I’m not black, but I feel the same way. Like I, a normal person, don’t care if they wanna make a character black. But because there are so many racist weirdos, the black actors that play these characters end up suffering the most from the backlash. I remember when Annie 2014 came out. So many ppl were being racist and hateful because Annie was black. Any attention is good attention to the company’s. When they make characters black they know they are gonna get both good and negative press. I don’t care if they wanna make characters black. I have so many white characters to choose from. Nothing is being taken from me. But when it comes to ppls favorite characters they get protective. And I just feel so bad for the black actors that become the topic of a controversy that of a they didn’t start.

I am too. It just puts a big target on our backs. And while I support it, it does still feel lazy that they cast a young woman of color into a role who was originally white in a remake that no one asked for, instead of allowing black animators to create original stories with black characters.

With regards to HTTYD, I don't care really since the animated franchise had a few Black people here and there too and had a few anachronisms as well so the idea of a version of Astrid having Black ancestry isn't wild to me in a franchise that never cared too much about historical accuracy either(they had a minor character named freaking Chagatai Khan in the third movie, which is set centuries before the birth of the historical Chaghatai Khan). Though I am confident Nico Parker's portrayal of her won't change any character lore of her in this remade movie so these guys are just plain stupid for complaining about it. With regards to the LGBT stuff, you are either irreligious, identify with a religion but also politically identify as liberal, a bit too horny or you're stupid. As far as religious people like me are concerned, those "diverse" books may as well be CP. And if you want to appeal to the "But same sex partners can consent, children can't. Big difference" argument, then it's hardly any different than CONSENSUAL inc*st stuff. I mean, would it be okay if they were both infertile?! Or siblings of the same sex?! For your kind information, sodomy(a man penetrating another man) is so horrible a deed that they need to be literally stoned to end their life as a merciful punishment. Yes, that's how horrible of a crime it is. Only thing worse is I guess incest and bestiality and that's just a guess. Lesbianism isn't as bad but it's definitely horrible and deserving of severe punishment. Why should people just ignore that FACT just so a bunch of degenerates who love to engage in inhuman acts could be degenerates who love to engage in inhuman acts?! There should be no tolerance for crimes worthy of getting stoned to death as mere punishment. That is no more diversity than representation of necrophiliacs and grapists as heroes.(And those existed in some ancient polytheistic mythologies).

We can definitely enjoy Leah's portrayal of Annabeth. Unlike, let's say, Rapunzel, her blond hair and her grey eyes were not important to the story at all. This Astrid situation is more like Rapunzel than Annabeth. Percy Jackson takes place in 21st century America. Annabeth could plausibly be black. But Astrid lives in Scandinavia in the Viking Age (800-1050). It's like casting Lupita Nyong'o as the live-action Rapunzel while keeping the setting and time period the same. The aesthetic of the Kingdom of Corona, Flynn Rider, and Mother Gothel are all kept the same...except for Rapunzel.

She wants to stick to the original story so bad that she forgets the “original” stories aren’t even the original, and she used Snow White to show that which is funny because in the original story, she forced the evil queen to wear hot iron slippers and made her dance to death, and in the original Cinderella, the evil stepmother forces her own daughters to cut off parts of their feet so that they could fit into the shoe, among of countless story’s as well. So it’s funny she tries to complain that it’s not original to the story even though the real original stores were rewritten for the purpose of appealing to all audiences. Also I can say with full confidence, as a big fan of httrd and as a Scandinavian woman and I couldn’t care less about what the actress playing Astrid looks like, I just want her to nail down Astrid’s personality.

My only gripe about this whole race issue is that it feels like they're picking and choosing the most divisive roles to swap races. Just about all of them are rolls that used to be white women and are now women of color. It feels disingenuous, because instead of creating new wholesome stories where these women could absolutely kill it, they're now setting these actors up to face massive backlash for being a different color than the original, and it feels like they're actively hunting for fights about race and roles.
