edjae david Yeah, but a truly elite guard is going to find a way to get where they need to get, hand checking or not. You can’t hand check elite speed/quickness all the way up and down the court. Also, I think people like yourself and Kenny miss this point: as a basketball player, you are a product of the era you play in. So if Steph Curry, for example, played in the 90s, he would have to add a few pounds of muscle to deal with the constant hand checking. He would of course do so, and would have the same impact on the game as he does today. He would still be elite. That’s what irks me about Kenny’s argument! You can’t just pluck a player from his current era of basketball, drop him in another and say, “He wouldn’t be able to make it cause of the hand checking.” It’s totally illogical.

This isn’t necessarily the intent of the hard foul though. In poker sometimes you bluff with bad cards. The whole point is to get to the mental aspect. This video is the 100% truth, especially the part about 95% of the 80's/90's references to the Bad Boy Pistons (about the eras toughness/physicality). I tell people all the time; *If the game was so brutal (league wide), why was the Pistons physicality such a shock to the league? Because the game was soft AF before the Pistons that's why.* They were an exception in the 80's, not the rule. Their style of play wasn't common.

+TyroneNBAFan Exactly. The crazy thing is, the 90s were my favorite era. But it's gotten to the point where I'm almost afraid to identify myself as a 90s fan because I don't want people to think I'm one of those crazy folks who think 90s basketball was players beating each other in the face with chains and bats and that there hasn't been a good player since Jordan retired. That type of nostalgic myth-making gives 90s fans a bad name in my opinion.

TheRiggedBA Same here. 90s was my favorite era also (started watching in 1993) but social media has turned me off to it a bit. I've enjoyed this current era and the 2000s just as much tbh. They're using 90s myths in arguments to degrade "certain" players/teams.
@RoninWaffle7 жыл бұрын
With the preface that this isn't something I get emotional about, let me weigh in... The Pistons were a shock to the league because the Pistons were literally looking to intentionally injure people at the rim. This is something that's been discussed and admitted to by multiple members of the organization since then. Hard fouls were part of the game before then, but not like this. Hard fouls weren't uncommon before Detroit, they were just... less hard. Like I said, guys like Laimbeer and Dumars specifically set out to injure players. Injuries happened as a result of hard fouls, but mostly by accident and much less frequently. I agree that their role in the reputation of their era is overstated sometimes. What's missed in this hard era vs. soft era conversation, somewhat, is the way fouls were actually administered (the way I remember, at least). You look at guys like James Harden now, who really wouldn't have had nearly as much to offer before practically every touch on a ballhandler became a shooting foul. That's the difference. It's not like people were karate chopping each other out of mid-air. And what handchecking did, in my memory, was basically let inferior defenders stay employed. Before Jordan came along as too much of an athlete to hold back with handchecking, it was just enough of a deterrent to keep most guards and wings out of the paint. It couldn't (and didn't) stop a freak athlete if he wanted to get by.

In the 70s the nba was going to shut down because of the number of fights. Rudy tomonavich the coach for the rockets on the 90s almost died on the court getting punched in the face. There was a fight almost every game in the 70s so in fact the nba had to make the game softer to appeal to the “white” fans. Jason Espinal softness and untouchable treatment of superstars started in Jordan's era to allow him and other dunkers to go to the basket at will. its why i dont like the bulls though he was exciting to watch. from then it just got softer and softer. hand checking was hardly called in the 80's. the ones that will have a hard time with "zone" are iso players and those who rely in going to the basket. there are those who could play or exploit today's rules like Bird, McHale, Isiah Thomas, Mullin, Cooper, B. Scott, McAdoo, M. Price, R. Miller to name a few. If players today like Thomas, harden and Westbrook could score 20-50 points in a game what would prevent Jordan from doing so? anyway, both Jordan and Lebron have untouchable and favorable treatment that is very unfair and very annoying. without it Jordan maybe 4-2 in finals and lebron 1-6 or even 0-7

To be fair the dribbling rules were a lot stricter. That’s why the players in the 80s seemed to dribble with their right hand and rarely did you see crossovers or ankle breakers. When the 90s hit the dribbling rules became slightly looser and in the late 90s when Iverson came he really changed the game somewhat. He was carrying the ball like crazy and people thought it was flashy and cool and so it led to these dynamic guards that we know today.
@davidhall44014 жыл бұрын
@@Terror832 absolutely the dribbling rules were a lot stricter years ago. Guys had to keep their hands completely on top of the ball. That was the rule for dribbling back then. It wasn't because they sucked. Plus coaches weren't giving players the freedom to do anything flashy. Also rules in general were so strict at one point that dudes were not allowed to dunk in games for a brief period. I know athleticism has gotten better, but there were dudes with hops back in the day too. Also the style of ball handling we see now with ankle breakers wasn't as foreign to those players as people think. A lot of dudes played street ball back then and when they played on the playground they would let loose. Back in the day the criteria for dudes to make it to the league was different, which is why you used to always hear that the best players were dudes that didn't get the opportunity to play in the league.

I knew that nostalgists were overfocused on hand checking, but I didn't know the full psychological extent of it. I made this video showing that hand checking wasn't allowed in the 80s or 90s. They can literally see hand check fouls being called, but it's like their minds can't process it. They just mentally block out the game film and send me messages with links to quotes and clips of people talking about hand checking instead, and insist that it was legal. And it's always the same clip and cut and pasted quotes. I think I might make a follow-up to this video to address it, just because I'm tired of romanticists always sending me this stuff like it's the first time.

+ makaveli g But the rules are what most old school fanatics lie about to prop the 90s up. In terms of physicality, the 90s were nothing like the tall tales people spin about them today. As far as intensity, that's a different issue and I would agree that it was higher in the past. Players were allowed to show more emotion. But there's no need for such revisionist history. Players didn't bitch in the 90s? Really? C'mon now. That's just a silly thing to say. Of course players bitched in the 90s. All the damn time. Even more than they do today because today you get fined for it. And obviously they flopped in the 90s too. I'm a 90s fan, but that doesn't mean you have to try to romanticize it into something it wasn't. And you don't have to cling to the past by trashing later eras. I personally like the 90s more than current NBA in terms of entertainment, but I wouldn't ignore three decades of sports evolution and act like 90s players were actually *better* and today's players couldn't hang with them. The skill sets and athleticism of today's players are well advanced beyond the 90s players. It's a natural progression.

You do a good job disputing narratives that are constantly being spewed by most fans and analysts. Its funny how a lot these old heads and basketball elitists love spewing their crap about the 80s and 90s defense being tougher when they ignore the fact that their idol michael jordan was the most protected player in nba history. If you look at the stats, teams from the 80s and early 90s have higher FG%, PPG, and Offensive Efficiency compared to the teams of the today which nullifies the nostalgic crap that most old heads spew.

+The Copycat Ninja When I started watching 80s games on KZbin, I was immediately shocked at how porous the defense was and how generally soft the games were called. I was expecting to see a bunch of rugged guys grinding it out in a slugfest, but it was mostly just touch fouls and out of shape players(relative to today) running up and down the court shooting with little resistance. The game scores were astronomical compared to anything I was used to seeing. It was almost like they weren't even trying to stop each other. The players today are amazing but I'll never get used to the outside shot being so dominant. Teams are much deeper today. If you don't know a team, it's tough to identify the stars because it's much more of a team game. Not knocking it at all but I love my 80's & 90's NBA.

Yeah but then again refs don’t allow them to. Some might say, “big deal... commit the foul and move on if you really love physical basketball”. At the end of the day, players play to win. Physical basketball can only go as far as the refs allow them to go considering they can literally eject someone with two consecutive whistles. I think it says a lot when today’s league, though so player driven, is not enough to confront or change the officiating of the game. I’m pretty sure Damian lillard would’ve loved to build up some muscle before his playoff matchup against westbrook and going at it all series long instead of settling for a series ending 3 point shot on Paul George to do the talking for him.

Meanwhile, in reality, Curry is getting hand checked every time he catches someone on a switch. Cross-defenders are so afraid of getting shook that they immediately reach out and try to bar his movement. Hand checking is part of the game and typically not worth mentioning, but some of this stuff is a little extreme. They're hand checking LeBron like they're trying to move furniture.

“Brawling 76ers, Pistons Fined $162,500 : NBA: Laimbeer, Barkley draw $20,000 assessments, one-game suspensions in the record punishment package. April 21, 1990|From Associated Press Detroit's Bill Laimbeer and Philadelphia's Charles Barkley, the main protagonists in a brawl during an NBA game Thursday in Auburn Hills, Mich., were suspended for one game and fined $20,000 each Friday as the league assessed a record $162,500 in penalties. The Pistons' Scott Hastings was suspended for a game and fined $10,000 for punching Barkley. Five players from each team were fined $500 each for coming off the bench to enter the melee, which began with 15 seconds to play, and each team was fined $50,000 for failing to control its players. The league also fined Detroit's Isiah Thomas $7,500 for throwing two punches at Philadelphia's Rick Mahorn in an incident that resulted in Thomas' ejection with less than four minutes remaining. "I don't care if I get fined," Barkley said before the fines were announced. "I make $3 million. What's a couple of thousand dollars?" NBA Vice President Rod Thorn said Laimbeer was suspended and fined for instigating the altercation and fighting. Barkley, who has been ejected five times this season, was penalized for fighting and Hastings for coming off the bench and throwing punches. It was a sour ending to a sweet night for the 76ers, who beat Detroit, 107-97, to win their first Atlantic Division championship since 1983--the year Philadelphia won its last NBA championship. The brawl came when Mahorn scored and was fouled by Dennis Rodman. When Laimbeer retrieved the ball, he shoved it in Mahorn's face, then stiff-armed his former Piston teammate in the chest. Barkley then landed punches to Laimbeer's face, and both benches emptied. Hastings punched Barkley during the melee. "It started when Laimbeer put the ball in Mahorn's face," referee Jake O'Donnell said. Said Piston Coach Chuck Daly: "I think it has been brewing since early in the season. Barkley has been challenging Laimbeer. Mahorn got in a couple of fights." "I guess it was just the intensity of the moment," said Mahorn, who also was involved in a shoving incident with Joe Dumars before his fracas with Thomas. "I guess it was going to happen. I felt they got frustrated. Isiah swung at me and hit me, so I mean, hey, just got to keep playing and keep focusing. It's that type of game." "I've never seen anything like that in the NBA," 76er Coach Jim Lyman said. Pistons reserve guard Gerald Henderson, a former 76er, called it the worst fight he has seen. articles.latimes.com/1990-04-21/sports/sp-1312_1_nba-game

@@dynamic6645 Asked in July if he could defend Jordan under today’s interpretation of the rules, Dumars first laughed, then offered a long pause before replying, “It would have been virtually impossible to defend Michael Jordan based on the way the game’s being called right now.” Rod Thorn “It’s more difficult now to guard the quick wing player who can handle the ball,” Thorn said of the change. “I think it helps skilled players over someone who just has strength or toughness. What the NBA is trying to do is promote unimpeded movement for dribblers or cutters.” Pippen: The defensive rules, the hand checking, the ability to make contact on a guy in certain areas, the ability to come over in the lane to stop guys from getting to the basket, that's all been taken away from the game. There is no contact up on the floor. The way I played Magic Johnson in the '91 Finals, I would have fouled out the first time down court. To compare how someone would have played Michael Jordan, Chuck Daly would send someone to wear him down. Even though he may get 30 or 40 points, they're going to be a hard 30 points. But in today's game, you can't put that physical wear and tear on a guy. Stu Jackson (the man behind the new rules) The hand check has always been a part of pro basketball. What we have done is interpret the hand check slightly different in that, if a defender has what I’ll refer to as a “stayed hand” on the defender, e.g. with a stiffened elbow, a foul on the defense would be called if it affects the offensive player's speed, rhythm or balance. It's been five years since we really began to interpret the hand check in this way, and we continue to focus on enforcement. Three years ago, before the ’04-05 season, we also began to really interpret and enforce the forearm and body check, where by we had defenders either placing a hand or a forearm on an offensive player’s shoulder or hip in an effort to slow them down and give them a defensive advantage in terms of sliding in front of the offensive player. When we disallowed that - the use of the hand, the use of the forearm to the shoulder, the hip, the body - that in conjunction with the hand check interpretation started to give offensive players on the perimeter more offensive freedom. It doesn't. With the rule and interpretation changes, it has become more difficult for defenders to defend penetration, cover the entire floor on defensive rotations and recover to shooters. This has provided more time for shooters to ready themselves for quality shots. With more dribble penetration, ball handlers are getting more opportunities at the rim.

Watching the Warriors manhandle the Blazers yesterday, you could clearly see that Jordan's brand of iso ball would not work today. The Warriors made a DELIBERATE effort to "ut a wall of defenders" in front of both Lilliard and McCollum, just like the Mavs did against LeBron in 2011. THAT LeBron struggled against that, but he adapted by studying it and finding a way to beat it. Jordan may well have eventually done the same, but he would have had to develop other skills from those he had, which was jab step and open 15 footer or post up against quick little guards. Whether he would have been able to do that is debatable. One thing that is not is that Jordan would not have dominated the NBA without a reliable 3 point shot and a higher offensive IQ, both of which he never exhibited.

@elfullin7 жыл бұрын
Yup and Jordan was going up against all time great teams, with not 1 other allstar. LeBron was going up against who in the first round? or even second? You can say anything to make someone sound better than they actually are. Jordan had incredible stats and put up insane numbers but the teams he was going up against were just better. LeBron took his team to the Finals in 07 because the East was weak. The Detroit serious was amazing for him, but go look up the game to game box scores and tell me he didn't have help. He had people that stepped up, so don't get it twisted, and then he shrunk in the Finals, where other starters had better averages and games than him in the previous series' that the spurs played against. Then he loses to Dallas, with horrible averages again, comes back to beat the Thunder which he played amazing in, then wins to Spurs, and I won't bring up and fully talk about that Ray Allen shot, then he loses to the Spurs, and gets 60% of his stats when being down 15 or more, while other stars played better than him when the game was close, he leaves Miami and goes to the Cavs, he loses vs the Warriors and yes he had an amazing finals because he was the only one playing, very true, but statistically that warriors team wasn't better than 2 finals teams that Jordan played against, and to be fair LeBron didn't have any help, so he went nuts and I liked that, then he comes back the next year and wins vs them, and I won't say nothing about Draymond getting hurt and Bogut and all that because honestly that's just what "ifs" and he won it so he deserved it, and then he lost to Golden State last year, and Durant to me played extremely well vs him. Durant wanted to guard him while LeBron didn't, and you can watch the whole series to find that out for yourself. He had an amazing finals but he lost so. All great players want to do one thing, and that's to win. For years we'e measured greatness with rings, and skills, and by far Jordan is still #1. Kareem has the most points but we know Jordan is the better scorer and player, Stockton has the most steals but we know Jordan is the better defense. So LeBron will end up with more points than Jordan even though he's 2,000 away and Jordan got 32k 32 games less than it took lebron to get 30k. LeBron has more rebounds because he plays the 3 and sometimes the 4, and the league is shorter and more flexible than before. He is a better passer than MJ out of consistency, but Jordan is a great passer as well, and defensively it's not even close, Jordan is better. The man had more skills, LeBron is in a league where you legit can't touch no body, the floor is extremely open, which makes everything easier on you. While I do think LeBron will be great in the 90's, I think that mentally he would struggle, the point is that, you are wrong on some occasions, and right on others, but ultimately, I don't think you're being honest, people have an agenda when they talk, or make videos like this, it's clear what yours is, and you can say I have one also, because to some extent, that's true, but LeBron is my favorite player, and even I know Jordan is better, so I know I'm not biased. I love the way LeBron plays, and I model my game after him, and it's easier, I've tried to copy Jordan, and it's legit impossible. Just too good at fundamental basketball, and too purely athletic, it's scary.

That Flagrant foul rule was the key to Jordan getting passed the Pistons. It basically ended the Pistons reign and hindered the Knicks from becoming the ‘New Pistons’, though big part of it was they were simply less talented. The Pistons were sort of ‘talented thugs’ who had a superstar/leader in Isiah Thomas and a lot of tough clutch player who did well in crunch time -VJohnson, Dumars, even Lambeir. They were mentally tough and had talent. The Knicks had great players, but were ‘shaky’ during crunch. You put Hakeem, instead of Ewing, and a clutch shooting guard on the Knicks and they win a couple championships.

Touch fouls are nothing new. Sometimes referees make errors and did you know there were *more* fouls called and *more* free throw attempts per game back then versus today. Not to mention superstars always get superstar treatment and Jordan is the biggest example of it. For your last statement, 60s players thought the 70s was soft, 70s players thought the 80s was soft, 80s players thought the 90s was soft and so forth. Shows how the rules were changed specifically for Jordan. Absolutely disgusting. Jordan has 6-7 teammates on the court every game. 4 players and a few refs. This is why guys like Barkley and Ewing could never win championships. Their style was always at a disadvantage with the refs. This is also why guys like Olijawan won rings. Their style of finesse took advantage of the soft rules. Sad in my opinion.

I don't know why it's so hard for people to realize that modern basketball players are trained in a way that makes them better then their predecessors. Only the best players historically can still be considered better than players that got drafted or started playing after they retired. Kobe still holds his spot as one of the best players of all times and so does Jordan but they are still not close to being the best players ever because in order to know if that was true we would have to look at every single player that ever played the game. I don't believe that LeBron James is the best player either but I do believe however that LeBron is better than Jordan. it's very clear to me that LeBron is better than Jordan because he is bigger and faster than Jordan, he jumps higher than Jordan and he dunks better than Jordan does in game, he has a wider variety of different shots that he can take from anywhere, he's just as fundamentally sound as Michael Jordan but also has a modern mixture to it that allows him to compete at the highest level every season. Jordan, Kobe, and LeBron all have a hard work ethic but that's where the comparison stop.
