade out of the opponent's hand, which would sometimes make it risky to approach with a grenade because he could make you drop it, and if you input a toss you may throw out an aerial and blow up the grenade. Smashville plat canceling was also crazy

Plus the Squirtle shellshifting, which is essentially a super wave dash, specifically good for up smash, in addition to the Donkey Kong and Sonic slant invincibility Coney mentioned. Not a tech, but maybe my favorite glitch in Brawl was the Puff Bridge of Eldin glitch, where if you used Puff's FS after the bridge crumbles and while it's rebuilding, you retain Puff's FS size but with normal moves Absolutely no practical application, but extremely funny As a bonus, if you ate Puff with Yoshi in this state, the egg would multiply Puff's size even farther

I used to kinda resent Melee heads for hating on the games Brawl and after, but watching a few Melee heads (Moky in particular) who explained what they look for in platform fighters I realized that the difference is truly just in philosophy. Melee players want a deep game that lets you see your growth clearly and feel good implementing what you learn. I still resent the notion that the other smash games are “objectively worse” because they break down that wall and make it more accessible for those who aren’t willing to commit their lives to a game that deep, but whatever.

Personally part of the frustration that I have with certain kinds of games is often that the "perfect game" for me in a genre doesn't exist, and if future titles or patches for the game only bring it further away that can be infuriating. Especially if they actually get closer, but neuter my favorite character (see: smash ultimate and marth) or make design decisions that make it less fun to play because of what makes the meta characters strong (see: again, ultimate). I wonder how many melee heads can relate to that as part of their reasoning there. (I'm not one of them, to be clear.)

⁠​⁠@@tenacity25I actually really relate to that, and im mostly and Ultimate player. I think Ulrimate fixes so much of 4’s problems but also removes a lot of stuff I appreciated like footstool tech. I also freaking hate the short hop macro. Character wise, I adored Roy in Melee (you can tell I wasn’t particularly competitive lol) but Brawl removed him and when he was added back in Smash 4 I was so sad. He just didn’t feel the same. I think Melee players likely feel that way about the games that do try and emulate Melee’s depth, but don’t present characters they appreciate as much. Ps: PM Roy is amazing btw, like top 5 platform fighter characters ever for me. He’s Melee Roy but good.

As someone who plays melee, its not really just about the depth, but the feel of the game. I literally feel like my character, rather than puppeting a character because of how precise you can be. And because of the way the engine naturally is, decisions feel more organic rather than trying to play a characters tight gameplan that feels pre-constructed. Like 2 mains of the same character can look so different because of those little things. In other games it feels more like "aw, I can't do that," rather than "wait I can do that??" Not saying other games don't have it, but usually it's through stuff that feels pre-constructed where it's not satisfying to discover, or a character has some sort of complex mechanic stacked on top that makes it feel less loose. Its 100% just preference, and there are characters and things that I love about other games, but usually it never meshes as a whole. Personally I love every smash game, and the genre of platfighters but melee is just my preferred choice.

@@Gamesforus1 Moky actually mentioned that, too, just with less emphasis. He described Ultimate as “getting into the car right away and not really being able to steer.” Because there are fewer ways to be expressive and precise. I think that’s quite true, I mean, you can tell Moky from Cody from Aklo pretty much instantly if you’re decently versed in their play-styles, which I think is still true for, say Leo vs Omega with Joker, but certainly not to the same degree. That’s why I still love the heck out melee as a spectator.

Brawl is exactly that, a deep game with a steep learning curve where you feel good applying what you've learned or discovered. As in melee, high-level Brawl competition is visibly different from mid-level; you can often see great players executing tech consistently that good players can't. It's for this and many other reasons that upsets were always rare in Brawl. And as in any smash game, some characters are higher APM and more technical than others. There's a good selection in Brawl for different kinds of players.

I like to set up chain jacket near the ledge and use it either to edgeguard or cover every getup option... I find its usefulness super MU dependent, but the fsmash one is pretty strong, and it doesn't get stale until you cancel it!

11:40 Back in the day I didn't know how to spot dodge specifically against Tabuu's triple circle wave attack that you have to spot dodge and I was trying to do Boss Battle mode so what I did was pick Pokemon Trainer or Zelda and swap when that attack came out and my Wii was so slow that Zelda and Pokemon Trainer would take the entire attack's duration and some change to actually swap while being invulnerable and that's how I beat Boss Battle mode for like 5 years until I went back after Brawl was old news with the knowledge to actually spot dodge and dogwalked Tabuu because I could pick actually good characters now that I knew how to play and didn't only play for this 1 gamemode.
