I don't do "house plants" but I have a garden, so I totally agree with you about making your peace with pests. Totally eradication isn't possible, without harming the plants or yourself. So just do what you can to interrupt their vibe. That's all you really can, safely, do.

Haven't tried this yet, but totally agree with your philosophy. I live in a hundred year old house and I have plenty of small spiders. I let them alone and they do my pest control mostly. I feel very bad when I have to vacumm around my plants sucking up my pest control crew.

OMG same! I too live in a historic home (built in 1865). I have so many spiders and I never bother them. We’re getting the building fumigated for termites next month and I’m sad because it’s going to kill all the spiders too! 😭

Hey, I am so excited to hear your philosophy on mite control. I am the same with my #1 problem mealy bugs on my Clivias. I go in inspect. If I see any, I hand smush. If the get too bad, I use earths ally. I get rid of scales manually too. It’s a bit of work but if you make it a routine, it’s effective.

You inspired me some time ago to buy an ostrich feather duster but haven’t really got into the habit of using it. My enemy is not the spider mites but the aphids and mealy bugs! 😩 But I should be using the duster for dusting my plants. I’m looking forward to the longer clip on the topic.

Dana! L-O-V-E your channel. So helpful… Welp, it’s official…I have spider mites on my Alocasia green velv (Freydek). It was a rescue over a year ago, never had a problem but recently brought in some orchids from a grower in FL. Voila. Question is: are you still only treating w feather duster? I actually do feather dust the DUST bc I live in such a dry, arid environment…but never much paid attention to underside. I see your feather-dusting videos are from a year ago and 6 months ago…so just wondering if still effective in your world and recommended? Thanks~S

Such good info about the systemics! No one else talks about that! I’d be worried about the feather duster spreading the mites to other nearby plants. Do you do this when other plants are close or just if the Alocasia is separate a bit?

They’re likely fungus gnats. If they are they’re very easy to control. The biological insecticide Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) will kill the larvae, thus ending their life cycle so they don’t become adult flys. There are BTI drops as well as a product called Mosquito Bits that’s widely available. Water with it at every watering until they’re all gone. For the adults that are currently flying around, sticky traps work best.
