Fly Fishing Blacks Fork in Utah's Unita Mountains

The Blacks Fork River is a 175 mile long tributary of the Green River. It is formed in Utah's Unita Mountains by the confluence of the West, East and Middle Forks. After flowing north for 3 miles it enters Meeks Cabin Reservoir where it then crosses into Wyoming. This 3 mile section is shown here. A national forest road follows the Blacks Fork but you will need to hike a bit through the forest to get to the stream as there are no bridge crossings. The Blacks Fork is one of the larger streams in the Unita Mountains and can produce some large fish. I also thought the stream was very scenic. Most people only fish the East and West Forks, leaving this main fork with little pressure. Most of the trout in the Blacks Fork are cutthroat with a few brook trout. Some mountain whitefish are also present.

Very Scenic! Would you recommend Summer or Fall for this river?

That's difficult to say. The weather fluctuates a lot in that area. The USFS campgrounds start closing down by Labor Day and snow storms become a possibility by then.
