As someone that owns a 991.2 GT3 Touring, a 718 Spyder manual and a 991.2 manual GTS cabriolet I can tell you that you can have a great deal of fun in a car that costs much much less. Which is evidenced by my recent purchase of a soft top manual Miata. My advice is to buy new what you can afford and sleep better without worrying about reliability and repair costs.

Yes! If I could afford a brand new Cayman, there would be one in my driveway. I can afford a brand new GR 86 and there is one in my driveway. 😊

@@t7489 Yes I’m blessed financially after getting a terminal degree in my field of study and going from poverty to running my own business for over 30 years.BUT that is beside the point. The point is you don’t have to have a lot of money to drive a great fun car. The key is to be financially responsible to yourself so that you can really enjoy it stress free. The Miata is great and many can afford it or an 86, or a BRZ etc.

I've owned a 987 S and I have a GR86 now, much happier in the GR compared to the Porsche. One of the key points was said "the 86 is like an excited puppy and the cayman is more serious". That seriousness actually gets kind of boring and sterile in daily life, whereas the 86 is a treat no matter what I'm doing. The cayman is a phenomenal car but the engine is the only selling point over the GR. The GR is lighter and feels lighter, amazing looks, cheaper maintenance and still under warranty, more features, better seats (big deal for me), and just as thrilling in a performance driving situation. I love both but the GR was the right move.

Same issue for me. Had a 986 boxster in very nice condition, switched to a miata. These cars are just more exciting. Porsches are nice if comfort is equally as important to you as other reasons for buying a sports car.

Years back I was faced with the decision of a new 2013 BRZ/FR-S or a used 2006 Cayman S (987.1) with ~60k mi. At the time the Cayman spoke more to me and I was elated to own my first Porsche. I agree with the reviewers in that the Cayman is unmatched in feel and refinement, and there is nothing better than the sound of that flat-six. The Cayman attracted attention everywhere I drove it, and was one of the most confidence inspiring platforms when driven at the limit. About 8k miles into my ownership experience I experienced the need for a new clutch and flywheel, which set me back $4k at my local Porsche dealer. After this I was hesitant to drive the car as much, and wondered if the BRZ/FR-S would have been a better overall ownership experience. With the improvements to the new GR86 I think it is easily the more sensible option, and a platform most buyers can drive mercilessly for many miles without much financial risk. At the end of the day however, sportscar ownership is more about feelings than sensibility. You have to choose whichever option speaks to you the most and accept whatever that option brings. While I still reminisce about everything I loved about the Cayman, I currently own and enjoy a 2001 Corvette Z06 (C5). The performance per dollar is unrivaled in this market if you are attracted to the styling and can overlook the 90's GM refinement (or lack there of).

Very good point, but also remember that a 10year old or older Porsche sports car will almost not depreciate while the brand new car will be looking at 50% value in a few years. So it might cost more while you own it, you will recoup some loss at the sale of the car, unlike the brand new gr86 for example.

I drove a '12 BRZ for 10 years, including track days. Nothing ever went wrong in the car, maintenence was relatively cheap. However, I could not extract a passionate engine note out of it, even with aftermarket parts. In that sense, the 'flat-six' remains a class of its own.

After one visit to a Porsche dealer with my 987, I found a local no-nonsense European car specialist who did a brake job with OEM parts for < 50% of the dealer's price and never looked back.

I went through the same back in 2012. I ended up with the BRZ as it seemed more playful and more exciting to drive. It's even more exciting since I put a twin screw supercharger on it and sounds much better than most cars on the road as well.

Stock Caymans on track absolutely need higher temp brake fluid like Motul RBF 600. Makes all the difference. I absolutely love my 2008 Cayman S. Have owned it 10 years now, no plans on selling it. Still brings me lot's of joy and excitement. Been very reliable too!

I tracked my daily '09 Cayman S (owned 3 years now). I went with the high temp brake fluid beforehand. Eight 20 minute sessions, zero issues.

@@footballvision1504 Corners. Tight 90 degrees in town, sweeping onramps, tight clover leaf offramps, nothing corners like a Cayman S. Well, a Lotus does, but I wouldn't daily a Lotus, too harsh and unreliable.

These were the 2 cars I was choosing from. I decided that the "peace of mind" of a new car, plus the relative ease/cheapness of serviceability of the GR86 was worth something. Plus, I was tired of being a keyboard warrior who constantly complained that manufacturers don't make new, manual sports cars. I decided to put my money where my mouth is. Edit: note that the actual characteristics of the car didn't play into this decision at all. I was already convinced that I wouldn't regret either

Except to match Porker's limits the 86 needs that 10k of parts to make up power and handling being at best a 20k factory car, whereas Cayman is that next tier fully proper.

With a new car you don't just get peace of mind, you also get to lose 30% in the first 3 years of ownership from depreciation. That cost alone is more than you'd spend on the Porsche in 6-10 years of ownership. It is also very likely that you will sell the Porsche for nearly the same you paid for it because it's at the end of its depreciation curve.

Cayman is a well made car. Not to mention it is reliable, and easy to DIY maintain. Each time when I am under my 987.2 when its on my quick jack to do the oil change, I was happy to see the amount of engineering went into the design and manufacturing of each component. In my 11 years of ownership since new, it still put a grin on my face each time when I am driving it and it drives like the first day I got it. In my younger days, I drove it more aggressively and really enjoy the perfect rotational inertia of the car.

Sure the 86 may be cheaper to maintain (sometimes) but Porsches are just truly unrivaled in the driving department. I bought an old 944 that hadn't been started in about a year, had blown suspension bushings all around, a front sway bar that was disconnected, an exhaust leak, and a cam tower leak that billowed smoke, and it STILL got me home. They need maintenance but so does every other car on the road. Treat your Porsche well and it makes life worth living

The Cayman Its definitely more reliable than the 86 with all those recalls abd issues. The 86 has more than 6 recalls and 56 (YES 56) TSB in only ONE year.. From engine failure, Transmission, Oil starvation, bad electronics, interior, exterior paint... You cant even modify it to fix Subaru screw up because you lose the warranty...

Nice guys! I was in this exact predicament earlier this year.. Had a refundable $500 deposit on a GR86 at my local Toyota dealer (they only sell for MSRP), but was like 3rd in line for one.. Stumbled across a 987.1 Cayman S for low $30's on Craiglist (wait before you chastise).. Turns out a highly reputable local Porsche/Audi/BMW/MB shop was selling it for a long time customer (he's retired and was travelling the world).. Had the last 8 years of service records and the clutch/flywheel, rotors, plugs, and tires were all done in the last month. It had 78k miles on it when I bought it (84k now) and has been one of the best cars I've owned thus far.. Took it to a PCA track day, no issues.. If you can find one of these gems that has good documentation (or passes a stringent PPI) just buy it.. While the GR86 is good, it can't compete with how much more power/torque the CS has, mid-engine layout, and the sound of the flat 6.. This is the first car that I haven't modded the exhaust on because the intake noise is soooooo goood..

I will own both. Have a 981 boxster s and a 2022 civic si…..eventually I’ll sell the civic and get a brz. Problem with a gen 1 cayman is cost of ownership. I just spent $62 on an oil change at a Honda dealership for my civic. I pay over $200 for the boxster at an independent (my dealer wants more than $500!)

I too have been trying to decide between these same two cars for the past year. From a financial perspective of course its almost always smarter to buy a high quality ten-year old car then it is a new car. The older car has already depreciated about as much as it ever will while the new car might be worth less than half what you paid for it in 5 or 10 years. And this is why I always buy used cars. I bought my 3rd gen RX-7 for $14,000 back in 2000 and just sold it for $35,000 so it was a wise investment. The problem with the GR86 is that its only two years old and people are paying more than MSRP on them so even the used ones are very expensive. And nobody wants to buy the regular 86 now that there is a new one with a much better engine. The other problem is that its virtually impossible to find a used FRS/86 that has not been modified or abused by some juvenile idiot past owner. So that only leaves the option of buying new and I just hate to buy new and take the loss on depreciation - although the Porsche will obviously cost more in maintenance. I have actually always done all my own repairs and maintenance in the past but now I’m getting to the point where I no longer like to do the major repairs myself so the Porsche could prove to be very expensive to own.

Great comparison! I had the exact same dilemma about a year ago, and ended up with my 987.1. I don't regret my decision one bit and have had an absolute blast with it. These first gen Caymans are such good little cars, and it's great to see that there are new options like the GR86 that capture a similar level of magic.

The maintenance for the Cayman is much less than the depreciation the newer 86 will have. You will spend 10k on mods to compete with a cayman on a track and it will still be slower and much less comfortable.

@@andrewrossnagel9433 That‘s interesting. How would you explain that new (not registered) GR86 are sold with an uplift of 10k+, then? I get your point - bit you might want to have a look at prices for a GR yaris as well: After 3 years, they are well above the RRP in 2020. So, at thw moment, I woudn‘t see any depreciation at all. The GR86 is a car thats produced in VERY small numbers - I feel that prices will not fall.

Gr86s aren't produced in small numbers. They're produced at the rate Toyota believes they will sell. As they aren't limited edition. It's simple supply and demand.

Thank you guys for taking on the question that so many of us struggle with, especially with these two models. More expensive cars are often more fun than the affordable competitor but with increased costs there’s diminishing returns. It’s hard to know if I save up and buy the more expensive car if I will actually enjoy it enough to justify the delta over the entry level car. Keep this type of content coming!

that gr will never be a cayman, one is front engine rwd while the other is mid engine rwd. you can't change physics.

An interesting comparison. Maintenance will cost much more on the Cayman, but it's near the bottom of it's depreciation curve. The 86 value retention is yet to be seen, but it is still in warranty. I envy anyone who has to wrestle with this decision.

I can't speak to the GR86 or the older 987 Cayman driven in the video, but I've owned a 982 718 Cayman for nearly a year now and it's spectacular. Miles = Smiles!

I plan on driving very hard, and breaking things. Within 2-3 years, I don't think there will be any comparison in the repair costs of the 987 vs the GR86. So I went with the GR86.

Might as well look at a 230i Supra and Nissan Z too. They’re less money than a Cayman and great cars … more affordable than Cayman. New sports car with a warranty is piece of mind.

I had the great pleasure to drive both of these cars, these very cars, a couple of days before they filmed this while on their Utah Adventure. Paul and Todd know how to host a driving weekend. It’s really about what you want, but I’m with Todd. I found the GR86 to be light, agile and fun. Not quite as balanced as the Cayman S, but a lighter clutch, steering, shifter, and car overall. As Paul said, it’s playful. The 987S Cayman was FUN! Confidence inspiring, stable and grips, the car takes a back seat and lets you enjoy the drive. Back to back with the GR86 it felt heavy though.

I originally wanted a 987 Cayman but started watching reviews of the 981 which is a fair chunk of change more. I then realized the Boxster was introduced a year earlier and after driving a 2013 Boxster S I was hooked. The car is much stiffer, is lighter, makes more power (315 stock) and weighs 66 pounds less than its predecessor the 987. The interior is a major upgrade from the 987. With just a tune and K&N filters mine now makes Cayman GTS power - 340hp. 270 lbft is plenty for a 3000 lb car as I’ve lightened it 50 lbs with an exhaust and lithium battery and taking the gear out of the frunk. Mine had a few miles so was only 43,000, and to me worth far more. The car is built on the same assembly line as the 911 and has many of the same parts. It’s built to the same standard but costs half as much. I will NEVER sell this car. The turn in, brakes and handling are unreal. It’s more than fast enough for the street - 0-60 4.3/12.4 qtr (PDK) and still gets 30+ mpg on the highway. Yearly maintenance with a Quick Jack is an easy afternoon job. The drive axles and cam chain are lifetime components. Beg borrow or steal to get one, there really is no substitute.

About 10 years ago you guys did a special on (Paul's) black Cayman S. That video inspired me to save up for a 981 Cayman which was just announced. I bought that car used in 2018 and haven't looked back. Best decision I've ever made and a LOT of credit goes to you guys, who showed me that Caymans were a diamond in the rough situation because no one wants them yet they are the best car Porsche makes.

Great review! Someone once wise told me (on the good old reddit), get what you can afford and what you like (no matter what). Get a car for you not for others. I was 16 when the Cayman S was introduced. 17 years later and the 987.2 S is still my dream car. I am currently planning to buy a GR86 in 2024. My heart tells me to get the Cayman S but my brain tells me to get the GR86.

Bought a 2006 60k miles Cayman S in 2010 for 26K $usd. Best car ever. Mid engine rwd 6MT will all the options. Only reason I got rid of it is because I got an r8 2012 later. Still miss the Cayman. Best sports car ever

Many years ago I lived on the central coast in California where there are tons of back roads. I had a 94 Miata and a Cayman came up behind me. In the twisties we were matched, obviously on the straights it flew past me, but I was able to catch up through the corners. One of my favorite car moments. I now own a 2018 BRZ and I get that same kind of feeling driving it as I did with that Miata.

I was considering these. Older, used ones. The Porsche scared me off with repair and maintenance costs. The brz/gr I felt wouldn't be enough power. I went with a 370z. No regrets. I love driving it. I'm sure I would be happy with any of them but I feel that the reliability and manageable repair bills of the nissan engine will give me a little peace of mind. Great video

I'd go the 86. I hate the long gearing that often plagues Porsche's. The 86 is going to be more fun at or near regular road speeds. You could own and operate one without a second thought and that's worth a lot.

Own a '22 BRZ and drove a base 981 recently. I would say all things being equal, BRZ>Cayman, but Cayman S>BRZ. Also just a side note, I wish journalists would mentioned that the GR86/BRZ's power number is underrated from the factory. It's really closer to 250hp than 228hp. Dozen's of customer dynos will prove that.

Dynos are tuning tools. Measuring HP to compare against another dyno is amateur hour. If someone is using dyno to bench race they are typically not knowledgeable about building real world performance. Even the same dyno will have inconsistency from one day to the next, so comparing with a completely different dyno on a different day is completely invalid. End of the day, use the dyno to help tune, but power matters where the tires meet the road: 1/4 time and lap times. You’re either faster or you’re not.

Tires, driver, weather, tarmac, transmission stoutness, clutch wear, the car itself--all are all variables that make 1/4 mile times super suspect. Not to mention that no one in the real world is really achieving the most optimal times bc dumping clutches will blow up your car after repeated use. Why would you think the 1/4 mile is a good indicator?

@@joeracer302 Dyno's are power measuring tools, not a tuning tool. It just so happens that the goal of tuning is to make more power, and therefore measuring power is important in that pursuit. People dyno stock cars, and many people have dyno'd their stock 22+ 86/BRZs across multiple different dynos on multiple different days, and have consistently put down around 210WHP, which with standard drivetrain loss of 15% puts these cars at ~240HP at the crank, vs the 228HP claimed by Toyota/Subaru

@@jeremiahviera6914 Very good so far! The only big thing I did was the purely preventative was the PDK service. I did an oil change and spark plugs myself (both extremely easy) and that's it!

Really great episode, guys! Me, personally, I'd probably go for the GR86, but that's simply based on the fact that I don't like the idea of buying used cars, especially a used sports car where I really have to worry about how the previous owner(s) treated it. Just kind of OCD like that, and I'll willingly pay the increased cost for a new car over a used one (even though it means there's a lot of cars I'll never get to experience being that they're out of my budget new).

I traded my low mileage Cayman s 6 speed for a 22 BRZ . Couldn't be happier. Mainly because of the maintenance fears .. I thoroughly flog my cars and the BRZ make me smile with the traction control off and on actually .. .. A point that I feel was missed is rainy day traction control on Cayman will let you throw it out just a bit more BRZ seams to step in a little sooner. ... There is a spot in the Cayman under snap back the front end pushes were the BRZ is a joy drifting just can't stop smiling .. under 6000 miles so far and should probably put a 3rd set of rear tires on ...

Great comparison/video! I was making a similar decision recently myself (GR86 vs. higher end used car) and went with the used car. While I love the car I went with, I think its worth noting that there will probably be a fair amount of deferred maintenance to deal with on any used car. Especially if you intend to track it or drive it hard. While I love the car I picked its hard not to dwell on the price of all new fluids, full detail, other small issues, and tires that the car needed right away. I hate to admit it, but I probably would have been better to hold out for a used GR86 with low miles (lots of those available).

I looked half last winter for a Cayman S manual Transmission for reasonable money..ideally a 2011or 12. Didn't find one. Then I thought to myself, a BRZ in my urban environment, stored outdours with a 7 year extended warranty might be a better fit....for a lot less money. I am very plesed with the BRZ. It is fun. I am not racing anybody, just looking for an engaging car to drive. Best bang for the buck fun car I can think of. In Canada MSRP for the base model is $22,500 USD. I have my winter tires, got it rust proofed, gave it a coat of wax bought some Tuxmats...I am all set. I don't ever have to deal with a Porsche maintenance receipt or worse a Porsche dealer service dept.....How much for that thermostat?? I won't be judged by the envious stranger getting in and out of it. I do love the Cayman though. Beautiful design. I just don't want to take care of one in the environment I live in. Liberating to not have a precious material object.

Great comparison. When I replaced my ND Miata, I wasn’t considering the GR86 (new one wasn’t out yet anyway), but I would have considered the Toyota Supra. Thankfully, the lack of a manual (at the time) nixed that, and I found a Cayman R for the same price (just before the market went nuts). I absolutely love the Cayman R for all the reasons you noted and more (lighter weight, more power, upgraded brakes). If you were to compare a Cayman R with proper upgrades and a manual Supra, I believe the outcome would be very similar to this comparo. Both great cars, but the Cayman R is special.

@@BedroomBeethovens I loved my ND - autox, track days, daily driver - every drive was just pure fun, and I do miss top-down driving. When I first got my Cayman R, it seemed almost like more of a "production" to take it out as a daily, just because it didn't feel like a toy. However, I've now gotten used to it, but the ND is still more "playful" for a short drive. All that being said, absolutely no regrets on the change. I'm not sure the Cayman is any faster around corners, but it's certainly faster accelerating and cut 4-7 seconds off my lap times (depending on circuit).Steering feel is even better (hydraulic on 987), clutch is definitely heavier, shifter feels more mechanical (which I love), and way more storage between the frunk and under the hatch. Bottom line is that you likely won't regret getting the Porsche. One more thing, the maintenance, tires, brakes, etc. are all about 50% more expensive . . . but that is expected!

The answer to the question, which car do you choose "excluding costs" I would say is dependent on where you live. Here in torque country "switzerland" where we have some of the most impressive and famous mountain passes in the world connecting us to germany, italy, and france via the alps. We do not have alot of straight roads, you live in the low gear high rpm speed range of around 30Kmh to 100Kmh. Tried and tested with in my circle of petrol heads, the GR86 comes out ahead of the Cayman S, infact the Cayman has troubles keeping up with a Fiesta STx MK8.5 and a Mazda MX5 ND RF. It seems that by the time the car gets to the speed and rpm to change gear, it needs to break for the next corner.

It says something about both. I actually thought the GR was going to be a clear winner! So bravo Porsche in that case for creating a lasting car in the 987!

I had a 2007 base model Cayman back in 2016 that I picked up for $18k with 54k miles ln it. It had most of its major maintenance done before I bought it and it was a super fun car while I had it. I do miss it sometimes.

When it came out, I really wanted a GT86/BRZ but my budget wouldn't reach. In the end I found a Porsche 968. TBH I think the torque of the 968 is what makes it a good choice and for a 30 year old, it feels old school but modern enough. Having said that, I'd love a Cayman (even though the 968 is way more practical space wise)

Paul hit it…..the 86 feels like a puppy and the cayman feels more serious. That’s why owning both is wonderful….the tonal difference is enjoyable to experience back to back. Had a 2017 brz and a 2013 boxster s. The former was swapped for a 2022 civic si. I will get another brz and own them both!

My vote goes with the Cayman, more old school, mechanical. Though perhaps a base model would have been a more fair comparison on the power side. Nonetheless, I think the design of these two drivers cars is just great. The 987 ages very well. In think the 86 will also. Keep these excellent reviews coming.

KPC on the 2022's makes a difference! Like a double-power rear LSD. Do exit some tighter corners with it. I think it adds to the smiles-per-hour factor of the ND2.

Go with the Cayman S. Get a Wavetrac LSD and you'll be in heaven. The LSD will help even more when it comes to cornering. I have one...I've put a lot into it. Over 40k. A lot of GT3 parts including a GT3 break master cylinder. It brings the break paddle a bit closer to your foot as well. Heal and toe becomes even easier. I also have stainless steel break lines. Suspension wise;I have a full JRZ coilovers set up with GT3 control arms and much more other stuff. One last thing I'll add..it has a tune from E.V.M.S basically adds the feel of a sport plus button. Mine has the sport button,but tune gives it that little bit of extra. Adds power to 309hp as well. There is a higher probability that you will lose money on the GR86 because it's a new car. Just like everything was high in price couple years ago...for the next couple of years to come things will continue to go down. I have a 986S as well. I'm not biased Porsche is just better. Even the 986S is better in every way than the GR86. I worked for Toyota and I also worked at a joint Ferrari Maserati and Lamborghini dealership. Modern classics are the best drivers cars. Best of luck...Porsche all the way. Best cars in the World.

As a former 2006 Porsche Cayman S owner, in 2014 I can assure you it's daunting. Clutch $3500, Computer $4000, metal shavings in the engine with check engine light $11000. That was in the four months I owned it. It had 61000 miles. Again... those were 2014 prices. Expect 30-40% higher now... 10 years later.

I have a 987.1 S that I daily. It's a super fun car, lacks a lot of low end torque, but makes up for it when you're up in the rev range. That GR86 looks really fun as well, as a modern rendition of a purist car - it ticks off the boxes.

Funny enough, I cross-shopped a (used) Cayman and a brand-new BRZ when the BRZ was launched. I was lucky enough that an acquaintance won whichever lottery Subaru had back then and had one of the first pre-release BRZs delivered to the east coast. We met up and traded vehicles, drove each other's cars around for a while. Later on, I invited him to attend a track day at Summit Point, one of his first if I recall correctly. There was absolutely no comparing the level of interior, luxury, ride quality, power, or performance of the two. The Cayman slayed the BRZ in every way. Now, over a decade later, the Cayman has been gone for years and I've had with a 2017 BRZ as my weekend + track car for the past several years.

I had this debate in 2013 and bought a New BRZ. Came back to cayman in 2020 and now have a 718S. No complaints here.

So I have a 987 Cayman S and love it, but I am impressed with the new 86. I did a run up 129 with a new 86 driven by a photographer and I was hard pressed to keep up. Keep in mind I frequent twisty roads and few can keep pace with me, but still the photographer that drives the road daily was better. So I think the Cayman is likely a little faster, drivers equal, but the 86 is a new car with a warranty, so objectively probably the better option for the same money. Side note: the IMS or Bore Scoring (more common on 987.1's than IMS) are not typically an issue on tracked cars. The consensus is they are an issue on cars that *aren't* ever run hard, and are warmed up too slowly.

Bore scoring is not an issue on flat six below 3.4 litres, and now there is a lot of suspicion re engine in cold climates that were sitting warming up for a few minutes vs driven immediately

I blew my 191k mile 996 motor up on track due to a bore scoring. It D chunked two cylinders, on per bank, threw a rod in a third cylinder, and it cracked the block. The car saw a lot of track time. Bore scoring doesn’t care about Miles or how the car was driven. It happens because of an insufficient cylinder wall and piston skirt coating material that wears out and if not caught in time blows up in spectacular fashion. Mine actually blew up while chasing Paul in his GTA S and this owner chasing me last year. This owner caught the failure on video. Looked like a James Bond smokescreen!

Perfect video. I’d contemplated ordering a GR86 but due to work missed the chance as they sold out in 🇬🇧 within something like 90 minutes. I have a base Cayman 2.9 gen2, fantastic car for the road, so not too upset at missing out on the Toyota. Cayman just needs CarPlay installation and I can’t think of any reason to change it until I can afford a 718 GTS 4.0 😋

I own a 22 gr86 Neptune blue and I have driven the 981 cayman gts on track and a 718 cayman on a backroad. I bought the gr86 because it’s what I can afford right now, however if prices come down I will get a 981.

I can transport two (2) Siberian Huskies in the back of the BRZ with the rear seats folded down. Doesn't seem like an option with the 987 Cayman. Other than the small hatch, they did a good job with the back of the 86/BRZ. ToyoBuru marketing always mentions "you can carry a set of race tires with the rear seats folded down" lol

Now that tuning is unlocked for GR86, a catless header on the stock exhaust is something to consider. Counterspace did a recent tune with a JDL 4-2-1 and picked up around 25whp and 40trq over OEM.

You are kidding taking cats out of a 4 cylinder and managed to get 40ft/lbs of torque to the ground? Or are you comparing the flywheel numbers to dyno numbers of the tune after taking cats out because if you are that is very misleading as on a dyno for a stock gr86 as advertised 228 hp 184 TQ it should take 15-18% drive train loss so I'm ballparking here it should be around 175hp and 145 TQ for being stock . What were the dyno numbers of that company's header set up

I got a 22’ brz, absolutely zero regrets. Coming from a bmw 135i with double the power and suspension mods. This car still handles better and is more fun to drive. Only thing I really miss is the torque and the sound. But am planning to supercharge asap. You can’t go wrong with this one, and no more German maintenance costs

And if everything goes well and I'm done in 2 years I won't be able to save enough to get a "new" 86 by 2035 where Germany will decide to stop selling new ICE's. Without having to do some behind the scenes money borrowing from people that is. German maintainance costs is horrible, especially if you live in Germany. Even Japanese stuff costs a shitton.

When I was first looking into purchasing my first sports car, Everyday Driver's series on their hot lava FRS was what convinced me to purchase my FRS. Now looking for something different, this may end up convincing me to purchase a Cayman lol

I think the main thing that would sway me away from a cayman S is how much of it can I work on myself at home? If I can’t do maintenance and other simple repairs at home without issue, the Porsche is a hard pass. I know the cayman S may be better in many ways, but the ability to build and tune the BRZ the way i want sounds like a better experience. Especially when the end game will be better than the cayman in every way 😅

I own a 2006 Cayman S and I find it shockingly easy to work on. I wasn't expecting that from a mid engine car, but it's true. So far I've changed the AOS, starter, plugs and coils. Changed engine and cabin air filters and completed a few oil changes. Replaced my HVAC buttons and shift cables.

I had an MR2 and I loved it. I've got a BMW Z4 E85 2.5si and it's amazing. The BMW has quite a bit more power but the MR2 was more fun to drive. There's not a lot in it but the MR2 felt a bit more special. For that reason I'd probably take the Cayman. In all honesty I'd probably take Boxster 3.4s I'm totally willing to accept a bit less cornering stability and scuttle shake for a the open air experience. That's my values, I understand others may differ. Luv and Peace.

I got my used 987.2 cayman S because of you guys 10 years ago. Today the car is worth the exact same amount I paid for it and I still get compliments about the car everywhere I go. Funny thing is that I’m about to get a used Cayenne e-hybrid because of another one of your videos 😂

I really loved this video. You guys inspired me to buy my 987.1 Cayman S (6 speed manual, Sport Chrono, PASM). I've loved every minute of ownership over the last 8 months. It feels like a special occasion every time I drive it. I actually bought a set of the same tires that you guys had (Bridgestone RE71RS). They are definitely overkill for the street, but tons of fun at autocross. I have them in a pretty huge size, 255/35/19 front and 285/35/19 on some forged Apex wheels. I recently did some brake maintenance and they feel amazing after fresh high temp fluid, Hawk HPS 5.0 pads, and stainless steel brake lines. Keep it up. I would love it if you guys did a group drive or track day in Washington State. I really need to check out the Ridge after doing a bit more maintenance, and address the oil starvation issues on track (deeper oil pan with baffles).

I was car shopping back in early 2021 and was in the same boat, wondering if I should get an ND or a GT86. On the way home from shopping around I decided to checkout a meteor grey 08 Cayman S, funnily enough it has the same aftermarket led running lights as the one in the video. Long story short I showed up 2 days, picked up the car and have been daily driving it without a regret ever since

Thanks, I’m actually debating this very scenario right now. I think I’m going GR86 when I can find one. One thing you mentioned but didn’t talk about too much was maintenance, but warranty and cost of maintenance are going to be my deciding factor. Plus, I already have a 99 Boxster.😊

Out of all the comparisons this is the one we didn't know we needed, 86 vs old Cayman, they are both so amazing ❤️ And I also agree that unlike a daily car that you have to keep replacing for a newer model for safety and tech, a fun car is basically timeless if kept on good condition 🌚❤️

I’ve seriously considered this exact comparison. Personally expect the maintenance of a Toyota to be cheaper than a 15 year old Porsche so it pushed me towards the new car. In theory.

"Which one is for you?" The revised 987.2 S. Same hydraulic steering but 30 more HP and no more engine issues. And I do my own maintenance, like stainless lines and fresh pads and RBF600 this past Summer.

Ten years ago I bought a 987S in the same color as the one in this video. I watched countless videos, and it was Everyday Driver's feature on it that put me over the edge to buy the thing. It was my daily driver for 6 years, amazing car.

I found about 2 manual caymans under $45k, all other manual Caymans were well into $50k. At that price point 86 is better. You can always get a supercharger for the 86 too and still cost less than some of the better Caymans

I have always liked 911s, but I recently got to drive a selection of Porsches. Having now driven both a boxster and several 911s, I can't imagine being faced with the scenario of buying either a GR86 or a Porsche and not siding with the German. I was actively shopping a GR86 before I bought my accord, but even with that, the Porsche will always win my vote, all other things being equal. It's just an entirely different kind of refined.

@@porkchopexpress6969 I was gonna say! I’d imagine that the GR86/981s Cayman comparison would be far more apples->apples than an Elise -> 981 Boxster. One look at the respective interiors and external dimensions should tell all. The Elise is a essentially a track car, and would be a TERRIBLE DD. Weekend driver at best.

@@wg4476 Right. I never quite understood the Boxster/ cayman love. They must be nice daily’s. I know most people will never get a chance to get in both but there really is no comparison. The Elise, especially supercharged is a weapon. If you get into a boxster s or cayman s after driven a lotus, they will feel like you got into a Toyota Camry. But I’ve never driven a turbo or gt model so I could be missing something.

You covered pros and cons of both vehicles and gave us real seat time experiences that give people great info on decision making when buying similar cars. I currently own and drive a 1995 Porsche 911 (993) cabriolet and have owned and driven similar Toyota, Honda and BMW cars. My decision to buy the Porsche was mostly based on the artful, curved look of the body of the Porsche. It's my fun car that will hold its value more over the years. Yes, it has a much higher cost to repair and maintain but since it's not my daily driver the cost for me is manageable while the experience and look is worth it to me. With that said, if I wanted a fun car that I could drive a bunch of miles with much lower maintenance costs and I didn't care as much about depreciation, then I'd buy the Toyota and I'm sure would love driving it. Age is just a number. I own six cars but I'll tell you my C5 Z06 is just a dream to drive. Has a half cage, coilovers, race seats and rolls on a staggered set of R888R's 1000 smile per mile no question.
