When i was like 12 my friends and i walked past a games workshop and because we were assholes, we went in thinking it'd be funny to laugh at the nerds. They guy who owned the shop was super nice, knew we'd never seen this shit before and he had a a selection of like, random miniatures for people to paint. We all painted one and had a tonne of fun. We each biugt a £5 box of little dudes. Painted them at home and went back every weekend for like a month. A couple of us kept going and got super into it. My mum and sister went on holiday and instead of that, my dad and me bought a bunch if stuff like third pyramid rocket ship and a tank andna bunch of dudes. We painted them over a weekend and used a big slab of wood, some green pain, and some newspapaper to make a hilly battle field. And i had a lot of fun. I played a couple battles at the shop. Stopped playing it after a while idk why. But, when i say i have 0 artistic tallent, i mean i can barely draw a passable stick man,. I had loads of fun and this video kinda made me wanna buy some figures and paint them with my fiance for fun

Tip for anyone getting into the hobby: don't buy games workshop's paints, brushes, sprue cutters, ect. GW tools can be twice the price of the exact same or better product elsewhere. Personally, I use Vallejo paints, and you can find paints from other companies which match the color of GW paints, but are cheaper. Also, in my experience, GW paints dry out in the bottle faster.

Contrast paints are a pretty unique product and washes are good. Their terrain paints are mostly a big no (maybe that martian earth stuff), because Vallejo has great terrain material (resin paste with different sized particles) thats much cheaper. I personally use Ammo Mig brushes since my FLGS stocks them and they are like 2-3 bucks for a pretty decent and long lasting brushes. And other types of paints aint that bad, its much easier to follow official guides when names of paints match. Even though I'd mostly recommend focusing on their layer paints, since you can use them both as base and layer (works even better as base paint if you do stuff like zenithal priming), while base paints are way too thick to be used as layering/edge highlighting paints in my experience. Just my 2 cents.

Live in the UK? Live near Nottingham? Go to Warhammer world. That place is the shit. They have good food and around 100 tables fully kitted out. There is also 2 shops and an entire desplay area that will take you around an hour to walk around. I have been on f*cking school trips there, that's how good it is.

Some cost effective alternatives when getting into Warhammer: - 2D Paper miniatures. Just print, cut, and glue, and you're ready to go. - 3D Printed miniatures. Takes an initial investment and requires extra effort, but the result is minis that cost pennies. Plus you get a 3D printer. - If the books are putting you off, consider One Page Rules, with Grimdark Future and Age of Fantasy. It's simple and free, and has stats for just about everything in Warhammer (just with different names). - Also, a great resource for terrain is Wyloch's Armory. Similar to Black Magic Craft, but much easier for beginners, and with a focus on 40k terrain.

If you don't want to spend huge sums on models, check out Reaper Miniature's "Reaper Bones" product line. $2 - $5 for pretty much any figure, barring the really big stuff. The detail / quality won't be nearly as great as GW's, but it's a great way to get painting for cheap. Your biggest expense this route will be paints themselves, and even then just get Red, Yellow, Blue, Black and White and you can mix together any color you need.

@@tequilawhiskey in an Tournament no. You can use other modells to represent things but the usual rule is a modell with at least three paints on them. With friends everything you agree on goes. Thar beeing said, it is way more fun using painted modells.

I still have never played warhammer but you got me watching hundreds of hours of painting tutorials. From squidmar to miniac to midwinter. It took about six months of binging their videos before putting my own paint to mini. Now it’s become an integral bonding experience with my teenager and my girlfriend and I can’t thank you enough. This video has honestly changed my life, and I know that seems dramatic. But as a touring musician that can’t tour right now, this gave me an outlet that I realllllllly needed. Thanks man.

@@saurosthewise7371 You have name an enemy for life! They do have some traits they share with communism, but enough differences that you can't accurately call them that. They resemble Plato's Republic, in a way. A society led by philosopher-kings, where each person is set to work at that in which they will do best. It's also interesting that the Tau's caste system is horizontal, not vertical. There is no hierarchy among the castes. Some would say the Ethereals are above all, but even they see their position as a duty, not a privilege, to be used only to benefit society at large.

FOR THE GREATER GOOD! This video is really great. I’ve been a 40K lurker for 5 years and a Fantasy lurker for even longer. As an unemployed broke 18 year old college student it’s been a real struggle to get into this hobby. I just got my first few models (obviously Tau) and have painted a couple, and I’m not very good but it’s fun. I wish I had friends like yours who are not only into tabletop games, but the kind of narrative campaign I’d love to play. Warhammer is seriously one of the coolest fictional universes ever, up there with Star Wars, Middle Earth, etc.

Hey man I’ve never replied to a KZbin comment before, but I just thought I’d share with you that my dad got into warhammer and he somehow found the time to create the most beautiful models I’ve ever see whilst still raising my brothers and I, working full time, and serving in the NAVY reserves. I honestly have no idea how he did it, but he did, so if you really think you’d enjoy it it’s definitely possible.

You can always use an airbrush if you happen to have one. That can really speed up the painting process once you get used to it. I still paint by hand but am planning to go with airbrushing eventually. Then you just do the fine details by hand with the brush and boom it can be as done as you want. If you're just playing with your kids you don't even need to paint them really. Then you just need to snip them off of the sprews, file down the points that you snipped them, and glue them together.

PRO TIP: Go to half price books or another used bookseller to get the 40k books for around half off! Super easy way to get The Rules and a Codex or two!! @@OmegaAnimech They're still behind gathering storm so they're about 3-5 years behind, although Cawl has been introduced and the primaris project was mentioned, and the eldrad/vect special was setting up the birth of Ynnead, so I imagine in a couple years they will have caught up since the changes in the lore haven't been too huge in a narrative sense.

Warhammer 40K lore is definitely worth being at least marginally versed in, if nothing else so you can see what it looks like when a bunch of talented writers intentionally make something so ridiculously grimdark that it serves as its own parody - but is still kind of awesome.

you should probably avoid fantasy if you want to try age of sigmar or atleast not pursue any creating any army for fantasy as it is 2x expensive both for the miniature and the rulebook and more complicated as fantasy is more "medieval" and "based on history" i.e The Empire -HRE,Kislev-russia,Bretonnia-france etc. needing you to field a wall of halbadiers ,artillery batteries,cavalry group and ranged units than sigmar 4-8 stormcast.

I love the Warhammer 40k universe, I'm gonna nerd out now. I never vibed with Space Marines so was a little hesitant, started off buying the core rulebook, half the 300 page book is lore. After reading that I knew I was going to get sucked in. What I loved about the universe is no race is good, everyone is flawed for one reason or another, but they're all contenders on a galactic scale. My personal favorite are the Tyranids and Tau. The Tyranids are simple creatures but on a Lovecraft scale. They come from between galaxies and no one knows how many they are, hinting that they devour entire galaxies and move on, they morph and evolve in minutes to face threats. There is no motive, no emotion, just an insatiable hunger. The other thing I like is they're the only race that don't use the warp to power their psychic powers, they use the shear force of their hive mind. Tau I also like, they're basically infants in terms of the galactic timeline, but they basically big brain the crap out of their society to super charge technological development. They basically erase individuality for the cause of the common good. If they can't indoctrinate an alien race, they snipe their ass with a rail cannon and move on. What's so great about the 40k universe is no matter how badass something is, there's always something trying to push the badass scale. Tyranids have Lictors that are essentially invisible and ambush their prey, eating their brains through their ears to psychically relay information to the hive mind. Orks basically have walking piles of trash that will eat citadels, just cause. The Grey Knights have a Paladin stuck in the warp fighting demons for all eternity to the point demons are afraid to even go near him. The Sisters of Battle have faith so powerful it gives them a literal invulnerability shield. The game is amazing too and the crazy situations that happen and then coming up with a story for it or coming up with unique models. It is a lot like role playing at times. I had these flying Tyranids with angel wings that I took from a completely different game. Tyranids typically have bat or dragon like wings with the webbed fingers and stuff. I thought it would be really neat if the hive mind learned that angel wings were an important symbolic image for humans, so they morphed this breed of Tyranids with those wings on their monstrous creatures to demoralize the humans. Boy do I miss having people to play with. It's one of those hobbies that if you don't live in the right area or if the group near you aren't cool (The group I visited were really racist and not the most welcoming to LGBT which was problematic for me) it can be really hard to find people to vibe with.
