For anyone who might be in a similar situation I was. I have an absolute amalgamation of vr stuff from different systems now working. Vive base stations, Index controllers, and Quest 2 headset. Instead of getting the dongles, I was able to plug the Vive headset in to my computer while unplugging the HDMI from my computer and the HDMI from the vive hub splitter thing. This way the Indexes were communicating to SteamVR without using the headset as the video source. I would then start SteamVR and verify it detected the controller. (It would say headset not connected or error with the headset etc) Then I used Virtual Desktop to connect the quest 2 to my computer. I would press the restart headset button in steamvr OR just restart SteamVR. This would then connect the Quest 2 headset to Steam and now I could see the steam vr world. After that, I just ran OpenVR space calibrator and used Slow mode with the left knuckle and the quest 2 headset. This overlays both VR environments and matches them without needing to use the quest handsets. Naturally, it took an hour or two to get figured out (especially if I moved to a new house or room) however it only takes about 5 minutes if I am just restarting the system once it has been set up before. Things I learned. 1) Use room space set up on quest, not the sitting area. It seems to hold and remember where you are better which means a good portion of the time you won't need to recalibrate when starting up. 2) Put a piece of paper or something over the face sensor in the Quest 2 to prevent it going to sleep. Don't turn it off or let it go to sleep until you quit out of steamvr. Not sure why but that also seemed to help decrease the about of desyncs.

Great overview of the setup! I've actually had this exact set up for a while now but with two additions: 1. I have Vive trackers set up so I get full body tracking with the Quest 2 wirelessly. 2. The PC running Steam VR is literally on the other side of the house to the spare room that I use to play VR. I use a small Linux box in the VR room with Virtual Here to plug the dongles into. Then the PC accesses the USB dongles wirelessly also. It's awesome not being tethered to my PC in any way, not even in the same room. I can literally have my PC in the normal desktop gaming area but still have a completely empty room dedicated to room-scale VR with full body tracking. Also, I haven't tried it yet, BUT you can install Virtual Here on the Quest 2 itself and use a USB hub on that for the dongles to eliminate the need for any kind of Linux box. I'm a little concerned about eating up the precious bandwidth that Virtual Desktop needs though.

I know this video is fairly old already, but going to this video is so helpful because the valve index DP connector that routes to the headset directly breaks after a certain amount of use, and not only that, but they're super expensive and can't be found anywhere else cheaper. Having 3 basestations and 2 pairs of valve index controllers with the vive 3.0 tracking, so hoping this will help get rid of the valve index issue. Edit: I also have the super wireless dongle from tundra labs and they connect valve index controllers, so i hope this also works with the quest 2.

2:58 just says "SteamVR is unable to find any hardware to pair controllers to. Make sure your headset is connected" EDIT: Nevermind. The USB extension cable sent to me with the Watchmen dongles was faulty. Oh and if anyone in the future is reading this I encourage you to buy a Vive tracker 3.0 and a way to mount it to your Quest 3. The temporary calibration shown in this video will be erased after every play session and doesn't work that well to begin with. Your quest will always think your Index knuckles are where your Quest 3 controllers were: that is, about 2 inches off. But with a Vive tracker strapped to your Quest 3 the OpenVR-Calibration software can continuously adjust and correct itself throughout your play session, directly scanning the Index controllers. Or so the folks at r/MixedVR say. Personally, I think i'll buy the AMVR Quest 3 straps and just forget finger tracking altogether. no games really use it anyway.

After the index controllers are pairs is it possible to navigate in virtual desktop with these ? Every time I go back to virtual desktop out of game to navigate on my desktop the index controllers turn off because steam vr is on or off doesn’t matter I have to use quest controllers. Can I keep both quest controllers active while I’m using index controllers in vrchat or any other game? Or do I need to pop out the battery and pop back in when I need to interact with virtual desktop like change a song on Spotify

Previous tutorials from other KZbinrs mention you can just get old steam controllers on the cheap and flash those dongles to work as lighthouse dongles. Maybe wouldn't be cheaper, but probably faster way to get your hands on dongles.

Tip! you don't need to use the quest 2 controllers at all go from quest 2 ui in stand alone, open air link than connect. Now open steam with space calibrator installed & vr dongles plugged in. Turn on knuckle controllers they might be a few meters away from you right now. (mini game time) Snipe the option of the HMD quest 2 and also select a knuckle controller left or right and select calibrate. All you need to do now is hold your hand directly in front of you. rest/ lock your wrist under the headset it self and look around all axis like you're (holding a gun the the headset is the back stock). how the controller should be paired to your headset and the other hand will follow and you've now got accurate hand tracking.

Very interesting I just got a index but still have a quest 2 hate the cable on index I also have vive trackers but every time I used them I had to re-calibrate doing the whole fig 8 thing, you saying I don’t have to recalibrate though with the knuckle controllers interests me is that because of a new version of space Cali or just the way it works on the knuckle controllers, or is it the dongle thing you plugged in and you don’t have to calibrate more than once do you know?
@TappingTV3 жыл бұрын
It's the way he worded it I think -- he said "it stays after you shut down SteamVR" which is technically true... but the calibration does not stay when the Quest is reconnected via Oculus Link, or even if the headset is put to sleep. At least, as far as I've tested.

Thank you so much for this. I bought a game that requires Knuckles to play properly and now I can play it (I was going to refund it and possibly get the Quest version but...that'd cost a lot and take up space in the headset...) It'll also be great for games that involve things like physically throwing grenades/weapons. (Only downside was waiting about a month for the dongles I ordered to ship.)

9:45 That's not entirely true, the Knuckles can and likely will desync and start to drift over time. Sometimes if you calibrate properly (as in you do the figure-8's AND move across the entire playspace as you do it) on top of just being kinda lucky, desyncing could take upwards of months to get noticeable, but to say that someone won't need to do it again isn't accurate.

I've been at this for about an hour and I've had no luck. Half the time the base stations just shut off and the other half the controllers lose tracking entirely when I move them even the slightest amount, stopping calibration dead in it's tracks. Does anyone have any suggestions to fix this? No one seems to have any issues similar to mine...

It won’t keep the Calibration, then when I try to recalibrate steamvr blocks everything. This became not worth it real fast I just don’t have the patience.

9:14 You have it backwards. Knuckles controllers use inside out tracking. There are photodiodes on the controller to detect the lasers from the lighthouses. Oculus controllers use outside in tracking. There are LEDs on the controller which are picked up by cameras on the HMD.
@D-money8133 жыл бұрын
No, you have it. wrong.
@gyroninjamodder2 жыл бұрын
@kilsnacks No. Trackers have senses on them which can desert the infrared laser of a base station. The IMU is also on the tracked object. It's definitely inside out tracking.
@gyroninjamodder2 жыл бұрын
@kilsnacks You do not understand the terms you are using if you think I am wrong. Inside out tracking uses sensors on a tracked object to track that object. Outside in tracking done by having sensors pointed at the object that is being tracked. An Index controller uses inside out tracking because it uses sensor data from photodiodes on the controller to determine it's location in space. An Oculus touch controller uses outside in tracking because cameras on the HMD are pointed at the controller. Both of these controllers also use IMU data which is inside out tracking since the IMU is on the tracked object. A base station does not track the location of a controller. It does have an IMU on it and it transmits that data to the controller by flashing the laser. It also uses that IMU to stop the spinning if you move it. In regards to searching the internet, unfortunately most people are wrong. Comments like the one I made on this video serve to help correct this misinformation that has been spreading.
@gyroninjamodder2 жыл бұрын
@kilsnacks The HMD itself uses exclusively inside out tracking since the cameras are on the headset. In regards to HTC or Valve calling their headset outside in that must be miscommunication between the engineering and marketing departments. Outside in tracking solution like for the Oculus Rift had cameras which you had to set up in your room that talked to your computer. While this might seem similar to setting up base stations, base stations do not talk to your compute but merely spin a blinking laser that shines light through a lens which approximately makes a plane of light.
@legendfpv2 жыл бұрын
You're both wrong. They're both inside out tracked. Quest 2 is markerless, Index is marker based.

Does this work with fullbody tracking? I'm a quest 2 fullbody user and ive bought the 2 dongles necessary for the valve index controllers and I was wondering if you use OpenVr with trackers and it's calibration. Would it be tricky or a different process to do both trackers and index controllers? Edit: it does work with fullbody. It's essentially the same as having two trackers except, of course, you need to have the two quest controllers out of your playspace area or, take the battery off.

Have you gotten room scale set up when using the Quest 2 with index controllers? If so, how? I'm not able to get room scale games working with this. e.g. Trover Saves the Universe won't load unless you have room scale configured, and I can't seem to do that. When I first switched to Quest 2 wireless, my room scale was already set up from my previous HTC hardware. But recently I reformatted, and now I can't seem to set up room scale without a headset that uses the lighthouse trackers. If I try to set up room scale while using the Quest 2 with the Index Controllers, it claims there is no headset and won't proceed. If I use "Quick Calibrate" under the SteamVR -> Developer -> Room and Tracking settings, I end up in the floor. I tried fixing it with Playspace Mover, but when I load a game like Trover Saves the Universe, my perspective is all wrong.

This is a really late question and doubt it will get answered by anyone. But I have the Quest 2, as well as full body tracking pucks. This has worked fine for me in VR but the process of calibrating the pucks through the VR Space Cal requires me to use my quest controllers. I get my index controllers here in a few days but wanted to know if there was a certain way I should set up my trackers as well as the index controllers. The controllers save their space in SteamVR but my pucks don't. Any ideas on what I should or shouldn't do?
@brianharvey34042 жыл бұрын
(1) Does your quest 2 go on standby when you take it off? (2) When I launch steamVR the Space CAL app opens automatically but also closes automatically when steamVR is shutdown. Does this app need to remain running for the index controller to track properly? (3) does having a boundary setup in quest 2 matter? or can stationary boundary be used? (4) I seem to be stuck in a constant loop of calibration every time I launch steamVR as the Space CAL app keeps opening and steam VR shows all four controllers and base stations. So confused, any chance you could post an updated video with current version of the Space CAL app and using the PCVR link cable (not using virtual desktop)?
