The term saponification is the name given to the chemical reaction that occurs when a vegetable oil or animal fat is mixed with a strong alkali. The products of the reaction are two: soap and glycerin. Water is also present, but it does not enter into the chemical reaction. The water is only a vehicle for the alkali, which is otherwise a dry powder. The name saponification literally means "soap making". The root word, "sapo", is Latin for soap. The Italian word for soap is sapone. Soap making as an art has its origins in ancient Babylon around 2500 - 2800 BC. The oils used in modern handmade soap are carefully chosen by the soap maker for the character they impart to the final soap. Coconut oil creates lots of glycerin, makes big bubbly lather, and is very stable. Olive oil has natural antioxidants and its soap makes a creamier lather. Tallow, or rendered beef fat, makes a white, stately bar that is firm and creates abundant lather. Many other oils can be used, each one for a specific reason. Your soap maker will be glad to tell you which oils are used to make her or his soap. The alkali used in modern soap is either potassium hydroxide, which is used to make soft soap or liquid soap because of its greater solubility, or sodium hydroxide, which is used to make bar soap. The common term for the alkali became simply "lye", which curiously is not short for alkali, but originated in the Anglo-Saxon language. Soap made in cottages and on farms in earlier American times became known as "lye soap". That term is now pejorative and derogatory and denotes a harsh soap that would irritate your skin. The old soap got a bad name because it had an excessive amount of caustic. Weighing and measuring techniques were crude, and knowledge of soap chemistry was elementary or non-existent. The true fact is that modern handcrafted soap, though necessarily made with lye to get true soap, has no lye in the final product. It has all been reacted with the oils to form soap and glycerin. A curious fact about modern soap is that most common soap found in the grocery store made in mass-produced factories does have a small amount of excess alkali in it. Also, it has had all of its naturally-occurring glycerin removed so it can be sold as a separate commodity. Why? Greater profit. An important difference between most commercial soap and our Real Handmade soap is that the glycerin is left in Real Handmade Soap and thus it retains its natural moisturizing property.

Myra Trask I like your information on this, I agree. I want to make my own soap but wouldn't want to use lye. This is an old video, but I still had to comment. I love the fact that you're educated on this subject. I was looking for videos on how to make soap natural products or organic. I seen a couple of videos they were nice. This one talking about adding lye. It's not organic if your using lye. I'm trying to get away from using that type of chemical based soap. So thanks again for your information. You can make soap without the lye. I have seen it done.

You cannot make soap with out using some form of lye. If you've seen it done, you are either seeing someone using a preprepared base called melt & pour or a method called rebatching. In both cases, the soap has already been made with the lye before being made into the final product.

Those asking about Lye being organic. In 40 yrs of making soap I have yet to find "Organic Lye" even that it is made with wood. Lye is a process so it can not be label as "organic". Soap can be labeled "Organic" long as 75% of the ingredients are organic.

The only way to remove a dirt is with an oil or a fat. Active Lye and an Oil causes a chemical process known as saponification. The lye is then neutralized over time making it harmless.

First of all when making soap, all the fats or butters are saponified, if doing this correct you'll "super fat" your soap, meaning there is more oil/butter then there is lye to saponify. This resulting in the fact that there is no lye left..... secundary lye is used in cooking. These processes include; washing or chemical peeling of fruits and vegetables, chocolate and cocoa processing, caramel coloring production, poultry scalding, soft drink processing, and thickening ice cream. There is this "big thing" against lye/NaOH but when properly used it makes qualitatively better products than most found in stores. And I'm just speaking from a chemist few.

Adam B I understand what you mean, however your few is a bit "short sighted". (I'm sorry) but your body is very complicated system with a large variety of processes. To give an example, you can drink lemon juice nut it does you harm to put it in your eyes. Body lotions are less delicate than facial creams, your skin is different. your lips need different care then your face. Women cannot wash there intimates with just any type of soap, it need to have a different pH. These are just some small examples. Your body "absorbs" helpful materials through different ways, each way providing the right absorption for the "wanted" nutrients etc. This is just to point out some things can do harm to you when used wrong but can benefit to your health when used the correct way, like lemon juice that i gave as example. You should never use bleach type products on your skin, since the pH value is off the cart compared to your skin. How ever when used correct on your teeth you can whiten them. (just to point out products need to be used for what they are designed). So to advice keep the right path to choice organic products, that are made with care, that will still have the right properties. if you have well made organic soap you could eat it, but if you eat a lot you will become sick, cause your the soap arrives at points at which your body doesn't have a process to process it. I think i made my point, just to conclude, if you take water the Indication of Death (ID 50%) is 7 liters. meaning when you drink 7 l at once you have a 50% to die. for soap this will be way lower, use products wise and the way they are mend to and you"ll be perfectly OK.

I don't get the lemon thing cause I'm wouldn't be putting things in my eye in the first place. And I know too much of anything is bad for you. But that's not the point, and I'm not going to be eating the soap on purpose, I just want it to be perfectly good for me. Like water, or apples, or government. Just kidding about the government. I know that too much water is bad for you, but too much of anything is bad for you. Like if I wash my clothes in bleach, that bleach should not be harmful to me. Otherwise you would be literally washing the things you wear in poisonous chemicals. I shouldn't have to do that. Isn't there a way? When God made everything, did he condemn us to only clean our stuff with bad chemicals? I believe not. I know there is a way, I know there is something, I hope someone else has already found it.

Hey everybody all the organic products have a percentage of non organic materials it is allowed by law and regulations. What do you actually think all those organic fruits veggies are 100% organic nope unless you have all farmers doing organic in the same area pesticides and herbicides will come into contact to some degree. Lye has always been used to make soap it is how soap solidifies.

+Owen Einarson lye doesn't just solidify it. There is a chemical reaction between a fat and a solution of lye (it's called saponification) and the resulting compound is soap. If the calculations are correct 100% of lye has reacted with the fat so none is left in the final product. You want to have extra fat remaining in the soap to make sure it is not drying. I like to superfat it at 5%.

Yes, you can make soap without Palm Oil. However there are companies that sell Palm Oil, that does not contribute to Deforestation, or the destruction of Animal Habitats. Look for labels that say "RSPO Palm Oil" (Roundtable for Sustainable Palm Oil) which insures that their Palm Oil harvested, did not contribute to Animal Cruelty or Deforestation methods.

OK, thank you. I was just concerned it would still burn after waiting patiently 4-6 weeks. So I thought I had done something wrong. The three batches I made, (that burnt my skin), I decided to cook them. This finished soap doesn't burn after it turns solid. However, it is not a smooth attractive finish and difficult to be creative with colour because of it thickness after cooking.

If it burns then your soap is probably lye heavy. You should do a pH test to know for sure...it would normally be fully saponified within a week and would need curing time to harden

Even though lye is made from wood ashes, it's actually not considered to be organic. Though you have to have lye to produce soap, so there is no such thing as 100% organic soap. Honestly, I wouldn't buy soap from someone who couldn't even pronounce her ingredients properly or even remember them. @53sig You need to wait longer than 48 hours before using the soap. After you take the soap out from the mold, it needs to go through the curing process which is when the lye neutralizes into the soap. It takes about a month. Which this lady also failed to mentioned. So yeah, that's why your soaps are burning your hands.

Our great grantmothers used "organic NaOH" from wood ashes. this is what gave NaOH the bad name cause the concentration couldn't be properly determined. You want pure raw materials, that are "clean". That way you don't end up with a harsh soap that burns you. You make a point about knowing your ingredients, but she might also just be very nervous :) Ps. if you make soap for commercial use let it cure for about 6-8 weeks just to be sure.

Actually, lye and oils will be saponified within usually 24 to 48 hours.. but for curing soap..it's just letting any moisture dry out so soap will be harder and last longer. Soo it can be used after only 24 to 48 hrs.

Important also to mention when mixing the Lye and Water, NEVER add water to the lye. You slowly add the lye to the water otherwise it will create a volcanic reaction. If you accidentally splash lye on your skin, you can use vinegar directly on your skin to protect your skin from burning.

The host didn't let her finish. After you slice the soap, you need to let it sit (cure) for about 6 weeks. This allows the lye to mellow out. If you were to use the soap right out of the mold, you'd probably still get burned by the lye.

The "cure" refers to the evaporation of the water, not the lye. In Cold Process Method, the lye is gone after about 48 hours. But the water takes time to evaporate out.

joy...using vinegar on your skin after a lye burn is not accurate! alot of people say that...but its not! the vinegar actually makes the lye burns worse....I KNOW FROM EXPERIENCE! The best thing to do if you get lye on your skin is rinse WELL with water...then wash down anything that the lye splattered on with vinegar ;) the countertops, the floors, etc :)

I disagree. Lye is extremely alkaline. The alkalinity is what makes it burn your skin. Vinegar is an acid which counteracts the alkalinity in the lye and brings it to a better pH. Water causes lye to heat up. Adding water will make the burn worse. I've made lots of homemade soap over the years and have gotten some lye burns. The vinegar definitely helps. If you get lye on your skin it is going to burn you no matter what, but the burns won't be as severe if you can quickly balance the pH.

Jennifer Sheremetta I disagree. I splattered soap batter with active lye on my arm last week, I sprayed it with vinegar. Vinegar stings a little, but it stops the chemical reaction from the lye and your skin so you the burn stops.

+Sand Angels +Elisabeth Blackwood While Lye is a Base, and Vinegar is an Acid and is supposed to neutralize the other, you have to take into account where they sit on the pH scale in terms of Base vs Acid. Vinegar is a weaker Acid, compared to how high up on the scale Lye is as a Base, and would require a lot more Vinegar to properly neutralize it. This has been proven by many soapers over the years, who have replaced 100% of their water, with Vinegar, and still got a good bar of soap. The Vinegar only neutralized "some" of the lye, resulting in an slightly increased Superfat.

Every molecule is synthetic, however some can be found in nature, like lye. "Farm soap" used to be made from animal fats and Lye. Lye is the solution of NaOH in H2O, sodium hydroxide was potash leached from wood ashes and various carbonates produced from the ashes of seaweeds and land plants. Synthetic is only right if it is synthesized in a lab and not found in nature.

I have tried making this soap three times and mixed it until it traced. After 48 hours, even though it has a solid butter consistance, I washed my hands with it. However, each time it burned my skin. Is this normal until after several months when it will hardens? I followed the measurements exactly given by several Utube experts.

@53sig: A freshly made soap needs to be cured for at least 4 to 6 weeks before it can be used. That is the amount of time that is required for the saponification process to complete. Before that traces of lye are present causing the burn.

rduarte818 when the lye and oil fats mix they cancel each other out. no more lye no more fat just soap the chemical reaction between the 2 does this. you cannot make true soap without lye and there isn't lye in soap itself as it depletes as it merges with the fats and as it cures. that is the reason you have to be careful with measure order of process and timing. it's dangerous until it's all together and cured.

+rduarte818 As Brandy mentioned above, ALL soap is made with lye. Whether it is homemade soap, or a name brand soap you buy from the store, it was made with lye. To understand soap, you have to look at it through Chemistry. You mix 2 ingredients together, and it reacts with each other, and it can change the molecular structure of what you started with. The same is with lye. Soap is made of different Oils/Fats/Butters mixed with a Lye Solution. Without the lye, you can mix everything together as much as you want, and all you will end up with is a pile of oils/fats/butters mixed together, but it won't be "Soap". When the lye is added, it begins the chemical reaction called "Saponification" where the lye breaks down, to change the molecular structure of the oils/fats/butters used. Once the saponification process has finished (48 hrs for Cold Process, or after it's finished cooking for Hot Process), there will be NO lye left remaining in the "Final Product" (provided that everything was measured correctly). However, although the lye is gone after about 48 hours (for Cold Process) soap still needs to "Cure" in order to let the water that was used, to evaporate and harden the bar of soap properly.

I am having difficulty gathering the whole recipe in a chronological order. You say at the beginning that you heat up the oil to 200 degrees, but further down, you say you heat it up to 115 degrees. Which one is the correct temperature?

You can make lye from water and hardwood ashes. Is that natural? People in the old days used natural wood ash, hardwood, and water, to make "organic" lye. They saved the woodash for a long time. Read something like Laura Ingalls' books. They talk about that ol' lye. They then used animal fat such as lard and beef tallow. That is why some soaps say "animal cruelty free." That's why some soap lather's better too, based on the fat used.

i wouldnt eat a sweetpea flower(toxic flower) yet ppl put into childrens soap. i wouldnt eat shea butter (taste horrid for one) but we use tht on our skin, i wouldnt eat alot of things i put on my skin, and i wouldn't put alot of things i eat on my skin. lol thts an odd statement you made.

I don't think using lye would make it not vegan. Lye comes from hard wood ashes. you can actually make your own lye by running water through the ashes, its a little more involved then that but there are videos on youtube about making lye.

Fight hate With Love not really, it is caustic soda, it starts off the soap making, saponification, by heating up, then during this process and when the soap is left to cure for at least four weeks, the lye is used up. So the finished soap does not contain the non organic chemical.

Lye, pre say, is toxic. However, the emulsification of the oils with the lye, chemically changes it into soap.

she is talking about lye. but if you do proper research of lye, when soap is done curing, it no longer contains lye. it goes through a natural chemical process (lye is an alkaline salt basically) and so basically turns into something else. sounds confusing but its not really :) but you must let the soap cure for awhile after making, and then it is totally safe to use. technically the soap isnt 100% organic, because the lye isnt organic...but all the other ingredients you use can be organic.

It seems as though this person got cut off by the host before she could tell people that the soap needs to cure for several weeks before being used so that the lye doesn't burn your skin. I'm quite sure she cures her soap, but was unable to mention it because of time constraints. At least I hope so...

sorry to burst your bubble, but soapqueentv's video still uses lye. the only reason it is called "organic" melt and pour is because it uses organic oils in the melt and pour product.... but that product still contains lye. lye has to be used to make fats saponified in the soap. basically, melt and pour is the lye and base oil mixture that is already made for you, so you just need to melt it. regardless, either way, lye completely disappears by the time your soap is done curing, in 4-6 weeks.
