I love how he mentions the memories that flood in when he cuts the fresh dill. I started growing dill right around the time my oldest son was born. After the first year leaving a lot of it go to seed i didnt have to plant any more. All of my boys love going down to the garden and picking fresh dill and putting it straight in their mouths. Its amazing how memories are tied to scents.

When I was growing up, my Father (a Russian immigrant) made the best tomato salad. He used locally grown New Jersey tomatoes (big and juicy), cukes (completely peeled; I do stripes like in your video), and spring onions (just the green stalks, not the white heads). He added equal volumes white vinegar and oil (then it was Mazola - everyone used Mazola for everything; I now use EV olive oil), and a little salt. That's it. The liquid at the bottom was perfect for dunking seeded rye bread. A true Russian tomato salad. I still make it today, many decades later. Please try it the Russian way and see what you think!

This is one of my all time favorite salads from my childhood until now. I do not use water at all, and I do not put in any sugar as I like it tart. My salad includes garlic powder (granulated) and I have recently used some Mrs. Dash (regular) for extra seasoning. P.S. Dill weed reminds me of my Grandma also. She grew it herself. For pickling she always used the seed heads which are so potent and tasty! P.S.S. My dad always sorted out only the onions at dinner time. No stinkin' salad for him . . .
