The goal of prison should be to make the people in there ready to live in the society again.
@Zoukos23
@Zoukos23 6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Punishing them can be effective sometimes, but honestly, what would be better for everyone is if these people were offered help to re-enter society. If you think about it, our current way of dealing with criminals is kinda inhumane. The worst thing you can do to a human is put them to isolation. And that's exactly what prison does.

If you look at a graph of the prison population in the US there is a sharp increase exactly around the time they privatized prisons and Nixon declared the war on drugs.

Warms my heart to to see that America is starting to see imprisoning as a form of rehabilitation instead of punishment, much like we do I'm many places here in Europe. We have been very successful at keeping criminals from falling back into crime for many decades now. Statistics are fairly clear here, and forces us to ask ourselves: Whats the most important? Punishment or protecting our citizens. Because you cant have it both ways.

What kind of soulless jerk downvotes something like this? Yes, prison is about punishment, but it is also about rehabilitation. If you don't positively affect the way the inmates think, then on release, you have an ex-con who has learnt nothing beyond that if they get caught, they will go to jail: and we all know how bad recidivism is for some people. Anything that makes just one person better when they leave prison has to be a good thing.

Prisons are set up all wrong and prisoners are treated like shit and not everyone sent to prison should even be in there to begin with because our justice system is also shit. In 2010 a judge sentenced a guy (Bernard Noble) to 13 years and 3 months in prison for having two joints on him. He had a daughter and the judge gave him the longest possible sentence that his power allowed him to. In my opinion that judge should lose his job and probably do some time himself for the unnecessary pain he put on someone. In Canada pot will be legal soon, but if a cop catches you with weed all you get is a $200 fine, they don't lock you up and ruin your life and families life over it. If people don't want the treatment in prisons to be better for the people who did real crimes, at least want it better for the people who don't deserve to be there at all, because as far as the prison system is concerned, it doesn't know the difference. I believe in constructive punishment, not punishment for punishment sake with mental torture and causing forced depression and anger though extreme isolation. Norway is doing it right and their prisoners never end up needing to go back.

You come out either a better citizen or a better criminal, without programs to help them become better citizens they will just learn how to commit crime better from other inmates. You will hear months of stories about how people got away or got caught, ontop of drug connections if you wanted to start selling when you get out... Well if you can sniff out who is talking bs or not.

It is an honor to volunteer for this program. There is a well thought out year-long curriculum. Yes it provide valuable skills, yet also provides a very supportive structure to work on what they need to cultivate within themselves to thrive on the outside. It ranges from studying overall systems, to garden skill, tending their emotional landscape, and how to apply this to the work world.

Self-sustaining prisons where the norm for a long time. Prisoners learned traids, and grew their own food until recently. Back then it was done out of neccessity, but for some reason it stopped and prison became a place of punishment and dependance. Obviously there are some people who just can't function in society, but the rest only need that little bit of help to make positive changes and stop the cycle of recidivism.

No body cares about these prisoners. It's very cruel how society abandons, cuts these people off from society. You set a prisoner free and he can not get a job or a home because he can't get past the self incriminating paperwork. With barriers like that its no wonder these guys find there ways back to jail. It's good to see that someone is talking about recidivism because this concept is widely unknown and misunderstood, but gardening in prison surely insn't the cure for this. It doesn't matter what you do in prison if when you get out in society you are still treated as a prisoner but instead without a place to live or eat. I Know some prisoners prefer the comfort of prison to the simi unredeemable disgrace we call post prison life. People are quick to dismiss these people's troubles because "oh he's just a bad guy" "that's just the way she is" "the deserve it" no one deserves a lifetime of pain for a mistake the made. The should actually be able to atone for their sins and start over without defining themselves by their past.

MyUniverseDNA what? LMFAO. What is there to fear. Blind Faith with nothing to back it up is mythology. I don't fear story tales. I'm not a child. Yet you are god fearing. Afraid of what you assume to be true. Yet can never actually know. I believe in the burden of Truth! Not unfounded opinions of prophets. That most likely had sciophrania and would had been committed and proven to be crazy, with a MRI, in this modem age of science. Use some common sense. People made up stories to make sense of it all. Nothing more. When you die, everything ends. Just as it does for bacteria, animals, plants and bugs. Humans evoled from them. Which proves we are no more special than them. (DNA proved evolution by the way. When we unlocked the full human genome) We are just narcissistic and think we do. Then in return made equally narcissistic gods. You can honestly say your religious beliefs make more sense? If so you need to learn critical thought and logical deduction, my friend.....

Some of the most important elements of rehabilitating individuals is education, vocational services, health care (moreover mental health care), and most of all post-release reintegration and assistance services. These things can be done and started while someone is currently incarcerated. There are lots and lots and lots of things that can and do work... but the importance of these elements cannot be understated.

Majority of these men will not leave back into a community where this is viable. Typical of California. They give these men something to do that is a non violent action, and it gives them a productive thing to do. Many other states have been doing this for years. Taking responsibility for their actions is the answer, but our society is making it even harder to do that, because we as a society are constantly giving people reasons to blame someone else. While this concept is not a bad one, we have other avenues that can do a lot better. I speak from over 20 years of first hand experiance.

Gardening actually applies to people who aren't in the criminal category as well. We don't all end up doing criminal things but urban life or living a life of disconnect can lead to losing sight of the true meaning of life which for some people (not everyone) can lead to walking the wrong path in life. Not everyone grows up with access to a garden and increasing that accessibility would do so much good for urban communities. Not everyone is religious but gardening is a way to connect people to nature and sometimes even God without all the indoctrination. Spirituality is a lifelong endeavor for everyone whether you have a criminal past or not.

Ending private prisons and not allowing them to lobby for laws that make it easier to go to prison will help. Not fucking gardening. Going to prison for 20 years on a nonviolent drug charge and spending life for 3 felonies are just two examples. Some prisons have contracts with states that mandate MINIMUM POPULATIONS so when they are below that cops go out of their way to arrest people.

While it's nice they are trying to fix prisoners that have issues, the real problem often as not is the government systems both in and out of jail that push these people back into incarceration. Prisoners should have to be paid the same wages as non prisoners (put it in a trust account till they are free so they can start a life for themselves) and the parole system needs a thorough going over as it often makes it a lot harder for people to start a normal life again.

Dangerous Thinking. The only guarantee the "cycle of prison" will be broken is to remove a defining element/term from the "cycle of prison" and the most artificial term (and thus most practical to target for destruction) in that phrase is "prison". If there is no prison, anyone can sabotage any collective rather freely if the death penalty is also not a thing.

I guess if this rehabilitates them then they should have a second chance, unless they're like serial killers with rage issues or something extreme like that

If the crime doesnt deserve death (And I do believe some do) then rehabilitation should be the main priority

Prison farming, I found the agenda. With thousands of prisoners tending the fields, big farming corporations won't have to pay as much for labor costs.

I remember myself going into a trance when fixing stuff, cleaning the car, designing systems. Pretty much similar to this.

the only problem is most people dont want to hire ex criminals and they end up associating with their old groups who lead them into crime again.

The video is cool, but the ads are weird. I don't know what hooking up with hot girls has to do with gardening in prisons. LOL!

This is really good. Education and prison systems needs important reforms like this they are foundational to out society....now that I've aknowledged it...don't u think it's funny when the inmates talk about how great the prison is it feels like an one of those infomercials where they're trying to sell me some massage chair bullshit

That sounds like a great way to calm down prisoners. What I worry is that they could use those tools to attack other prisoners.

Dally :/ I don't think those things in cutthroat gangs would care about the guards. I do see it being good for those who have good behaviour.

They already get tools to attack other prisoners like shivs so this wouldn't be much worse if anything.
