Ahhh Maud Grimes. This is a character I really like and definitely a great addition to the show. Her first scenes had me howling with laughter. "A pillock's always a pillock". She could see right through Reg and ultimately had Maureen's best interests at heart. She goes on to be quite a dynamic personality. Absolute kudos to Elizabeth Bradley.

Ive never laughed so much for ages Denise Osborne is also a brill addition, an Elsie antedote Still liking Doug, they should have developed his character more I actually like little Angie & think they should have exaggerated her part, more outrageous fashions on her & being more quirky Still liking Reet, Brilliant Bett my heroine, Mave & Dekka, Jack & Vee, Curly Wurly, dear old Percy The staples.. I always felt Denise Osborne was a great addition to Corrie, even though she turned out a bit odd. Certainly she was a flirt, but she seemed to have a bizarre "I want you / no I don't, go away" attitude towards men in general. Perhaps she was just commitmentphobic. Actually, she seemed to be a replacement Elsie Tanner.

Reg or Derek? In the Pomposity Stakes who would be the winner of the Cringeworthy Cup? They do have similar form. Both are big-headed; both have a sing-song method of speech and a rather Shakespearean turn of phrase; both have unhappy past marriages to domineering women; and both have a tendency to high dudgeon. But I think the clincher would be down to boldness. Reg was crass and brash and about as subtle as a court jester, whereas Derek had a timid, Mavis-like nervousness beneath all the bluster, and often felt ashamed of himself. Shame and embarrassment didn't seem to exist for Reg. So would that make Reg the winner? Perhaps - by a head. A big head.

You're kidding, right? There are too many examples of her deplorable character to list. So let's just go with a few: 1. Trying to bully the witnesses to lie about Lisa's accident, thereby destroying an innocent man's life and that of his family .... just so Vera can get $$$ for Tommy (whose overall interests would be much better served by living with Lisa's parents). 2. Perpetually stealing from others without regard or accountability and bullying them in the process - stealing Emily's car and the mess with the police; stealing babysitting services from Sally. 3. Publicly screaming at anyone who disagrees with her and hurling false and vicious accusations with impunity.

Even though Vera is being particularly spiteful to Des, I do think she's got a point...if Des hadn't visited Lisa in Blackpool and bought her and the baby back to Coronation street, she would have still been alive. And it's bang out of order for Des to be larking around with his mates just outside Vera's house. I'd have belted him too. Mind you, I'd have belted him the minute he moved in. I've always hated him.

They were walking down a public street and hardly "larking around".

Same could be said for Vera had she not driven Lisa out of her home with her mithering & into Des’ she would not have been crossing the road in the 1st place.

By that reasoning you'd have to trace the blame game right back to any number of random events.... if Lisa had never met Terry... if Terry hadn't committed GBH and been imprisoned.... if Vera hadn't treated Lisa so odiously that she'd sought comfort elsewhere.... You see how problematic it is to make your argument?

I'm trying hard to enjoy these old Corries.... but it is hard.... Percy Sugden is just not a real character, and the same goes for Vera Duckworth... they just don't exist, the writers are pathetic... Still... it is better than Crossroads... ;)

@@theresapierce3934 I don't have a TV so have seen nothing of todays version of corrie, I am only watching this old stuff because I'm a housebound crippled old man who remembers these old ones... but I am still shocked as to how out of touch corrie was back then... but I do like your comment :)

If I may say, I think that you're wrong on two fronts & the characters you single out as 'not real' seem an odd choice, as you could've picked anyone but heigh-ho. The fact is that they most definitely are real & did/ do exist, I've known many extraordinary characters like this, I might even be one myself, so larger than life people are out there without question. Secondly, some viewers oft ask for more reality, or less panto, it's then very easy to point out that were the TV screen full of 'real people' no one would watch! Your 'pathetic' writers barb would be more well aimed at modern shows, at least the writers of this period weren't ramming identity politics & the like down the viewers throats, now that's definitely NOT entertainment.
