Just found this video after 2 weeks in hospital and now 3 weeks home. No clue about diverticulitis and barely any symptoms. My intermittent pain was on my right side and I unknowingly thought it had something to do with my appendix. Wish I had seen this video early on - would have alleviated a great deal of anxiety and provided me with information with which to question my doctors a little more in depth! Very interesting but is as concerning as it is heartening. The patient is very fortunate to have had the wherewithal and resources to find a doc with the competence to correctly diagnose and successfully treat her condition and to be able to transfer to another hospital to do that. I’m glad. Many Americans would not realistically have that as an option. There do indeed seem to be great options available for this condition but unfortunately much more available to some more than others…

Thank you for pointing that out. It's a very sad truth and it's a shame. I really appreciate the information from this video and the people on it conveying an important message. However, when the patient talked about how she was able to find the good doctor and with her help was able to heal her and to further become friends. Only thing came to mind was money and great resources. Very unfortunate for the masses. A innocent man can end up in jail for life, while a wealthy stone cold criminal with endless resources will be free as a bird. Life is so unfair. Nonetheless, the video is awesome and so are the people in it.

Your video presentation was amazing. Thank you for bringing awareness to diverticulitis. I have been suffering for at least six months with pain primarily in my lower left quadrant that also spreads across my bladder. The bulging pressure pushes on my bladder causing pee to pour down my legs upon standing. I've seen my PCP, urologist, gastroenterologist and next visit is with a pelvic physical therapist. My gastroenterologist thinks it's a pelvic prolapse. My gastro PA also ordered a special SIBO test because she thinks I have small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. She diagnosed me with constipation and said to take Miralax and come back in a month! I also have IBS, diverticulosis and stage 3 chronic kidney disease. I'm 72, female and I am worn out from seeing so many specialists and who can't figure out what's going on. All my tests are normal. Even my Cystoscopy, ultrasound and cat scan and blood work are normal. This morning I woke up in worse pain in my lower level side and low abdominal area. It is bulging and making it hard to walk, bend or lift. I have 101.9°and I can't eat because it causes explosive painful diarrhea. I wish I could find a doctor who could help me up here in Oregon.😢

I'm going through it at the moment. Hospitalized ! New findings are that seeds & nuts etc, DOES NOT cause it; but they don't help it either !! I can't eat nuts & seeds, so I know that it wasn't caused by that !! They are still finding new findings on this !!

The patient had a very fortunate but also very atypical experience. She got lucky finding a doctor to truly help her instead of the doctors in the first hospital who insisted on their misdiagnosis which is what typically happens. How she even got to stay in the first hospital for a month without her insurance kicking her out, baffles me. And then the huge hassle of getting approved to change hospitals in that condition. The medical community really does not understand diverticular problems since it's only recently become such a big problem. The advice changes almost annually - don't eat nuts, ok you can eat nuts. Have surgery, no don't have surgery. Antibiotics, yes or no. "The system" is really letting us down, and pushing blame back to the patient about "being their own best advocate" really is a cop-out.

I’m in hospital right now June 2nd 2023, in the UK. Within 3 days the Doctors here have said… IBD, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease… I can’t have an colonoscopy until the ‘infection’ has gone, pains mostly on my right side an middy abdomen. I’m in immense pain. On a antibiotic drip twice a day (day 3) pain is not going away, 🤦🏻‍♀️😢😢

This is a great video! Thank you! About three days ago, I started experiencing all these symptoms exactly as described. Fever, pressure on urinating 25 times per day with a sensation of pulling, weak stream, exhaustion, pain on left but really in middle. I think it really started two weeks ago when I couldn’t find a bathroom, when I finally found one, I was actually having the same pain I’m Having today but it felt like a knife and hot coal as I was keeled over just before I found the bathroom. I’ve taken Tylenol, that’s helping with pain a little and with fever. I’m going to the doctor tomorrow to get this checked and see if there’s any new steps. Also, I’m just assuming it’s diverticulitis based on symptoms and need a professional opinion to make sure. Based on everything I’ve read, I hope it is because it seems very manageable.

What was the hard to kill bacteria & which antibiotics were used? Did you get CDIFF from any of the antibiotics that they gave you?

They tested me for CDIFF and thankfully I was negative. My doctor was concerned about that as was I. It can be tough to treat from what I hear. The antibiotics they gave me were cefdinir and metronidazole. They gave me bad diarrhea for months. Eventually that went away. Knock on wood, I have not had a repeat episode of diverticulitis. I had my first diverticulitis attack at age 40.I never had another attack for 10 years.Then at 50 years old I had another attack. After that I started having attacks once a year. By the time I turned 57, I started having attacks more frequently that lasted about 3- 5 days. The last 3 years I had been having attacks closer together,( every other month). The last attack lasted 2 weeks, so I decided to see a surgeon. I too was admitted to the hospital for 3 weeks NPO with TPN and antibiotics 24/7.After 3 weeks I had robotic surgery, by Dr Al-Azzawi. I am 2 weeks post operative and I feel so much better and feel like I have my life back.

I had perforated diverticulitis 2 yrs ago, had a bag for four months then a reversal. I urge folks to know having a bag saved my life, and its not that bad, it didnt alter my life for the worse. I now follow a nutritarian diet and the book Eat to Live by Dr Joel Fuhrman changed my Life. Its the American diet thats awful

I took acidophilus right after I found out I had Diverticulitis. Anytime I get pain I take acidophilus. I got C diff from antibiotics and acidophilus helped with that.

I need your help. I’m in Memphis tn. I suffer all the time. I’ve almost died I was suptic and had to have abdominal surgery and I’ve been hospitalized. I know at least 15 times in my history of this and I’m only 40 years old. I am sick now with an episode and nothing seems to be helping up and running fever since 28 January and it’s now 5 February my stomach feels like it’s a battle going on inside of me and I’ve been trying to use the restroom with little to no luck even with laxatives and MiraLAX. I’ve also been taking Cipro Flagyl since Friday, 2 February.

Interesting. I was 77 y/o male In good health then had pains. Was scanned & operated on in less than 24 hrs.Had stomer and bag and in Hospital for 17 days. I had home nursing (I live alone) for ten months.After six months I was well enough for a reversal but had to wait another two. Reversal succesful 8 hrs surgery and about another eight months to be able say I had completely recovered.I had no alergies or other issues fortunatly. Left with a paunch I did not have before and a stomach that looks like a model train track. That is my experince. I like to say I could not have got through it with out the Nurses - Special people and of cause the medical profession. “…the bag is not a big deal…” from someone who has never had one..!! It WAS a big deal, I had leakage that literally burned the skin 😂where the bag attaches, painful not to mention problems thereafter with getting good seal when change. Dealing with feces like that, i was very active outdoors swimming, gardening etc and had to hide a bag……then faced another surgeon when i had healed enough to have take-down surgery who actually suggested i just live with the bag!!! “Looks like you re doing ok with it” he said to me!! Was told after the emergency open colectomy that I could have stoma repaired after 3 months, I had to wait 5 months due to covid (which shut down my hospital to visitors and elective surgeries day 2 after the emerg surgery) but am so glad I insisted upon the repair. Cannot imagine having lived with colostomy a day longer than I absolutely had to!!

I have had diverticulosis for over 20 years. I have had2 bad flare ups, which were thankfully treated with antibiotics. I have found that a daily multistrain probbiotic and making sure never to get constipated is important. Also, I am very careful to watch my diet. No tomato seeds, def no nuts are important.

I’m so glad I found this video. Thank you all so much. Last week I spent five days and four nights in the hospital emergency room to make shift ward. It was living hell over New Year’s. Never been hospitalized before scared to death. Thinking I’m gonna have to get a colostomy bag. Seen by many doctors none of whom had the expertise. Luckily I have a colon and rectal surgeon I used to see for ulcerative colitis 17 years ago when I went into remission and I’m going to see him today I feel so much better after watching your video thank you so much. This was the biggest scare of my life. I’m 58 years old and I’ve never had any health issues or surgery before other than ulcerative colitis in my 20s and 30s due to taking tetracycline at the time which destroyed my natural digestive bacteria. When I took that for acne in my 20s, thank you again.

I had Gallbladder surgery on September 9th 2024. Then I wound up with diarrhea that I couldn't shut off. So I called 911 because I was so bad it got watery. I was urinating and getting the diarrhea at the same time. Then the thought of getting surgery for the diverticulitis depresses me. I have been sad and depressed about this. The stuff I eat either gives me diarrhea or constipation. I don't know what to eat anymore. Then I don't want surgery because I don't want to wear a consiby bag. One women laughed about it and said how gross. I was upset because that would ruin my quality of life. Before my best friend died she said why do you want to live longer. And I said as long as I could still take care of myself and I stay healthy I don't mind living longer. My best friend died from end stage kidney failure. She has been dead for three years and I have nobody to talk to. I feel like I'm all alone I get shut out by everyone. I do what I can by myself I miss my best friend. We were like sisters and now that she is dead I have nobody to talk to. Because my best friend was deep and understood me.

Thank you for such a great instructional video - I am currently experiencing a bout of acute diverticulitis and on two rounds of antibiotics which seem to have had some impact. I was scared about the possibility of surgery and a colostomy bag - but now, I am more relieved. I'm so so worried. I'm on infection number three after a major attack in April of 2020. So, four total in this short period of time. I'm 50 and I'm deathly afraid of a bag! I feel like it would end a lot of dreams for me and also be a horrible thing to add to marriage. I can give up any foods, lose weight, but don't ask me to get a bag. Hoping my specialist is as good as you sound! :) My doc isn't so good. He just puts me on Cipro and Flagyl. Two meds that make me feel worse than the pain of Diverticulitis! Not loving life these days! PS: The hospital stay, I DID NOT have a fever, yet was very sick! You don't get a fever every time you have an infection. If you body isn't even trying to fight an infection, no fever.

I went in ER on 05/22/22 with extreme pain. After about 3 hrs, my pain level calmed to a 9 and I was taken into surgery. Surgeon removed 6" to 8 " of my colon just above my rectum. Found out that I had a severe perferated colon. A temporary colostomy was put in place. I was very pleased to listen to this interview with Tracey Childs, MD. This was very helpful. Now I am told that the temp colostomy is to allow the healing of the sections where separated. This will allow strength for re-connecting the two sections. But I heard Tami Leader Fuller say she had almost my same surgery and immediate rejoining of the colon sections. No colostomy bag. Maybe mine was too weak to join. I am told that because of the extreme infection, I am to not be very active for weeks. This was very helpful. Thank you.

Fever is an unreliable symptom, I don't run fevers , usually. Even when seriously ill. And body temp below , I think, 96.7 , is a sign of sepsis. There are common symptoms, but if you only rely on the most common ones, people die.

Thank you for the informative presentation. My Dad is 95 yo and has had diverticulosis for quite a few years. In the past 2 and a half years he has had more severe complications. Every 3 or so months he gets blood in his stool, a good amount. Twice he has lost consciousness in two separate episodes. We assume it is from the blood loss. At the hospital for these times the blood test showed he was severely anemic. He received transfusions and was put on an IV then a liquid diet. He usually stays in the hospital for a week. The past two times he had blood in his stool he did not become anemic. Every time this happens we bring him to the hospital because we don’t know if he is anemic. He always stays in for a week to make sure he stops bleeding and is not anemic. Of course, he is 95. The doctors say the only thing they can do is surgery, but they won’t because he is 95. Is there anything else we can do to avoid the hospital stay when this occurs. It seems if we knew that he was not anemic he would heal on his own. One of the times they went straight to a regular diet and he healed. Thank you for your time. Best, Glen

Thank you, Dr. Childs, Dr. Khan, and Ms. Fuller, for sharing your knowledge and this story. My attack of diverticulitis came about 3 weeks ago. I am still recovering on a low fiber diet before transitioning hopefully to a normal high fiber diet. The doctor at the ER told me I probably had diverticula for a while (maybe years). That is discouraging because nobody told me after my multiple colonoscopies that I had diverticulosis and to be aware of possible diverticulitis. I had several polyps a few years ago but no mention of diverticula. The CAT scan confirmed diverticulitis for which they put me on outpatient treatment of two antibiotics - cefdinir and metronidazole. The cramps are gone but my stools are not back to normal and I still have numerous bowel movements per day - all urgent and small in size. This is not normal. I suspect this is a long term result of one or both antibiotics. Hopefully this feeling I need to poop all the time goes away soon. I have been done with the antibiotics for two weeks now but the side effects on the pharmacy med sheet said cefdinir could cause diarrhea for weeks or months after usage! Maybe when I get back to a "normal" diet and am further removed from these meds, I will feel better. I do not want more antibiotics that is for sure. I have been taking more probiotics than my usual amount to replace the good flora killed off by the antibiotics. I have to be patient I guess.

@@shar7508 Probiotics and Apple Cider Vinegar. Otherwise you want a high fiber diet AFTER you have recovered from a diverticulitis attack. You want your colon to heal first.

Is it ok to eat meat? i have been eating meat every day I have been on a real food diet since I came out of hospital. Meat chicken eggs,fruit like paw paw, kiwi fruit blueberries watermelon sweet potato only with the first meal, and lactose organic yogurt. I feel great back in the gym after a few weeks resting And one teaspoon ACV with a meal and 1 teaspoon of MCT oil I am drinking lots of water

My sister had emergency surgery due to this issue about 4 years ago. They put in a colostomy and told her she couldn’t have it reversed because she would just need to have another stoma later. Out of fear she had lived with the stoma for almost 5 years now. Does this mean she will live this way for the rest of her life or is there a chance she could get it reversed?

I am having robotic surgery in 6 days. My colon issues started at 19, many different diagnoses IBS Microscopic colitis, ulcerated colitis. I am 73 and recently 3 months of diarrhea and pain. Not constipation. Eventually they found CDIF and I was on several antibiotics. Entered the hospital thru the ER and spent 10 days there. they found CDIF diverticulitis. Did the CDIF infection cause the damage? I have a drain into an abscess on my bladder, one on my left ovary and a fistula. Will I still have the attacks of cramping, diarrhea nausea? I have been taken to the ER 3 times in the last 10 years after an attack so dehydrated they could not find a pulse.

I couldn't find any information about CDIFF diverticulitis is there a such thing? Because last year I was healthy, until a dog bite. The doctors gave me multiple antibiotics, so I got CDIFF in March of this year. In July after I finally repaired my gut. I got bit again, way more antibiotics because the dogs bite had a dangerous bacteria, even intravenous antibiotics on top of pills. That was last July. Now this week pain lower left stomach, felt alot like CDIFF cramps but very tender. Doctor without a CT scan says that I have diverticulitis. I have been wondering if those bad toxin A and B were never destroyed and they have multiplied and are eating my stomach lining and intestines, being the standard of practice is not to test again?

This was so eye opening! This is why you HAVE to research any diagnosis, it’s literally life saving! I am fresh out of ER with gallbladder pains(I have gallstones) and after CT it was diverticulitis that was making me very uncomfortable. I didn’t have pain just very very uncomfortable and switch sides all the time. Still on antibiotics but scared for the future. This eased my mind and know there is hope Thanks!

I did a gallbladder flush 20 years ago after having a lot of gallbladder pain. Thankfully I haven't had issues since. It's worth a try and it can't hurt. It's not pleasant to suck down a bunch of olive oil and lemon juice, but it's better than surgery. You can google the recipe if you are interested.

I just found out that I have 33 mm sized gallstones and hundreds of small ones. I feel pressure in my right rib cage, my upper right shoulder and behind my right ear hurts all the time. Prior to the hospital finding the gall stones by a CT scan looking for intestine damage from CDIFF from antibiotics they thought I had diverticulitis 6 months ago but ruled it out. Now I just got gassy, then horrible lower left stomach pain, no fever. Doctor with no CT scan diagnosed me with diverticulitis. I said no to the antibiotics metronidazole which has bad side effects. I am bone brothing and made some healing tea. I hope it works, but I am more concerned about the gall bladder. The gastrologist sad that they won't shrink them or blast them, I have to wait for an attack, then he wants to take it out. I want to save my gall bladder because without one autoimmune disease is next.

I’m so happy I found this video. I was having all the symptoms and was telling my primary dr but nothing was done not even a blood test and I went to the walking clinic and told the dr the same the pulling and running to pee, fever, and the painful area and I even requested a ct scan bcz I was feeling terrible and got told that I didn’t need a ct scan and got send home with a prescription for urinate infection without having an infection to quiet me down. I got very sick running again to the bathroom for 4 days went to see my regular dr n nothing was done again running to the bathroom for 4 days n I called the Gastro dr to let them know and requested an office visit n after i explain again my situation and she send me to get a ct scan bcz I couldn’t hold the nausea, pain, body weakness, plus diarrhea. They finally did the ct scan and found out the problem diverticulitis got a antibiotic for 7days after I finished all came back called dr and she prescribed another different antibiotics for 7 days I just finished then, still feeling weird and pain is slowly coming back. Im waiting until I get worse to go to the ER. I still have hope to start feeling as a normal normal person again.

What a fantastic video and absolutely stunning information. I’m 65 years old. My brother and my dad both have had diverticulitis. Both of them I’ve had surgeries with bags. I’ve never ever had stomach issues until this past week. All of a sudden my left side just went into complete pain. I was up all night long with pain. The next morning I felt better felt a little weak. I’m continuing to get better each day. I’ve never had a fever, I had that pain in my left side in the lower abdomen, and when I would lay in bed on my left side, it would hurt. I called my little brother that had just recently had surgery four months ago. He said those are the exact same symptoms that I had. He dealt with it for 20 years.! Thank you for making this video!

I am three weeks post colon resection surgery after a smoldering diagnosis...resistant to antibiotics. Still have pain in the lowest incision esp when getting out of bed or getting off the sofa. The biggest complaint is the increase in bowel movements...10-16 a day. Not diarrhea, just more movement that is borderline too hard and difficult to move it out. Would love to talk to others who have been through this and have solved it.

@@whales302 it will be a year at the end of Sept since my surgery. The movements have decreased in number but still not gotten back to normal...as in pain when I have a bowel movement that lingers after, smaller and stringy bowel movements with occasional diarrhea. I firmly believe that this is my new normal. They won't tell me how much they removed....maybe they took out more than I thought. Ask for this information!

I just had my conoscopy last April 13, 2022 and the result is I have a diverticulosis and made me scared. I was glad I was able to open this presentation and it had eased my mind. It was very educational and how I wish I can meet Dr. Chide in person. Thank you very much for this presentation.
