I know right. This wasn't sampled for "You Can't Touch This" by MC Hammer. It was Rick James Super Freak. If you can, check out She's Just A Girl. It was during the burgeoning Punk Rock/New Wave Movement. They also were one of many acts who did American Bandstand.

140 ding dongs agree with your comment. You have no idea what you are even talking about. Saying nothing back then was even close to this is the most moronic statement ever. Nearly every old band has an electric sound. The Talking Heads, Midnight Oil, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band are all similar to Devo but you say nothing is even close. Lmfao, OK.
@Bluenosegrows
@Bluenosegrows 3 жыл бұрын
you seem angry, Devo had a video on mtv in 1981, the talking head where still doing that eno thing, noone can even name a song they did before 1983 , im from the U.S and midnight, from my memory hit late 80's with bed are burning. lastly .. who the fvck is alex harvey... im not saying there was not place to hear electric sound.. it just wasnt on MTV and so main stream. not sure why you are so mad about it .. just how myself and a few others remeber it..
@joshuamasserant8215
@joshuamasserant8215 3 жыл бұрын
@@Bluenosegrows I'm not mad. 😂😂 You are just SOOOOOO wrong with incorrect information and knowledge. The Talking Heads and Midnight Oil both had similar and popular albums in the mid 70's. Before Devo did. You are going by what you know and heard . Well If I go by what I know Alex Harvey died in 1982 and made music from at least 1964 and made 6+ similar albums in the 70's before Devo was even around so everyone copied off of Alex Harvey. I guarantee you never even listened to Devo even. They are one of a kind for sure but there are still lots of bands, albums and songs back then that are identical.

"Whip It" dropped when I was in ninth grade. The song was different from anything else on the radio, but it didn't catch my buddies and me off guard the same way the music on their first album did. When you're ready for more from Devo, check out "Beautiful World", "Girl U Want", "Uncontrollable Urge", "Freedom of Choice", "Mongoloid", "Jocko Homo", or their covers of "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" and "Working in the Coal Mine" among others.

Spot on Brad & Lex. Sometimes this kind of music doesn't get much love, but as Brad said, if it makes people laugh and feel good, it has plenty of value. Lex's energy for these 80s songs is a perfect example. Who doesn't love seeing the robot 2 days in a row? Yesterday for Mr. Roboto and today for Whip it. So much fun!

It's famously Jaggers favourite Stones cover. He mentioned it still was in a BBC interview a few years ago as I recall. Here's the original story though - *"I thought it was the quintessential rock song," Mothersbaugh states. "In those days, to do a song cover, you had to get permission from the artist. So [Devo co-founder] Gerald Casale and I went to the Rolling Stones' manager's office in Manhattan and Mick Jagger came in and he just kind of looked at us. We put the record on the turntable, and after about 30 seconds, he jumps up and starts dancing around to it. Then he said to us, [in a British accent] 'That's my favorite version of this song!' To us, even that he was in the same room was pretty overwhelming." *

You're missing out on a real treat... We would dance to this stuff together with "Hey Mickey" from Toni Basil, "Rock Lobster" from theB-52's, Talking Heads, just fun music... Mark Mothersbaugh (Devo Singer)offered a different interpretation of the lyrics, saying they were written in the form of a subtle pep talk for United States President Jimmy Carter during the 1980 presidential election. The members of Devo supported Carter and feared the Republican candidate Ronald Reagan would win the election.[15] Mothersbaugh jokingly once said in an interview: "Come on Jimmy, get your shit together".[16] Huey notes that despite the song's novelty, there are violent undertones in the lyrics. He describes the process of whipping it to solve one's problems as "a sardonic portrait of a general, problematic aspect of the American psyche: the predilection for using force and violence to solve problems, vent frustration, and prove oneself to others

The funny thing is a lot of people were freaked out by Devo - they had these mechanical beats and structures, weird fixations with de-evolution, sex and the biting satire of simplistic American nationalism and values. They were called fascists and freaks, and were more associated with punk than pop music early on.

The 80's were Lit!!! Every genre was amazing in their own way. Some of us took longer to gravitate some genre's than others did.

Since you're so in to genres, this is New Wave and was popular in the late 70's to early 80's. Gary Newman's song "Cars" is another great example that's worthy of a reaction.

Music video is a must on this song, but I enjoyed..most ‘80s songs have a good music video to it. The fashions were awesome.

Making an iconic pop song is the hardest thing of all the things. There is no niche audience, you have to find that perfect mix that appeals to the masses in totality. When that happens and almost forty years later you're still digging it, it's magic.
