I bought an A5 Japanese real waygu steak from Sam's Club for $99, pretty much the same thing we see here -- To say I was excited for this was an understatement, but I was absolutely gutted to find out it tasted like crap lol I felt so confused and angry. I cooked it correctly, after watching hours of videos to practice it, I was dead on with the cook but it was rubbery and tasted like chewy gristle with a bacon-beef flavor. I gave the rest to my foodie coworker and he had the same experience. We're still haunted by the expectation-to-reality shock. Only two things that make sense is 1) we were sold fake A5, at a corporate level, or 2) we are both fake foodie wannabes with a crap palate.
@noah762410 ай бұрын
@@jgizzy Not to say that you cooked it incorrectly, but watching videos does not equate to actual skill, so you likely did incorrectly cook it if you have never cooked steak before or just a few times. For instance, watching Michael Jordan play basketball may help your understanding and knowledge of the game, but your skill within it remains just as bad.

@@noah7624Cooking meat is pretty easy and yes watching videos does go a long way. Can't compare cooking vs sports. 1 requires many years of training and natural talent, the other in some circumstances, can be perfectly replicated because the ingredients and the time are the stars of the show, not you. I'm sure he did do it right because I've had Wagyu at a restaurant where obviously the chef knew how to prepare it and I was extremely disappointed with how it tasted vs its cost. It's one of those products where you are simply paying for the namesake, not the quality. Lots of people outside of the realm of youtube will tell you it isn't that great at all, and other cuts of meat are significantly better and cheaper.

@LudiCrust.9 ай бұрын
That’s so true. I was stationed in Japan & experienced it firsthand. Japanese steaks are just so damn good & taste different enough from US steaks that it makes them more desirable to Americans used to eating top of the line US beef. On the flip side they thirst for our top shelf steaks so I can see why they like them so much. The best steak I’ve ever had in my life was at a steak house in Austin Texas when I was visiting family but Japanese steaks are just as good. I’d put Korea at #3 & no other country I’ve been come close to those 3. Obviously Europe has high quality steak but to my tastebuds they lack the richness of the other 3.

So many people in the comments are chiming in about how the steak was cooked incorrectly. Wagyu x5+, cooked medium-rare, should be cooked to about 5 degrees Fahrenheit hotter than a normal steak. It does not need to be salted before cooking due to its extremely high fat content and low moisture content. (In this video it was cooked sous vide so the point is moot anyway.) He seasoned the steak after cooking it. It should be cooked from chilled or frozen, due to the extremely low melting point of the fat. Throwing a room-temperature Wagyu x5+ steak into a hot pan will leave you with a puddle of fat and a dry steak. Most Japanese chefs will cook a Wagyu steak sous vide. It allows for the fat to gently melt and then re-absorb.

@@YoungCorruptionand sous vide does not require vacuum sealed bags. What he did was he used the water displacement method to get rid of the air when he put it in the water. He sealed 80% of the bag, put it in the water, pushed it down to remove the air, and sealed the rest of the zipper. I stopped using a vacuum sealer a long time ago since it's a pita, and the displacement method works just as well, and doesn't over evacuate the air

I would rather have 10 one pound ribeyes when they are on sale for $9.99 a pound than blow $100 on just a single steak with no sides.

I've been to an all you can eat wagyu restaurant. While it taste good, it's not worth it's ridiculous price. I'd also take the 10 ribeyes.

I haven’t had a wagyu steak, but I suspect there is a diminishing rate of return. The best steaks I’ve ever had are the ones I cook for myself and the price is right.

How to ruin a $100 piece of steak in 60 seconds
@jameshardensfatsuit572611 ай бұрын
Yeah, he really tried to make it look extra to milk views. I personally would never sous vide wagyu, let alone put it in a Ziploc bag.
@fang824411 ай бұрын
@@jameshardensfatsuit5726 Lmao. Sou vide is better since 99% of people (most likely including you two) can't cook a perfect medium rare. The steak looks amazing. I don't know how you think he ruined it.
@jameshardensfatsuit572611 ай бұрын
@@fang8244 sous vide isn't done solely for temperature, it's to ensure edge to edge cooking without the risk of losing flavor (which shouldn't be a concern for wagyu, as it's flavorful alone and typically served rare). An instant read thermometer is for ensuring the steak is cooked to temp, such as mid-rare like you suggested. I would recommend other videos, if you think this is "standard."
@fang824410 ай бұрын
@@jameshardensfatsuit5726 No where in your comment did you describe how he ruined it... Also, I didn't say it was done solely for temperature. It prevents people from accidentally over cooking, since the difference between medium rare and medium in terms of cooking time is not a whole lot and varies based on the size and cut of meat. Even with a thermometer people mess it up. With a sous vide, you remove those factors and can guarantee the right doneness and can just focus on seasoning and searing. Also, I've seen a lot of "other videos" and I can't tell you the number of times people have cut open a steak and said "look at this perfect medium rare" when it was clearly over or under-cooked.

@@jameshardensfatsuit5726you didn’t actually answer his question at all. So, I’m going to assume you have no clue what you’re talking about.

You could definitely go with the whole steak. Depending on how much you can eat. But don’t be afraid to eat the whole thing
@penteractgaming7 ай бұрын
Nah... theres A LOT of fat in that steak. I dont think people realize how filling it actually is.
@Bertdanner10207 ай бұрын
@@penteractgaming I’ve eaten plenty of it. I do agree, it all depends on who’s eating it. I eat a lot, and love eating it as a normal American style steak. I lived in Japan for 4 years and would always go to the local butcher to get A5, but I don’t disagree, it is very filling compared to a normal steak.
