Great shots and advice Gary, and you're right about the rejection, sooner or later someone will say yes.

I really like your approach, see the "no" as given and keep asking to find the "yes". So there's no reason to be disappointed, it's just the process.

Good advice Gary. There is zero consequence to a “no”. Have the confidence to move on and eventually someone will say “yes”. Great shots a usual. Cheers.

I think the consequence of a "no" is more nuanced - it depends very much on the individual - a "no" can have a psychological consequence for the individual in terms of their self-esteem and confidence - it doesn't have to, I think this is the point, but the reality is that it CAN, depending on the individual

Excellent video Gaz , as you know I love asking strangers for a portrait, but how I do it is by careful selection, by that I mean I weigh people up first , try and figure out if they might be up for it, I dont ask pretty woman , they have to have some character, an oddity, something different to the stereo typical person on the street .

Another great and instructive video, how close are you getting with the 16mm for these shots, given distortion etc.
@LASHMAR12 күн бұрын
@willgreig8912 close man. A foot. However close I need to get the shot I want. I don’t shoot street portraits in the way I shoot client portraits. The distortion is the distortion I want no more no less. I’m not shooting models or brides. Don’t get me wrong I don’t want grotesque images but I will amplify character on purpose using wider lenses

Another great video Gary , utterly fearless ! Love that , great images 😊👍🏻
@martingreenberg8707 күн бұрын
Gear question. Why do you use the 16mm lens. I know this is a personal question. Traditionally a 35 or 56mm APSC lens would be selected for portraiture. You aren’t getting the wide angle distortion I might have expected. Plus you have to get closer to your subject using a wide angle lens. I bet you view having to get closer to your subject as a benefit. Mask On Nurse Marty (Ret)

@@martingreenberg870 I’m a portrait photographer mate. It’s my job for 17 years. I used 85mm and 50mm for portraits here and there back in the day but I hate that look. You have to remember I’ve shot over 10,000 portraits and for musicians and celebrities, etc. I want a hint of peculiarity in my portraits. Some street portraits I shoot with a 13mm. My next video for example. But it takes a lot of practice. + distortion in some of my street portraits is invited by me. I also shoot with the 35mm for a lot of client portraits as you have to be more careful. It has nothing to do with subject proximity. I’d be close with a 50mm. I wouldn’t advice most people to shoot portraits that wide - people fck it up and it veers into grotesque
