In today's video, it is called "Silencing the Alarm" originally by Donna Eden, taught by Robin Shapiro. You can use this exercise over and over again, as little or as much (no limit) as needed in the moment. This exercise can help work with slowing down your nervous system when you're experiencing trauma-symptoms, anxiety, stress and overwhelm. Some examples of trauma-symptoms may include irritability, anger, on guard for danger, guilt, shame, trouble sleeping and concentrating, flashbacks and easily being startled.

Thank you for this video. I have a quick question. What is the physiological reason behind breathing in only halfway versus a full inhale? Just curious.
@CalmwithKyle
@CalmwithKyle 2 жыл бұрын
You bet, Whitney! Great question - I'll do my best to answer this. So when we feel anxious (or other emotions that leave us heightened) some key changes happen, typically changing in breathing patterns, increased heart rate, tension and sweatiness to name a few. With anxiety, we tend to breathe more shallow, and this can be with either faster inhales and exhales, or longer inhales without a proper exhale. As a result, these breathing patterns increase out sympathetic nervous system activation. Doing a half of an inhale and then a longer exhale allows us to shorten the sympathetic activation and increase our parasympathetic activation (which is our rest and digest system). This then results in slowing the racing physiological symptoms and reduce anxiety levels. Hope this makes sense! If you have not already, I have a breathing exercise in a video called the 4-7-8 that also does the same thing. Check it out if you'd like. :) As a side note, I'll also go deeper into these systems of our body in a future video!

@CalmwithKyle That's exactly what I was thinking the half breath was for! I'm too smart for my britches! Lol😂😂😂 But I only knew cause I researched all this.

Hello, Thank you for the technique. What is the reason for the half breaths in each time as opposed to full breaths? Thank you!

@Heather MacKinnon Hi Heather, that's a good point. Are you able to use ear buds instead of full covered ones? If not, you can watch the video for the instruction, then take headphones off and follow the visual. Alternatively, the pressing around the ear doesn't have to be in the exact spot and you can adjust to do it around the ear phones. Hope this helps.

Wow, this is really great Kyle. It definitely helps you focus on a longer exhale to help activate the parasympathetic response, very cool! Thank you!! 😁❤️🙏

In a nutshell, Half-breath interrupts the hyperventilation when our sympathetic nervous system is overactivated.

Good observation. If you're noticing a relaxation without being able to do that portion, then it's likely still taking effect.
