Watching the rebuttal witness saying everything I’ve said having had many years experience my husband had mental illness you don’t switch in and out at will , you’d act odd days before and you certainly wouldn’t be able to conjure up an alibi. Pretending to be her mother calmly on the phone to the uni then smashing a window for an alibi and acting hysterical when the police arrived saying I heard a bang and mum said get out . Also asking the police is she alright is she alright that proves she knew what she had done.

my thinking is that it is beyond embarrassing for this "perfect" family to have a murderer in the household. This is about optics. They think that people will sympathize with them if they think poor Sydney snapped and killed her mother, instead of what it truly was: cold blooded murder. I think this girl should be punished to the full extent of the law. She is a menace to society. RIP Brenda Powell. Your daughter is a monster.

she DESERVES life. bludgeoning with cast iron skillet to the head and 30+ stab wounds??? c'mon. even if she was "insane" at the time of the incident... schizo/psychotic symptoms don't get that bad overnight without good reason. if she truly had those symptoms initially in the weeks prior, she should have gone to a professional. i know people get paranoid or confused in these situations, but surely people around her would have noticed if she truly acted off. apparently her own mother didn't notice and that would be strange considering when schizo symptoms start the person's behavior starts to change and becomes pretty obvious that something is wrong.

The daughter stated to College employee she did not want her mother to know of her failure/lies at the College. It's a coverup in my opinion for a privileged child. No she didn’t? No one testified to her saying anything of the sort. She was in denial to the point of genuine psychotic delusion. She denied that she hadn’t told her mother to school administrators. Had you watched the testimony by school officials you’d know that the woman in that office had offered to talk to her parents, thinking maybe that was why she still seemed to act like she was enrolled but she told the administrators that she had already told her parents when pressed. she never said she was afraid of her mother finding out because she was not cognizant herself of the fact that she’d been kicked out. her denial was that deep. her actions reflect that. why lie….

That or those facts are true and very sad. The girl did not know how to cope. That's a learnt skill, usually in childhood and corrected by the parents. It would appear that those skills were never taught or those instances either didn't happen or were overlooked. As a parent one can't overlook serious character defects. That's what parents are for, among other things. Parents know that the child will have to cope in society when they grow up. You can't shelter a child forever.

@yorkierussell9255
@yorkierussell9255 Жыл бұрын
Most insanity defense cases involve victims who the perpetrator knows, most often relatives. It’s extremely rare for it to be a random killing. It’s simply proximity: you’re more likely to be around family and friends than anyone else. That’s why that happens.
@Juke582
@Juke582 Жыл бұрын
A rage killing to me but maybe temp insanity but we could say that about most family murders!!! I hope she doesn’t get away with this. If not 30 years in prison mental hospital will do! Just not freedom! She must be held accountable!
@yorkierussell9255
@yorkierussell9255 Жыл бұрын
@@Juke582 She won’t be “free”, even if she’s found NGRI. She’ll likely be sent to a forensic mental institution, which is just as bad if not worse than prison, for an indefinite period of time. IF (and that’s a big if) she gets out, she’ll be on conditional release, which is more restrictive and worse than regular parole… and it lasts a looong time. Y’all have no idea how this process works. NGRI is not a “get out of jail free card”. There’s accountability either way. The placement, level of oversight (people in prison or on parole have more freedoms) and the presence/absence of a criminal conviction is what distinguishes between guilty vs. NGRI. Y’all gotta get educated on this topic, because y’all can’t be serving on a jury if y’all don’t know what happens to people who are found NGRI. Plus, mentally ill people who go to prison have their mental problems exacerbated because the quality of care is 💩. Prison is not designed for mentally ill offenders. That’s why reoffense rates among prisoners with mental illnesses is *high* .There are no structured treatment programs or nearly as much strict oversight. Both structured treatment programs and VERY strict oversight are in place with post-verdict NGRI, and they end up protecting the defendant and the public *BETTER* than if someone was just found guilty. The reoffense rates for people found NGRI is LOW. Much lower than mentally ill offenders in prison. Also, you really can’t say there was temp insanity with most family murders. Not even close. Y’all need to do some reading on the stats, the process, and why NGRI exists, and how it applies. It is a RARE defense.

This. If she randomly attacked her mom, it would so different. Sydney was trying to continue this fake life she built of her still being in college and then adding onto it by creating yet another lie that someone broke in and now that she’s insane. And for gods sake, people cannot be this naive, you’re really acting like they didn’t go through multiple doctors until they found one who would give them the insanity plea they wanted? Which there is proof because some of the initial psychologists they spoke to said they could see her “psychosis” being fake

Keep in mind that being found not guilty by reason of insanity might be a worse punishment. Just because you're found "not guilty" doesn't mean you just go home and enjoy the rest of your life. If you're found insane, you're basically sent to a mental hospital where you stay probably for the rest of your life. You also lose some of your ability to defend yourself because the state found you insane and you'd have lost your rights to appeal and in many cases you'd stay longer in the hospital than you would if you were found guilty and allowed probation in the future.

I call BS on this one. All of a sudden, she became insane at precisely the moment her mother was on the phone finding out what's been going on. She then decides to terminate her mother's life. This girl has been trying to cover up what's been going at school, even staying on campus when asked to leave. The faculty could not have been more supportive of her. What a waste of a college tuition for someone who took it for granted. With that said. A kid needs to be made to feel that they can go to their parents when they are in trouble. Still, there is no excuse for taking a life.

Unfortunately Sydney has been surrounded by enablers and it’s still continuing in the court room, and outside the courtroom. This is how in my opinion Sydney has been allowed to get her own way through life. I don’t believe that her family stating it was close near perfect relationships find that hard to believe. Sydney didn’t want her mother to talk to the school and killed her instead. She has reacted to what she did after the fact! PTSD , distraught, banging her head on the concrete, etc…

I just pray the jury gets it right. I don't believe she was insane. I believe she was angry and had a lot of hate at that time. But she knew what she was doing. And I'm not just speculating. I had a very similar experience with my daughter. At the time of the episode in 2019 Im sure she wanted to kill me. Thank God she didn't. For both our sakes. Our relationship has never been the same and we don't talk anymore. We were very close. Just like this girl is claiming. I wonder how it would be if her mother had lived. I think we would hear a very different narrative of what happened.

It is very telling on the body cam, the father comes up and does not run to his daughter and asks if she’s okay. Even though she has blood on her he is more concerned about his wife inside, no concern over his daughter sitting on the ground with blood on her. Very telling. He knows this young woman has a temper, he has seen it in the past. This young woman learned how to impression management to those she can manipulate to get her way. Her mom knew this about her, asked her if she was “scamming “ them. I bet there are instances where her temper was explosive, impulsive, so that is why her dad rushed home

If there was a mental break, when she came out of it she would be inconsolable for what she did and would still be a complete emotional mess from doing it. There is none of that in this case. Andrea Yates keeps herself locked up after being offered parole a few times. Andrea will never let herself out because of what she did. This defendant like most others throwing mental health issues at the wall to see if they stick is a different situation completely.....
