Haha 😄 At least, behind the fun, it is also a soft and gentle way to indicate that they may have an issue with that radio indeed. I'm not an expert here, but I think radios must meet certain requirements to be authorized to broadcast on frequencies, and there is a certificate for each radio installed in commercial jets.

When they get told that the radio is bad, they start talking louder thinking that they may get clearer. But the actual problem is that they are too loud, so talking louder only makes it worse. Probably it can be improved by talking less loud or moving the microphone further from the mouth.

We had a friend in high school ( we all had CBs w/23 channels ) who was unintelligible, we worked with him a few different times trying to get it fixed, it ended up being a combination of some kind of screw on booster for the Mike where it plugged into the CB, him kissing the Mike to talk and talking too loud. Once we tossed the booster the other two problems revealed themselves immediately. I just found an old 40 channel sitting in a drawer in my garage a couple weeks ago, I don't think I'll mess with it though.....

I visualize the squawk sheet handed to the flight school or mechanic. "Radio garbled, ATC said I sounded like Charlie Brown's Teacher." Doesn't feel so hurtful when they're insulting a bad radio rather than the pilot. Love the controller's attitude. Now had this happened with that controller at San Carlos, I'm not sure if it would be a light gun or AA gun he'd be using to help them get down.

A nice way of stating that you extended way to long before turning base. I did that and I got chewed out. I was giving a little extra space between the aircraft that was on final before I turned base. I am a student pilot. Earlier this month while conducting practice approaches with my CFII, I very nicely requested the approach controller who just came on frequency to slow her speech since it was extremely-rapid and practically unintelligible. Her response was to order me to cancel the approach, climb and turn away from the final approach course, squawk VFR, frequency change approved. I didn't want to start an argument because that would have ended up on this KZbin channel. But if any controllers are viewing this, many of you are speaking way too fast, combining syllables and entire words, and that impairs safety.

He wasn't talking about a flare gun, but rather a light gun. It's exactly what it sounds like: a bright, directional light that the Tower controllers can aim at an aircraft to give them signals in the case of radio failure. They have different colors and signals that they can flash for various different messages. Pilots are trained on these in case it's ever needed if we can't hear Tower for some reason. In this case, though, it sounds like the airplane needed a light gun. - haha
