Sinéad O’Connor performs an a cappella version of the hymn ‘Make Me a Channel of Your Peace’.
To promote a fundraiser for the charity Cradle, which help children and refugees displaced from the Yugoslavian war, five celebrities agree to undergo a makeover.
‘Head to Toe’ presenter Pat O’Mahony is given the grunge look. Model and presenter Michelle Rocca sports a 1970s outfit. ‘Fair City’ actress Caroline Rothwell becomes an Italian 1950s starlet. Singer Sinéad O’Connor is transformed into a goddess and singer with The Dubliners Ronnie Drew is remodelled as a distinguished gentleman.
Despite her atypical attire, Sinéad O’Connor accepts the request to sing a song. Unaccompanied, she performs the hymn ‘Make me a Channel of Your Peace’. This is an adaptation of an anonymous text known as the ‘Prayer of Saint Francis’. The melody for this hymn was composed in 1967 by South African songwriter Sebastian Temple.
This episode of ‘The Late Late Show’ was broadcast on 26 March 1993. The presenter is Gay Byrne.

And as for human rights advocacy - once again humanity is stripping the most vulnerable of its members of their most basic right (the Right to Life) which has now become a privilege (no longer a "right") a privilege granted to the unborn by mothers and a privilege afforded to the old, infirm, disabled and unwanted - by doctors who decide who shall and who shall be put on life support (and for how long.) Religion is no longer the most relevant factor when quality & quantity of life are based on human privilege rather than the Creator, God.
@marypower1261

Typo: it is doctors who decide who shall and who shall NOT be placed on life support. And the duration of that life support, if given. Likewise, it was doctors who master-minded the holocaust in the death camps of ww2.

It's a truly lovely sentiment from a wonderful singer. But in my 73 years, I've never understood why we need a Master or a God to give us *his* peace to channel. If we can find it within ourselves, through meditation or whatever works for us, then perhaps we might have something really valuable to share. Just saying... 😇

I loved 1st and 2nd Grade in Catholic grammar school. We went to Mass every Friday, then it was lunch, and then Art 🎨!!!!!!!!! I thought that was just the best day ever. No matter how bad the week was, Friday was always great !!!!!!!! The best part about being in 1st or 2nd Grade was that they filled the first front row pews of the church. If you were lucky enough to be the 6th person in line, you would be in the very first pew on the end of the aisle in church. That meant you were closest to the altar and would be the first one out in line for communion !!!!!!!!!!!! We always sang these old fashioned songs 🎵 from the old misselettes. I loved this song and Were You There When They Crucified My Lord. Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace was never more beautiful than this rendition by Sinead !!!!!!!!!!!!!! She literally sings like an angel !!!!!!!!! Why she was not given more credit for her talent and accomplishments is unbelievable !!!!!! I have loved her music since the early 90's when I first discovered her songs at City Gardens, Trenton, NJ !!!!!!!!!!!!! Her legacy of shining light in the darkness, will never be forgotten. Anyone who has been shut out, or left to survive on their own, only need listen to her profound combination of songs !!!!!!!!!! She was bold and brave in the face of all intense adversity !!!!!!!! I would consider her a Modern Day Saint !!!!!!!!!!!!! kzbin.info/www/bejne/maa9Zp-enNpobLM

Do you remember Sinéad ripping up the picture of pope John Paul 2, she was exposing the RCC ( not the deceived catholic people) for all the pain, suffering and death they have been responsible for. The dark ages, the holy wars, the inquisition, the crusades..75 million true Bible believers slaughtered by the RCC( low estimate). The modern day Vatican is responsible for drug trafficking, human trafficking, the Jesuit army( read their oath), controlling the federal reserve, money laundering, controlling banks and governments. The evil is unspeakable.

We used to sing this song during Mass as children at my elementary/junior high school, St. Francis of Assisi, in Warwick, RI, now closed, sadly. Also, our priest, the late Reverend Timothy J. Gorton, died too young at the age of 65. I remember just one homily of his, and only an incomplete portion thereof: he was commenting, as priests do during he homily, on the day's Gospel reading, which had had to do with the end of the world, and Fr. Gorton said that in addition to the actual expectation of the eventuality of the end of the world, the passage could also be interpreted to address apocalypses, lowercase "a," of a more personal nature -- the death of loved ones, the discovery that one has terminal cancer, and the multitude of other problems that can shatter the pillars of a person's world. The need to rely on Christ was the same whether the apocalypse one faced was the Second Coming foretold in Revelations or the sort of catastrophe that besets people every single day. Fr. Gorton would have given this homily somewhere around the year 2000. I think it impressed me and stuck in my head because I had the unmistakable sense that he knew whereof he spoke. In 2012, Fr. Gorton's nephew, Jamie Wilkinson, accused him of having molested him on two occasions in a church, sometime during the 80's. Fr. Gorton was defrocked and forbidden to perform priestly functions like Masses and such. Since Mr. Wilkinson accused Fr. Gorton after the statue of limitations had run out, Fr. Groton did not face charges, though Mr. Wilson had brought them to the police. The priest I knew was a warm, caring, wise and trustworthy father figure. Still, he did something with me most people today would consider questionable at best: he invited me as a boy alone into his rectory to chat for an hour here and there during school hours. He never did hurt me. On the contrary, I felt perfectly safe and happy to talk to him one-on-one. He told me of his diabetes and the possibility that a toe or foot or something might someday have to be amputated. He also give me an issue of "Vocations" magazine. Come to think of it, I may have told him at the time that I'd been thinking of the priesthood, and he may have offered to chat more about it; nurturing possible vocations, in my experience from my bygone Catholic days, is not an unusual preoccupation of those who have themselves made religious vows. I believed then, and I continue to believe now, that Fr. Gorton was, at bottom, the kind, caring, and fatherly man he presented himself to be. Did he do what his nephew accused him of? I wouldn't know but I rather believe Mr. Wilkinson, if for no other reason than he sounded sincere in his interview with a local paper. If Fr. Gorton did commit these acts, I neither exonerate nor condemn him. For one, the burden of this falls mainly on the victim, and on God, if you believe in God, and not on the multitude of very slightly, tangentially affected third parties like myself. For another, my experiences of Fr. Gorton make it impossible for me to reduce the complexity of the man (what little I saw of it, anyway) to either to devil or angel. He was something in between those extremes: human. Fr. Gorton died on June 18, 2021, the day President Biden signed the law that elevated Juneteenth to the status of federal holiday, and two days before Father's Day, in the same hospice where my grandmother died 406 days later at the age of 92. This Prayer of St. Francis recalls moments of happiness, warmth and peace in that place, that St. Francis of Assisi Church, now hidden irrevocably behind the curtain of time. Fr. Gorton was one but nevertheless an essential reason for the warmth, peacefulness and togetherness I felt when I sang that song in church alongside my classmates beneath the sunlight that penetrated the stained glass windows and covered the assembly with their brightly colored hues, and in that atmosphere smelling always faintly of incense and fresh flowers. Were I still Christian today, I might end this by saying Jesus had made Fr. Gorton a channel of His peace for me. I don't believe in an afterlife, but as I face the sadness of the past I hope Fr. Gorton found peace in this life and got to keep it in his heart until the very end.
