The skyscraper effect is an economic indicator linking the construction of the world’s tallest skyscrapers with the imminent onset of an economic recession. The theory that there is a positive correlation between the development of mega-tall buildings and financial downturns was developed by British economist Andrew Lawrence in 1999. The skyscraper effect is also known as the Skyscraper Index. The correlation between the development of a skyscraper taller than a recent record holder in terms of height and the ensuing event of an economic crisis can be explained in a number of ways. An economic bust usually occurs after a period of economic boom, characterized by higher gross domestic product (GDP), a low unemployment rate and increasing asset prices. We are not only seeing tons of skyscrapers in China. But a ton of "world's tallest or longest" most of those are white elephants, such as the bridge between HK, the Mainland, and Macau. Barely anybody especially within Chinese population terms can drive on it. Since you need entry exit permits, insurance for all places, and driver licenses for all places. :-) big fat expensive unnecessary white elephant. Of course this is a very loser theory, and does not have much backing. I wanted to chime in, that simply building skyscrapers are not showing much of anything other than economic boom. And because of the face culture, and the size of China, and it's population size, it is not a wonder that China has the most. They want their image to be skyscrapers, and Modern nation. They have the skyscrapers, but they do not have a modern culture, or nation.

At great cost to their environment. Pollution, strip mining, and deforestation are rampant there. Biodiversity has plummeted and the population is hungry for endangered animals from the rest of the world, including pangolins, rhinos, and tigers, with the government doing very little to curb the "illegal" demand. Their fisheries are severely depleted as well and so Chinese fishing fleets are encroaching on other countries' waters, especially in SE Asia. So while the country as a whole is gaining wealth, it's sacrificing its unique bounty for short term gains. At least the population boom has subsided. Nigeria, Brazil, and Indonesia are doing the same thing, and heading toward humanitarian crisis in which the rest of the world will have to provide immense aid in order to stave off disaster. Nigeria is the size of TX and OK combined, and will pass the USA in population in 20-30 years, possibly even doubling it by 2100. It's already incredibly poor and massive population growth isn't helping.

Even Finland are doing a better job than China. xD But skyscrapers are the facade that the CCP are using to say "China is a Modern nation" of course, anybody who have lived in China knows it is a lie. And trying to compare Chinese building quality with other countries would quickly show how fragile that facade really is. It is about Face. If the mayor of a city gets skyscrapers, he will get face and a promotion. You can just go to the "green skyscraper" in Shenzhen. A cheap copy of the famous green skyscraper in Singapore. The one in Singapore is great, the one in China has water damage, plants dying, plants growing too much, and mosquitos. A lot of them. Actually many places in Shenzhen has problems with mosquitos. Mostly because people are either too cheap to drain water entertainment areas, or turning on the motors to get the water flowing.

Hahaha. Sure man whatever. Let us make a comparison :-) I am from Denmark, we are much better than China. But I will nominate Finland for this comparison. Why? Because Finland has never ever done anything wrong that you can complain about. ;-) Overall 52% of all energy consumption in Finland by 2020 are green. In Denmark that is at least 50% In China. I don't know about consumption I can only see production, that does not tell us if that energy is being used or not. For green energy, such as wind and solar power, the most used in the world. They can not be stored now. But the production in China was at 26% In China. So consumption in Denmark and Finland. More than 50% was green. In China production of green energy was around 26% World peace index. 2020 Denmark 5th Finland 14th China 104th WIPO innovative index 2020. Finland 7th place. Denmark 6th China 14th With Finland being nr 1 in rule of law, business environment, and ease of resolving insolvency, and more. GDP per capita 2019 world Bank. Denmark, 60,213$ Finland 48,771$ China 10,216$ GDP per capita PPP current international $ world Bank 2019. Denmark 62,134$ Finland 53,159$ China 16,804$ Still more than 3 times smaller, than Finland. Almost 4 times smaller than Denmark. Freedomhouse freedom index current version. Finland 1st place 100/100 Denmark 97/100 China 9/100 World happiness index by the UN. 2018-2020 Finland 1st Denmark 2nd Taiwan 24th China 84th. Global social mobility index 2020 world economic forum. Denmark 1st. Finland 3rd. China 45. Between Ukraine and Costa Rica. Social progress index. 2020 Denmark 2nd. Score 92.11/100 Finland 3rd 91.89/100 China 100th 66.12/100 It should be clear that skyscrapers does not say anything in terms of how great a country is. :-)
