It's sad to see that people have gotten so used to seeing others violently yelling and disrespecting each other when talking about this topic, that the people in the comments are shocked about Courtney and these guys being able to just have a normal conversation about it...

Exactly, even the patronizing tone of "ohhhh she's educating them" "it's soo good they're trying to learn"
@hayleyburns.93844 жыл бұрын
Don't hate, it's not nice, i don't think they are being patronising, they are simply saying it's nice to see for a change that people are behaving like genuine people and talking like adults, because sadly your right in saying that people have become so used to seeing people being homophobic and shouting and screaming at each other and it doesn't really matter what the subject is about ( if it's something controversial )and people normally shout and scream at each other it's nice to see some people who genuinely don't understand something so they ask respectfully like the example you have in this clip so it is nice to see for a change, it's not their fault that this subject is controversial and people shout and scream at each other all the time especially in this programme so they are simply commenting that it's nice to see. And when you say " they are being patronising" Think about it - how many people were commenting it's nice to see to see for a change, Absolutely loads of people were saying that, even if you are right about people being patronising some of them might be ( they probably are ) but you can't say they ALL were being patronising. Also you say normally people shout and scream at each other and you say they are hating, yelling and disrespecting each other and you say that is wrong because they are hating and being disrespectful, well you are doing the hating and the disrespecting NOW because you are judging people about the comments they have put, so WHO is doing the disrespecting now. I think YOU

These are the conversations that need to happen. People need a safe place to say the wrong things BUT they need to be saying them in order to learn how to be better. I love this approach Courtney had because it was approachable. They said many wrong things but she gently made them realize that words matter. You can tell it was effective because they wanted to continue the conversation vs feeling stupid and shutting down.

@scoutstrong3726 жыл бұрын
Pariah Carey True, I think people are so shocked because of all the crazy "social justice warriors" on the internet that turn everything into an argument and can't have a rational conversation with anyone about these kind of topics.
@falks9416 жыл бұрын
That sad thing is that it isn't rare for someone to be condemned and irrational in response to being asked questions on this topic, or by saying something that isn't 'correct'. Oftentimes these conversations do escalate, especially in comment threads online.

As a member of the LGBT community, I find there are two sides when it comes to educating people on what it means to be gay, bisexual, transsexual, transgender or indeed other identities that people may express. On one hand, there are people who refuse to listen, learn or take an interest and live with fear, hatred or simple ignorance of LGBT culture; but there are also people within the LGBT community who get so angry and offended when people get things 'wrong' or 'politically incorrect' that everyone is too afraid to ask and listen. This clip shows a great moment that a lot of people can learn from. These men are asking questions as people who are interested, supportive and wanting to understand, and Courtney Act responds in a calm and kind way, educating them instead of becoming defensive and condemning them for not knowing something. I can think of many people who would hear "did she dress as a woman when she was a man though?" and flip their lid with 'transphobic' being spat at the man who asked the question. People will learn and understand if they are allowed to ask questions.
