4:43 and this is why if you're going to involve lots of people in a covert operation; 1. it's best that they don't even know they are part of a covert operation at all, they are, for example, just delivering a package to someone house because you are too busy to do it yourself. (Note: in this instance the package can't do anything too overt like explode, as this will quickly draw back to you) 1. Your plan assumes a good amount of your unaware operatives will fail...build parallel, resistant plans, not serial, daisy chained plans... 1. Let your unaware operatives figure out how to complete the seemingly normal and totally not covert actions themselves. It'ss easily to figure out what going on, and what will happen when one person is directing everything...with alot of different mindsets doing different things, it becomes a nightmare to figure out what the end goal is, let alone how they plan on achieving it...

Micro diamonds are very common and cheap. Used mostly as abrasives. Plenty of super strong materials out there too, although titanium 3 gold might be a bit expensive. Carbon nanotubes still need research to extend the length, but already has many uses.

@@kdegraa Yeah, Skylark posits futuristic physics that even a modern-day 10-year-old would realise is completely impossible and wrong. (IIRC from 20ish years ago, something about controlling "4th order waves" and thus having immense power. And then the inevitable 5th-order waves etc pop up, granting even more power. lol.) But if you can manage to look past it (effectively, treat it as if it's magic in a fantasy novel) then you might find Skylark much better than Lensman. Or maybe that's just me lol. Also worth noting for anyone new to his work: Although these are novels about the future, they were writted in the early 20th century. The social attitudes back then were very different to those nowadays, and sci-fi was mostly viewed as populist macho entertainment trash. Some authors managed to rise above that (including EESmith, IMO), but it was the baseline that every sci-fi novel needed to fulfil in order to be published. Depending on your attitudes, you may need to consciously look past all of that as well - but, if you can, it's well worth it!

this could be a comment on the topic in general, but if directed at this video, SFIA does qualify their analyses; that we have nothing actual to work with, IE that potential alien psychologies are innumerable and immensely variable, generally the topics discussed may be irrelevant or radically different dependent on what we can't know or imagine. These qualifications are made on the show regularly.

If (some) UFOs really do have alien origin, it makes total sense they would make themselves difficult but not impossible to detect. Sudden, obvious arrival is too volatile, and could easily trigger extremely paranoid reactions among the locals. Nuclear war or economic collapse are among the likely outcomes. A "slow" arrival, by becoming gradually more visible over a long period of time, improves the odds that the locals can adjust to the idea they are not alone, without freaking out. It is also worth noting that the cloaking methods UFOs use may be calibrated such that we cannot confirm what they are until we reach some particular milestone of technological maturity.

There is always the possibility that they aren't being covert at all. Almost everyone I know has had some sort of experience with a UAP. Perhaps they are unable to effectively communicate with us, much like we cannot effectively communicate with the other species on this planet, so they do what they can to limit the trauma.
@aaronvond
@aaronvond 2 жыл бұрын
Why does everybody assume our presumed visitors *want* to limit the trauma? Our alleged visitors have radically shaped our culture, albeit quietly and carefully. Who says they aren't shaping us exactly as intended? (Or--we shape our view of visitors in a way that we want them to be, subconsciously? What would that say about us?)

@lucofparis4819
@lucofparis4819 2 жыл бұрын
I think you're adding your own hopes and expectations to your initial set of hypotheticals here, ending up with a less-than-likely result. Case in point: when you suppose the existence of intelligent extraterrestrial life with the means and intent to visit us, and in addition posit that they would try to 'limit the trauma' of an upcoming first contact, then you're actually making a third, hidden assumption - that they do understand human minds well enough to gauge possible outcomes and devise a plan to ease first contact. This level of understanding of human mindset seems to me high enough to give them means to effectively communicate with us to some degree. Given this assumption, the most straightforward course of action would actually be to communicate with those humans that are in fact actively listening and expecting them to do just that, e.g. SETI. If 'softening trauma' was the goal, sending a signal to SETI installations, one that makes it look like they're a psychologically safe distance away, would seem more effective.

A superior empire of trillions of beings spread over numerous planets have no fear of us so the only reason I can think of them hiding is to not disturb our development more than is necessary. I think they don't believe getting spotted at great distance once in a while will interfere with our development much, sort of like human zoologists stumbling around the jungle, occasionally getting spotted by the animals they are studying, but not interacting enough to harm that animal's natural development in their ecosystem. But aside from that, I'm not sure aliens exist close enough to even know we exist or can send a visitor in a reasonable amount of time even if they did know about us. I think probably UFOs are either some sort of natural phenom we don't understand or they belong to an advanced hidden human civilization that share the Earth with us and are struggling to remain undiscovered, in their subterranean submarine cities.

One thing I haven't seen Isaac Arthur consider is time dilation. Essentially, the faster you're traveling, the slower time moves for you. Photons don't experience time. Even though we had to wait 1000 years for the light from a distant star to reach us, the photon itself hasn't aged at all. That leads to a lot of interesting considerations for light speed aliens. If an alien spends 100 earth years traveling to a distant planet, the aliens wouldn't age. They would perceive themselves speeding up, slowing down, and everyone who stayed behind having aged 100 years while they did so. Even planet size can make a big change to the perception of time passing relative to each other. Make 2 atomic clocks, then send 1 to Mars. In 50 Earth years, the Mars clock will be days or weeks younger than the earth clock. It would be like the queen of England getting sued by the assassinated kings personal lawyer from 500 years ago. He spent 500 years at light speed. To him, his client was assassinated that morning.

A great example of the difference between the properties of fiction compared to reality: Among his many different genres he wrote for, the late Isaac Asimov wrote mysteries. One time, he just wrote up a fictionalized account of a real mystery involving an executive who disappeared for a whole day. Keep in mind this occurred before cell phones became commonplace, since Isaac died 4 days short of 30 years ago as I write. The executive had gone to another company's office for a meeting, had gone up to the room the meeting was to be in, sat down, and started doing some paperwork he'd taken with him while he waited for the other people he was to meet with to show up. The end of the work day came without anyone showing up, so he left. It turned out that he had the wrong meeting room and nobody had known he was in there, working away. A lot of people flatly refused to believe an executive would go anywhere without telling his secretary. There's the difference between fiction and reality: Fiction has to make SENSE. Reality just has to be allowed by the laws of physics.

Urgent Question I just thought of for no reason. Off-topic, regarding Starlifting. That array of starlifting magnets... could it reconfigured, -wound there be enough energy available, to squeeze down around the center and divide the star into two chunks? Say you had several planets worth of iron to make electromagnets, and a Dyson Sphere to power it. Is there enough EM power available to overcome the gravity? In case you wanted two sub-stellar masses to save for later. ...asking for a friend.
@virutech32
@virutech32 2 жыл бұрын
probably not an easy tasks. You are talking about overwhelming the binding energy of a star using a not particularly efficient method. You have to keep the magnets on, otherwise the ministars would just crash back into each other, & then spin them up in orbit far enough away to not recoalesce. That's assuming the plasma even behaved all nice-like for you & plasma is notoriously hard to confine in the smallest most controlled environments so, while it MAY be possible on paper i very highly doubt it would actually be technically feasible

@@LazyRare I was sitting with a few friends in the kitchen, when one suddenly said: Look an UFO. :) So we all looked out the window and what we all saw i can best describe as a shiny pitch black manta ray. Probably 20 -25m wingspan, flew very low. like 200 m over the town directly towards us, fast but not for a plane. Guess 200-300 kilometers per hour. I had it in view for around 20 seconds. A plane at that altitude should have been extremly loud, but we did not hear a thing. We all saw it and it looked nothing like one of this military planes. Also i saw no engines, no cockpit, not anything that looked familiar. Still not idea what it was.

Before I started carrying a cellphone I saw what I was sure was a flying saucer but not having a camera available where I would have a reasonable chance to retrieve it while the UFO was still in sight I continued to watch it. It eventually flew in front of a cloud which revealed its actual silhouette which the starless urban sky didn't. It was an airliner with a dark paint job. Also I used to regularly fly kites at night with a flashlight dangling under it.

One thing you didn't mention is some type of long term experiment. A long term planetary or even the whole solar system wide experiment. Sightings could even be a possible variable or because of whatever they're trying to test are considered a non factor while they ideally aren't seen at all and is the reason they don't just go around in the open.

There is an old PC game called freespace and freespace 2 where Sol is at war with another species, when the shivans show up and proceed with destroying both of their civilizations. These shivans are like the reapers of mass effect and to this day remains one of the best games I've ever played. I myself think the dark forest is a pretty good theory, and hiding is a good idea but that could just be my evolution speaking for me

I captain here in the middle of the Pacific. Below is a fb link to my most recent encounter. We see UAP very often. I plotted their heading and they originate from two distinct locations. They are not ours. There are at least 3 extraterrestrial parties interacting with each other. 3 friends and I saw two UAP recently: Black sphere trailing a black cross. Not into conspiracies and thus looked into historic documents to see if those machines have been seen beforehand. Yep. They are here for at least 466 years and the thousands of medieval eyewitnesses say that the spheres battled the crosses and won. The implications of my sighting of a sphere supervising a cross UAP are profound. Below is the link to the English translation of a medieval swiss pamphlet. I read and understand this medieval German dialect and context perfectly. I managed the best translation sofar. Balls, crosses, black darts, tic tacs. Seems they are here for a long time. As an aerospace engineer I want know what makes the ships purr and as a historian -' why they are here. If somebody wants to fund a month long first contact off-shore expedition and Livestream UFOs out of Hawaii...I can provide the coordinates and 45 years of 100% safe captains experience here. We need to take this out of our governments hands and build real transparency. Link to my short UFO doc: Facebook.com/transascend Thx Isaac for your work!

My favorite alien conspiracy storyline comes from the B5 spinoff Crusade. The government of an Alien species with a history frequent civil wars invented a fake conspiracy of outsiders meddling in their affairs. "Any problems must be those damed outsiders." The plan worked. Once the fake conspiracy was enacted, there was not a single civil war. At random, Humans were chosen as the species on which to base the meddling outsiders.
