I think the purpose of the scene in Godzilla Minus One where Koichi explains his conflict to Noriko was less about "the audience needs to know what's going on with him" and more about the character needing to open up to someone, but specifically Noriko, who's essentially his life partner at this point. So much media has the toxic masculine idea of men needing to push down their emotions and never have these sort of conversations no matter how bad of a time they're having. I think it's so important that we got to see this major development in their relationship, that he felt comfortable enough with Noriko to allow himself to be weak and open with her. This is also why it feels all the more tragic when we see how he never proposes to her, or even tells her that he loves her.

@kenniron6313
@kenniron6313 3 ай бұрын
Took the idea straight outta my head. It’s purposely a long scene because peoples conflicts are complex and while the audience can infer how he feels about it, Noriko can’t. She doesn’t see the things we do, and it felt like the movie wasn’t focused on giving the audience this summary of things we already know, but rather it was focused on showing a healthy example of opening up. It was a turning point for his character. He no longer has to face these demons alone, and it took him being emotionally vulnerable to get there. I think there’s immense value in the scene that’s enhanced by the filmmakers deciding not to cut too many corners around it and let such a natural (and emotional) exchange play out between the two of them. I wouldn’t say his criticism is completely invalid though, it just all depends on how you look at it and what purpose/information you’re personally extracting from the scene.

I know how this is gonna sound, but I don’t really think Shikishima going into his feelings in explicit dialogue in Godzilla is a matter of “not having subtlety”. I think there’s a place in a narrative for Tell, Don’t Show in a story, and it’s in showing us what the telling does to the characters. Shikishima *needed* to tell his inner turmoils to someone. It’s meaningful that he makes the choice to do so, and we see him do it.
@dog7426
@dog7426 3 ай бұрын
Exactly, plus I think the fact that the movie does show us bits of Shikishima's struggles before he even mentions anything doesn't break the show don't tell rule. We were shown his struggle before he told us. And even when he did, as you mentioned, it was meant to show us a level of growth within him by being more transparent and vulnerable.

Agree wholeheartedly about the lore of John Wick. It's interesting enough, and could be explored in a different project (maybe the Continental series does, haven't watched it). But ultimately John himself doesn't care about the rules, hierarchy and the lore of this world. The rules seemingly do not apply to him, he doesn't care about the implications of breaking these rules, and his solution to every problem is just to shoot people in the face, be it run-off the mill Russian mobster, the mystical Arabic king of the assassins, or whoever Bill Skarsgaard's character was supposed to be in the last part. It's all about stylish characters and amazing action sequences, and this series delivers that aspect completely.

It's funny how when Marcus is talking about Godzilla Minus One, he says that he liked when the character's conflict was internal, and didn't care for the scene when he breaks down to his "girlfriend" and tells her what he's struggling with. For me, that scene was my favorite scene in the entire movie, because sure he's telling us what we've inferred to that point, but seeing him have that meltdown and having Noriko (I believe that's her name) talking him down from his fit was so powerful to me because it endeared me to both characters, especially Noriko, and it made the scene when Godzilla attacks her more impactful for me. Spoilers!!!!!!! If I had any complaints about the film, having her be alive at the end is probably the weakest part just because it detracts from the immense impact her "death scene" had on Shikishima and the audience. That being said, I'm happy that they get to be together, though I question what the heck that infection in her neck is supposed to mean and worries me about how a possible sequel would go tbh. I'm not sure I want her turning into a massive Kaiju monster or something like that.
@daftpizza7837
@daftpizza7837 3 ай бұрын
According to what I read online, the mark or infection at her neck is radiation poisoning, meaning that although she is alive, she is gonna have repercursions, probably cancer or blood poisoning making the ending a bittersweet one and showing that even if Godzilla was defeated at the end, all the damage he done to the city and the protagonist is gonna endure and still be present.

my opinion on godzilla minus one’s subtlety is that it uses its overt messaging to provide a very confident and bold statement about the value of life, it’s very blatant about what it’s about because it really doesn’t want you to miss how important of a message it is. but then again, i don’t know if i’d be complain if the movie was more subtle. i just know the lack of subtlety is a feature and not a bug for me

I think having seen Kung Fu Panda 2 multiple times over the course of my life, I ain't really bothered by the handling of story info because it doesn't really take me out of it to see the characters learn separately as long as it's not painstakingly overbearing. Plus as an audience we don't have the full connective tissue of Po's journey within Shen's narrative until that point anyways so the story glides along just fine in that respect imo. Also you should watch the shorts that came w/ the home releases of the movies! They're called "Secrets of Collection" & they're pretty fun & quick 2D stories for some of the side characters

I absolutely adore the ending of Loki. It is so thematically, character wise, lore wise, perfect. It encapsulates “burdened with glorious purpose” and describes mythological godhood better than anything I’ve ever seen. What makes the incredible powers of Loki incredible is the ability to take on burden. Loki’s magic and tricks are cool and all, but it feels so satisfying after all the frustrations of how weak he feels to then see and come to the same realization. No science, no machine could ever do what he did. It’s through the burden that the purpose becomes glorious. Loki’s strength comes from the burden he chooses. I like to think this describes all mythological gods, that it’s the difference between gods and mortals, the inherent factor of their powers. Essentially the show is about Loki understanding what he is, the real meaning behind his throwaway phrase. The episodes in between don’t always do a very good job serving that greater purpose, and I think the epilogue leaves something to be desired, but man that resolution packs so much meaning behind it. It’s incredibly satisfying when the themes and visuals are so in sync, Loki wearing a more folkish, humble garb and literally pulling reality together, and holding it for every and all time.

I feel like you missed the Point with Kung Fu Panda 2. I dont need to explain to you what dramatic irony is, but on top of that part of what made po's journey so great was that he had to come to terms with his "real" origin and whether or not he should care, since he already has an adoptive father (another one of the great messages). Both villains in 1&2 are great and while Shen in the second movie is not really that skilled as a martial artist than tai lung he represents more of an idealistic obstacle than a pure goal the main characters need to physically overcome. As you said i also think the comedy is more varied in the second one and the heros come up with numerous clever ways to outsmart the Shen. On top of that i felt like Po and Shen are BOTH main characters of this story which was super cool, they dedicate so much time to show the journey he is on.

I can't understate how much I agree with Marcus on the whole "Keanu is not a good actor" thing. I LOVE the person and every time he's in a movie it's good to have him in it. But man, the guy's not good at acting. One of my favourite games is CP77 and Keanu's performance is not good, but that kinda makes it unique in a way? It's not like he's phoning it in, he's giving it his all, just ain't cuttin' mustard you know?

I don’t know what’s funnier: The fact that absolutely no one watched Secret Invasion and The Marvels, or the fact that the MCU’s whole stupid Kang plan was practically ruined by Jonathan Majors getting arrested and found guilty, which Katt Williams made fun of him for. Man, 2023 was not the year for Disney. 😂

@@HellfireComms I don't feel bad for Feige. He's completely lost sight of what made the MCU great, and it's taken near total failure of the franchise for him to wake up and understand that they have to be better than this. The bar is too high now and they have to deliver to a degree I don't think he was prepared for. The failure isn't *all* on him, but him and the leadership of the MCU are responsible for the poor choices.

Literally been sayin this since the finale but I think Loki has one of the best character arcs I’ve ever gotten to experience because it was such a slow burn. Like a decade worth of growth into this amazing person it was so beautiful seeing him walk up and finally get his throne and his true glorious purpose. All the anime I’ve watched. And I’ve never felt like literally proud of a character like that. Like I watched a friend go thru a lot of dark shit and finally come out ok. He’s just smiling at the end. It was beautiful. I feel like Loki is like Zuko a lot in the way that they have some of the most amazing character arcs ever but only some people rlly get to experience it fully. Loki the goat fr. And I Nvr thought I’d be saying that watching hulk manhandle this mf in avengers. But I feel like we lost so much of tht sweet Loki from Thor 1 that was just hurting and wanted to be loved and he started masking it by trying to be the villain cuz at least that way he’d matter. The way the show just exposes his character to his own lies to himself is truly amazing to watch
