The technique used to render the inferior graphics on the Genesis is called Dithering. Since the Genesis can't display as many colors at once the designers have to "cheat" by placing different colored pixels next to each other in a pattern to simulate the missing detail. It works well enough on a CRT where everything is a bit blurrier but even back in the day you'd probably notice the difference in quality. Dithering is also commonly used to simulate shadows, even the SNES version does this with alternating black and transparent pixels in a checkerboard pattern.

Dithering usually looks fine enough, and probably would have here. The main problem is that the Genesis version just cranks up the contrast. Stuff that's supposed to blend into the shadows instead leaps out from them, and overall the colours don't blend as well. Don't blame dithering, when it's used correctly it looks just fine.

Maximum carnage is one of my favorite games of all time but I absolutely despise separation anxiety it was such a downgrade I saw that it was obviously either a cash grab or they wanted to make sure that both systems could run two player mode so they had to downgrade so much I never played it and never will this is the most of this game I have ever seen

Separation Anxiety is repetitive and difficult, and there are definitely better 16-bit beat 'em ups out there, but I wouldn't go so far as to call it a 'bad' game. I'm a little more forgiving as I got this game as a gift in my Easter basket. I got Out of This World on SNES another year. On a holiday where most kids just got candy, my mom used to fill my Easter basket with budget SNES games and Archie Sonic comics. My mom fucking rocks, I should give her a call.

honestly i think it's one of the better snes games, all beat em ups are repetitive, the gameplay is smooth as hell and the music is top tier, only downside is you fight the same bosses a lot but it never really bothered me playing through the game

I feel like this episode really nailed the nostalgia goggles coming off. I had a very similar transition from "Oh yeah that game was awesome!" to "Oh, I was a kid that consumed anything actiony with super heroes in it and didn't know better." Another great episode!

Given the release year (1995), Separation Anxiety reeks of Acclaim quickly and cheaply throwing together a Maximum Carnage sequel out there on SNES & Genesis as one last cashgrab before audiences moved on to the 5th generation of consoles. On the plus side though, "Less Crappy" is a solid third category for future Console War episodes; there are loads of licensed games for both consoles out there that would more than fit that kind of contest.

2:22 - Oh my gosh, I have this exact same sentiment! I don't get this obsession with making as many games as possible open world. Anyway, as for the game covered itself, this was certainly quite a twist to the formula. A shame the game didn't turn out so great but I did actually appreciate the graphics. The bold outlines have a wonderful pop for the characters and the designs are simple enough that even I could draw them.

Great episode. A big first for this show, where both games wound up being "not as good" but "not so bad" as anybody remembers. I don't remember if played this game as kid, but looking at the footage of this game, while it does look graphically good, the game is a real step down from "Maximum Carnage". I am curious about how well was the comic storyline was received by the viewers here. Plus if I wanted a particular game to be remade then this one and Maximum Carnage to be visited in a future Spiderman game. You know I will be looking forward to The Death and Return of Superman covered here. I recall the movies were released years after this controversial storyline but I liked those alt. Supermen characters like Steel and Eradicator. My surprise is that those games never got covered so I do want know Console Wars opinions on this.

I bought this game after loving Maximum Carnage. I thought that being able to do 2 player Co-Op would make this game perfect. I ended up taking the game back the next day. Maximum Carnage had satisfying motion comic cut scenes as a reward for completing each stage. Better music, more assists, and sprites. This game was a huge downgrade.

My cousins had this cartridge (SNES), and actually, we liked and played a lot, but we really always get tired near the last stages. There's a place in the forest, where you can grab lives indefinitely, so we always manages to finish, after grabbing a lot of lives. Not a good game, after all, but back in the day, was serviceable.

Whoa, I'd forgotten about this game! I now vaguely recall a lot of hype in magazines, which soon calmed down as soon as this massive disappointment actually released. The name was (years before we got a dog) probably the first time I'd heard the term 'separation anxiety' anywhere. It actually takes a lot of luck and effort to make a decent home port of side-scrolling beat-'em-up and Marvel certainly failed to strike gold twice in a row here. And yeah, I don't remember there being a lot of difference between the two console versions either, so this was a great choice for this channel to cover. As for this series as a whole: well, it goes from strength to strength. Not only do we still get great sketches at the start and end of each video, more and more mid-comparison cutaways are sneaking in too, without spoiling the flow of the review. Totally agree about lazy generic mooks and the bad fetchquest:combat ratio in most modern open-world titles. Nice to know the next Spider-Man game will seemingly have PS/Xbox crossplay too. ;) Lastly, I feel as if I'm a little late to the party again, coming in a few days after the premiere, but like you guys I was also super busy in the couple months leading up to when this episode dropped.

I was a huge Spider-Man fan in the 90’s and I loved Maximum Carnage. When I found out a sequel was in the works I began saving my $3 a week allowance in eager anticipation. I picked up the Genesis version shortly after release and instantly regretted my purchase. Although the addition of 2 player co-op was a nice enhancement, every other aspect of this game was a downgrade. My stomach sank knowing I had wasted so many weeks of allowance on such a half assed cash grab.

I remember being so disappointed with Separation Anxiety, that I traded it in for something else. The only good thing about it was the additional co-op gameplay. They one thing Maximum Carnage needed to be great. Everything else was heavily downgraded. Visuals looked worse. Soundtrack was Techno (which was a step down for me). Presentation was abysmal and didn't reflect the comicbook saga. It was like LJN accidentally made a decent game in Maximum Carnage and they got afraid of making a good game that could top it. So they went back to their old disappointing ways with licenses that we love to consume.

The raw sound of the Genesis version is better listening to both. The SNES one is very hollow even if it has more sounds and vocals and more tracks. It's nice to see a Genesis title not use some GEMS soundfount and have a rich bass. Also keep up the fun, great work!!! I love your guys and the channel a ton.

@@tolani05 the opening theme for example is what I consider to be superior. The rich, bold, deep bass and power is excellent. The SNES theme is alright but a bit too cheery.
