I was a lucky boy back in the 60's. My grandparents mainly raised me after my mom died at a early age. This was one of my all time favorite things that she made that I loved. She made homemade fresh biscuits everyday. Then on on a Sunday or so she would make the corn dodgers. I still remember packing some in my pockets after dinner when I went out to play. Our dog had to be the luckiest dog on the planet. He never ate dog food. He had grandma's leftovers 3 times a day. He was never chained, tied or fenced in and he never missed a meal. Thanks Kent for the recipe reminder. I have to make these for the family this weekend. PJ

Thanks for sharing. Our dogs were treated the same way. Nice to have grandparents like you had. Where was your dad or had he and your mom separated when she passed? I asked because I was the youngest of three when my father passed when he was only 23. My mother gave me up for adoption - sort of - as she knew the folks adopting me. It worked out great. later, when I met my sister, she told me I was the lucky one.

Thank You Kent. I love John Wayne. I love watching westerns too. But your a great country western cook. I have been cooking since 10 years old. I have learned so many recipes and I like learning something new.

I am a huge John Wayne fan, to me he was and still is an American icon. I'm only missing 2 of his movies, red river and she wore a yellow ribbon. I think I need to try and make these corn dodgers. Thank you Kent.

Not a fan of John Wayne. My Grandpa went to war and Wayne refused to go. He stayed home and made movies about it, doesn't deserve my respect nor any family member of a fallen hero who served this country, he's no American hero.

@@norme2681 My family is full of Veterans and we all are/were Wayne fans. My grandfather was a WW1 vet. Both my father and three uncles served in WW2. My father went on to serve in Korea and one uncle served in Viet Nam. All my brothers served in the army during the 70s. Wayne never waivered from being PRO America all his life. In fact it may have cost him his life. I even would call him naive when it came to the US Government polices and statements. Wayne wanted to serve his country. He wrote to John Ford numerous times, expressing his wish to enlist. Wayne asked Ford if he could pull some strings for the actor and get him into Ford’s military unit. John Wayne was reclassified as 1-A. This made him eligible for the draft, but Republic Studios held their grip tight. They were hoping not to lose their only A-list actor. In fact, the studio threatened a lawsuit against John Wayne if we broke his contract to enlist. According to the U.S. National Archives records, Wayne did apply to serve in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). The actor was granted permission, but his acceptance letter went to his estranged wife’s house. She never informed Wayne of the letter. Not all heroes wear capes or pick up a rifle and serve in the military. Just like all the women and men who stayed at home and worked in the factories to make all the weapons and material to fight the war. Or the ones who made USO tours to help keep the morale of the troops up. We could not have won without them. You can call Wayne a bad actor if you think that or even a bad person if you think that but to say he was not Patriotic or did not contribute anything to America is just wrong.

My family does fried corn meal mush, which has similarity to the basic version. Always put honey, syrup or (my mom only) jelly on top. The Shootist. Followed by True Grit.

Had that as a kid. been a long time. Just like cows tongue, no one seems to eat it any more.

@@johnnylightning1491 Even heart, so many eschew these days. I've a cousin getting meat we grew up on -- tongue, organs -- for pennies and turning it into freeze dried dog treats.

Have you ever made baked corn meal mush? I like it with molasses on it. You make the mush in a pot on top of the stove then put it in a baking dish or cast iron skillet and refrigerate over night. Bake the next morning and serve it with syrup or molasas

Never made corn dodgers but they look good. Our fav John Wayne movies would be McClintock followed by Big Jake. Then there is always Hatari, the Cowboys, True Grit, the Sons of Katie Elder and the old ones like Angel and the Badman. We have about 50+ movies with JW in our video collection. 🐎 Blessings to y'all.

My favorite John Wayne movie is “The Quiet Man”. I know it’s not a war or western movie but he is AMAZING in it.

Those "elevated" corn dodgers look great Kent. I love a good John Wayne flick on a rainy Saturday afternoon. I love True Grit, Rio Bravo and El Dorado and others, but my favourite has to be his last picture, The Shootist. Fantastic supporting cast with Lauren Bacall, Ron Howard, James Stewart, Harry Morgan and many others. 👍

I absolutely love watching Kent Rollins and his wife. I’m originally from McAllen, TX and I have a cornbread recipe passed down to me from a Hispanic Great, Great Grandmother. Love cooking with cast iron, love learning how to cook outside more, and I know it’s not a Western, but I do love McClintock! And of course, True Grit is always a Classic! 😁

In Mexico they've made these way back. The version I'm familiar with is shaped like the Sponge cake bowls sold in the produce section for covering with strawberries. They then fill them with chorizo, Black beans, cheese, or eggs. Almost anything is fair game. I love them with Barbacoa. Think I'll do some with eggs for breakfast. They also do a version like this known (at least by some ) as Panachitos. A little honey will make them way less bland.

I grew up on black and white cowboy movies in the fifties. My Dad worked for Westinghouse so we had a TV before Ft. Wayne, IN had any TV stations. I sat and looked at the Indian Chief test pattern for months. My youngest son just turned 50 and he has the entire collection of John Wayne movies. His Dad who died young loved John Wayne.
