Bird Box: A monster that respects private property

Actually it's an old trope with demons, vampires etc. You have to invite them in. They don't respect property, they just respect walls. They trespass a lot. 🤗

Daredevil would have a better chance, certainly... But I'm not really sure. If it's as good as it is in the Netflix show (where he actually pretty *clearly* saw Claire way back in Season 1 when he was telling her about himself and we got a quick shot of how he "sees" everything) then it might not help that much? It's anyone's guess, really. Hard to say without knowing the full extent of those things's power to make people kill themselves after they look at them....

His character was actually wrong for most of the movie. Remember he wasn't in his own house, defending his family. He was let into his neighbor's house, who he didn't even like, and then he decided that nobody else was allowed in, even though by that logic he would've been dead before the movie started. His "common sense" was basically him being selfish and getting pissed when other people didn't listen to him.

As soon as I saw "five years earlier" I knew the movie was going to be bad. See, the reason you start a movie at the _beginning_ of the story and not the end is so we _don't_ know what's going to happen. When a movie tells us right off the bat which character's are going to be alive at the end by showing that first, when any other characters are introduced, we instantly know they're going to die. There is no longer any tension, and it becomes a matter of simply waiting for the movie to go through the motions. It becomes even worse once they lock themselves up in the house and we instantly know they're going to follow the _Night of the Living Dead_ formula and we can predict everything that's going to happen pretty much beat-for-beat. I could almost swear anyone who was surprised or scared by this movie has never seen another movie before.

Also it didnt really seem like those monsters were flashy and big cause in a lot of scenes especially in the beginning some people start hallucinating and some dont. For example the sister somehow sees something and sandra bullock doesnt see it. You know what i mean? So i see them more like ghosts and i personally dont believe anyone can even see the monsters. I really liked that the kids have no names, because this shows the distant relationship between their mother. So I don't think that they have to get more depth in character, cause it just fits the whole atmosphere of the movie. BUT you're right other characters could have been more in depth and maybe get more background information. What seemed also very illogical to me is that these demon creatures couldn't go into a house when the door is closed. Like what? These are creatures from another dimension or idk but I don't think that a closed door could have stopped them. Yeah, but all in all I think it's a stable movie, which could have been more short

@CrayZ Cookie Yes they were large, but I'm not quite sure, if their body is physical or you can go through it, you know what I mean. That's why I was confused why they didn't go through the walls

@mjm30915 жыл бұрын
Also about Boy and Girl - when they were in the forest at the end, I was thinking, maybe she didn't also named them, because names are actually pretty strong? They don't have names so like demons can't talk to them using their names - and it is really easier to make someone interested just by using their names. I bet everyone of you always look around when someone says your name in the public. Like when the three of them were in forest - all the monsters, constantly was mocking Sandra Bullock using her name, but children could be only trickee using her voice. Like - they were safe unless they would start to be stupid or that she wasn't around them.

6:47 they have no names because she thinks it's safer it actually also bothered me when she just called them boy and girl, but I gave it some thought and her reasoning might be this: she has auditory hallucinations and/or she regularly hears the entities *using her name*, trying to entice her into looking. This may have started happened early enough in the baby's infancies that she realized she literally can't risk giving them names, as this would be too much psychological ammunition for the entities and put the children at too high a risk.

I disagree. I think the movie was making a commentary on Malorie's lack of desire towards motherhood. Early on in the movie the OB/GYN says, 'You might not feel a bond yet but you will once you hold the baby.' but also offers an adoption catalog, presenting two paths for Malorie to take. She's seriously considering/leaning towards adoption because she doesn't feel any bond with her fetus but then the apocalypse begins and, soon after, she and Tom are the sole caregivers to two infants, neither of which she bonds with -- to the point that she can't bring herself to name them and she actively scares Girl. She isn't willing to let them die in the same way that she isn't willing to abandon the people at the house to live at the grocery store -- because she feels that trade off of self-preservation over all else is morally wrong. She makes that argument multiple times. But that doesn't mean that the feeling of "motherhood" ever actually kicks in and she isn't willing to name the children until (a) they're as safe as they're going to get in this new world, (b) she nearly loses both of them and recognizes she has bonded with them in some way, and (c) there are other people to take up the motherly bond for her. It's a commentary on motherhood, a reflection of her own views of her mother/childhood, and that's reinforced at least six times in the film in various ways. For me, that's probably the coolest thing about the film. You don't see it a lot in movies, especially horror movies with mothers and children.

Idk, but when we learn the kids’ names I kept thinking, “Yea I read “The Road” too.”
@alsopsarchive53845 жыл бұрын
It would have been so much better if they just stuck to the present day segments and developed the relationship between her and the kids so I actually cared when they were in danger. There is way too much unnecessary backstory exposition in the house segments for characters that don’t matter at all.

I can agree. I wasn’t a fan of the idea of inserting flashbacks every twenty minutes or so. I think it would’ve looked more systematized if the movie’s timeline was shown as is. It threw me off every time a scene got cut to show another event that happened in another timeline. It’s like slowly building tension but just as you get to the middle of it, you sink low resulting in the need to start over again. Then, when the supposed time of “climaxing” happens, you’ve only gathered tiny bits for that thrill meter, and it just doesn’t satisfy you. I know that I sounded like I explained something else, but you get what I mean. It would also never really be pulled off. The two timelines showed a) the full household and b) only the woman and the kids. Seeing this, you already know that everyone else in the household besides the three would eventually die or never be heard of again. It ruins the suspense of guessing whether a character lives or ends. In the end, you either exclude the past, or avoid alternating it with the future.
@n0m4nic5 жыл бұрын
Then we would be stuck with the child actors the whole movie. Do you think you can sit through them for a feature length film? Do you think the writer is clever enough to think up material for them they can manage? It would have been better to get rid of the framing and just shoot this movie like a regular story and not give away who is going to live. The only thing it didn't ruin was that Billy Idol and the cop didn't die, they just fucked off into the sunset.
@alsopsarchive53845 жыл бұрын
n0m4nic The only reason I watched the film was because of the cool blindfold forest action hinted at in the trailer. Unfortunately we got stuck in a boring house with cringe characters that are just as bad as the kids. If the focus was on the children from the beginning, they might have actually cast some kids with talent. The Quiet Place is pretty much just better in every way because it understood why people wanted to watch it. Imagine if that film wasted an hour and a half just hanging out with inconsequential side characters and rushing the ending.
@waywardmomma96255 жыл бұрын
You weren't paying attention because the children were a significant part of the story line. Sandra Bullock's character had issues getting close to people emotionally. That is why she wasn't thrilled with the idea of having the baby. That is why she jumped up from the bed when "Dumpling" sat down with her to establish some distance and try to put an end to the conversation. She called the children Boy and Girl because it would create a bond. She didn't want a bond encase they were killed. Then, once they arrived at the sanctuary and were safe she gave them names because the journey had created a bond she was trying to deny, but she eventually accepted it.

The problem with flash backs, especially in suspense/ action movies, is the fact that you know 100% that the main character lives through the flash back (obviously) meaning the only way to pull it off is to not have the flash back try to be suspenseful and just make it emotional or expository (emotional by showing her loved ones and friends die or what ever, or have it give the viewer information about the world we're seeing).
