Back in the 90s my family was poor but my father was able to buy us a Genesis model 2 from a pawn shop along with Shaq Fu. I knew it was a bad game but I still thanked my dad and gave him a hug. Funny enough the game grew on me as I played it more.

To Shaq Fu's credit, they avoided the easy route of making a basketball game out of a basketball player and I appreciate the originality in the genre choice. As for predicting which game I think will be worse... well the SNES has more buttons, so that gives the Mega Drive version the advantage in being worse. 1:23 - Welp; was not expecting Pat's dream to have absolutely nothing to do with the game being reviewed... unless this is a metaphor for a buggy game. 3:47 - I enjoyed learning about this fact and it... oddly explains a lot. Shaq Fu has always had a stiffness to the movement yet the animation manages to look nice at the same, much like a cinematic platformer. 4:39 - So far, the Mega Drive version is surprisingly looking a little better. The SNES version has a smoother look, but the dots of the Mega Drive environments give a greater sense of texture. The rocks look grainy and the grassy hills in the distance look more likely. 7:02 - Shaq Fu managing more here than a lot of fighting games with including arcade endings to go alongside the devoted story mode. Gosh... this game actually had a lot of love poured into it. 7:44 - Like, I know the gameplay is the thing that truly holds Shaq Fu back, but the critiques here for the graphics and presentation are so hilariously minor. It's kind of amazing. This truly had the makings of a great game, just not the gameplay part. 10:53 - Gosh, I feel sorry for the poor developer on the SNES version here. As for the songs, I think Sega's is better here. The SNES has a better sound quality but to the Mega Drive's credit, they don't try to replicate exactly what the SNES is doing with it's music. They change quite a bit of the beat and end up making the music rather distinctive and a little more exotic in some ways. 13:51 - An yet, it's a nice feature. The problem I see here is the sheer amount of buttons you need for everything. Perhaps 3 or even 2 attack buttons would have been better than having two Lights and two Heavy attacks. 15:00 - Yeah, missing a whole five characters is pretty significant for a fighting game. Seems like the SNES has a clean sweep of being the worse version of Shaq Fu. 19:50 - The beard joke got a real good laugh out of me. Fantastic video!

Graphics: Both versions are cropped. SNES has less levels. SNES is worse here. Presentation: Less details in all departments for SNES. SNES is worse here. Sounds: There may be a little bit more songs on Genesis, but it is nothing to brag or gripe about. Eveything else is equal. Tie. Gameplay: I never played the SNES version, but I have played the Genesis version. The controls are poor. Other people have said that the SNES controls are smoother than Genesis. I'd rather take less characters over broken controls. More scoreboards means nothing in the long run. If you want to brag or gripe about that, what is wrong with you? Segs has the worst of this department in my book. SNES does come out worse than Genesis, but I'd rather play SNES because of the smoother gameplay. Wolfchild is next.

I have been waiting for this! Shaq Fu was impossible to ignore forever for Console Wars! Personally I bought years ago both the SNES and MD versions !!! And since Shaq Fu was developed on the Sega platform and then ported to the SNES. The Sega version of Shaq Fu has 5 more playable characters; Auroch, Colonel, Diesel, Leotsu & Nezu + 3 more stages; The Lab, The Wasteland & Yasko Mines. Also the Sega version has a longer story mode. Why content was lost is anyone's guess I guess, but many developers including Delphine Software found it much easier to work with software on the MD/Genesis and then port it all over to the SNES platform rather then vice-versa. Also Sega had a lower license fee so that could also be a factor for many developers.

@@SomeOrangeCat - The game is graphical, design and sound wise a very good fighting game. And I have been playing it on both systems back then and liked it. The only thing that ruins the full expesrience is the CONTROLS. That's it. A game can't be rated a disaster like it has if all else is decent to good but the controls only. However that is also the most important factor to work with any game or else it will not be regarded that well. Still I find this game decent enough among 16-bit fighting games as it requires more practise to master it and find your character(s) that work for you (well in VS. mode). Balls, Heavy Nova, Fat-Man, Batman Forever and others was worse fighting then this.

That's kind of the problem with consensus-thinking, it can be hard to say anything good about what the group deems bad.🤔 Like I think at the very least it's a graphically lush title with some excellent pixel art. Yeah a Delphine special using small sprites with many frames, but even SF2 has moves that are only use two frames so excellence in the genre isn't about smooth animation. 6:00 Hey it could have gone that way, actually a lot of stories of game development along those lines.😉 A really tough one to rate between versions as the cross platform work was fairly seamless in Shaq Fu which is actually something else to praise too. Most of the time the Genesis one would look much worse, or the SNES one would be lacking in colors if the source art was too Genesis optimal. This one definitely came down to nitpicking the finer presentation points.😐Great sketches guys, love that commentary on recent ancient monuments.😅

I swear I am the only person that liked this game. This game isn't anywhere as bad as others' claim. I didn't hear negative things about this game until after AVGN fad hit. I think the earliest I heard the propaganda was from Screw Attack. They did a podcast about how they hated the game 'cause they couldn't beat it. This prompted their fans to nod their heads and agree without even playing it-- till this day, the only people that hate it are ones that don't play fighting games and try to play it like Street Fighter. Which makes sense since Screw Attack themselves didn't play games [we found that out during gamer-gate], especially not fighters. It's its own game. It has its own rules. If you try to play it like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat then it's a "bad" game. Also, I believe the story behind NES missing features is the team was told the game was suppose to be Sega exclusive, and the plains were changed like 3 months before release; they had to scramble to translate everything into the NES. Great show. Love it.

All in all, this is actually a pretty fun game -- and as you guys said, there's actually a lot of real effort that went into the graphics and presentation. No idea why it gets the bad rap that it does. I mean... it's nowhere near as good as Michael Jordan Chaos in the Windy City, but it's a perfectly fun game. Anyway, nice video, fellas. Had no idea there was so much missing in the snes game. Also, the sequel wasn't a half bad beat-em-up either.
