For what it's worth, the whole "If I can't pronounce the ingredients, it's bad!" is really not a good mentality to have and can be quite harmful to you in the long run. You won't be able to pronounce or even recognise so many things that make up your own body, but you can certainly easily pronounce "Hemlock" or "Foxglove" or "Nightshade" and those are all most certainly absolutely horrific to consume. That also goes for "whole" foods, "all natural" etc that also gets used. Because those 3 things are also just, natural plants. It's just about being more informed about what things are. As an example out of what you guys where using as examples of "unpronounceable weird things", xanthan gum is a very common food additive that's used to thicken and stabilise (to stop ingredients separating). It's created from fermenting stable sugars (glucose and sucrose), its name comes from the bacteria that's used for the fermentation! It's very safe to use and consume, even got tested a while back for health stuff and in mice it was shown to reduce certain types of tumours (not saying this can convert to health benefits to humans, but thought I might as well mention it anyway!). It's a pretty natural thing, and quite cool. A lot of the "unpronounceable" stuff is additives to help fortify your foods and such. Vitamins, minerals and more to help keep your health up. Sure a lot of it isn't and it's just america food stuff being american, but that's where being informed comes into things!
@Smileyyn9 ай бұрын
Thank you, this was my thought exactly when they said that!
@khills9 ай бұрын
Absolutely! We don’t want to encourage people to avoid things like preservatives or vitamins. We’re actually seeing this in skincare right now; people freaked out about preservatives so some companies removed them from products and… whattya know, products without preservatives go bad, mold, smell, etc. 🙄 It’s great to say folks should be food literate and know what goes into the packaged things they - and their pets! - are eating. But we shouldn’t scare folks away from “things they can’t pronounce” (especially when so much of their audience is young), because having a complex, or scientific, name doesn’t automatically equate to bad, or bad for you.
@skylarkblue19 ай бұрын
@@khills oh god yeah I heard about the anti-preservatives stuff in skincare 😬 if you want something to survive transport from where it's made to where it's sold to your house, and then survive days after that, it NEEDS preservatives in the vast majority of cases. It's like when people shout about "I can make bread with a handful of ingredients, why is bread in shops filled with so much crap!" Because it's vitamins! Minerals! So much fortified in bread you get in shops that's missing in your homemade loaves. And compare how long a homemade loaf lasts, you wouldn't get to stocking bread in shops if there were no preservatives!

Ed, I love you, but xanthan gum is just a binder in foods and benzonatate is prescription drug for treating coughs. Let's not demonize stuff in our food that we can't pronounce just because we don't know its function! Y'all are too smart for that! ♥
@ReptilianTeaDrinker9 ай бұрын
Seriously? That's what you took away from all this? Are you for real? Girl... Also, if Benzonatate is for sore throats, it should NOT be put into FOOD! Listen, I agree with you about ingredients that are hard to pronounce are not all bad, unless someone is allergic to those things; However, your comment comes off as a bit condescending and passive-aggressive, if anything. Not cool!
@nixienova9 ай бұрын
@@ReptilianTeaDrinker Where did I say it should be in food? I was remarking that it was silly to reference that because it's NOT in food. I think it's important to remember that we can be critical of people we like and that keeping each other in check is necessary. My comment was not to shame, but to inform. We have a lot of toxic people on the world who try to scare people out of eating perfectly fine food on the platform of it not being "natural". It's harmful. I respect and adore Snake discovery but that doesn't mean they're above scrutiny. My comment was not passive aggressive or rude. 🤷🏻♀️ Sorry you're offended on behalf of other people.

@@ReptilianTeaDrinker Why would you think this was my only takeaway? Did you know you can be critical of people you love and respect? In fact, you SHOULD be - we all learn from each other.
