@meenasathis4887 thank you!! I basically spent any free time I had studying with the exception of the day before my test... I took a break and just relaxed the day before. Definitely study your guidelines. I feel like if I didn't I probably wouldn't have done as well. I used the AAPC practice exams and they helped me understand how the questions would be formatted and how the testing platform worked, which took away a lot of the anxiety. So I'd recommend buying those if you haven't yet. Wishing you lots of luck!! Let me know if you have any other questions 😊

So glad I passed on the first try, it was all still multiple choice only as of 6/28/24! Oh, and I made an 89% overall with the score announced the next day on My AAPC, but got like four sections at 67%... and ICD-10-CM was 60%. I have a LOT left to learn. Fill-ins would have meant an auto-fail, I'm 100% sure of that. Maybe they'll extend the university partner program I went through, because 1 week for 1-2 chapters of the text was insanely bad. Way too accelerated.

Honestly you might not just give yourself enough credit - the fill in the blanks aren't that bad. They even tell you how many ICD-10-CMs and CPTs you need.

I just started in a particular online course . On on the anesthesia section which only shows very basic things . Hardly any practice questions . I had to find one practice question and answer which has Helped a lot . I realized how important is to know basic Anatomy and medical terms . I had to look up so many things just to know where to find them in the anesthesia section . Some of the questions for the Anesthesia put in surgery CPT codes as part of the multiple choice . So I have been somewhat discouraged as I am trying to learn the basic principles through the small section of the anesthesia portion . I need so much help . Where can I find a more or better quality test questions . Some I l saw you have Pay and being jobless and homeless I just can’t afford anything .

I think fill in the blank is not necessary. Cause some full in the blanks are objective. You can have a fill in the blank tanta can have several different answers or the person may not even understand it. For me, fill in the blank are extremely difficult. But that’s me.

I know you mentioned that the practice exam is similar to the real exam, but is it similar to the where they do the 4 medical term, then 7 guidelines, etc, in a row or is it all sporadic like 1 med term here, then next question is a CPT question, then it’s something else? Hi Victoria, I watched your video, and it was so helpful! I’m scheduled to take the CPC exam soon. Are HCPCS Level II codes required? I’m hesitant to buy the book just for 3 questions. What do you recommend?

You can go without your HCPCs book and still take the exam, but it would be heartbreaking if you didn't pass by a hair and the HCPCS book may have made the difference. You might be able to find a 2023 year book for cheap, but if you don't pass by the end of the year, you can't use it in 2025. It has to be either current or one prior calendar year. The other option would be finding one to borrow.

Cpt codes in the 10,000 range, 20,000 range, 30,000 range etc.

Just to add to the response, for example, Integumentary Section is 10000s, Musculoskeletal is 20000s, Respiratory and Cardiovascular is 30000s, Etc... I hope this helps.

There is no date yet for fill in the blank on the actual exam for the CPC. As of the November Social Hour, AAPC has indicated they have other priorities and that fill-in-the-blank is on the backburner, but if a switch it made there will be LARGE SCALE announcements well in advance.

I don't have details on who's hiring for what positions, especially internationally. It's also important to consider the need for a work visa when applying for jobs in the U.S. from another country. Because the CPC is based on the U.S. healthcare system, it will likely only be valid for jobs coding U.S. records. Keep in mind, the salary might differ from that of a U.S.-based coder, as one of the main reasons for offshoring jobs is often cost savings. Best of luck on your journey

The exams get a refresh every January 1st to reflect the current calendar year's code sets. Feel free to use last year's books, but just know you might be at a slight disadvantage. All AAPC exams are based on the current calendar year’s code sets, so we strongly suggest you use the current year’s books. The previous calendar year’s books may be used on an exam, but you would be at obvious disadvantage doing so. The upcoming year’s books are not allowed for exam use. @lishele1980 I was told you can use the current year and the year before. I am about to take the CPC exam in a few weeks and only have 2023 books. I have confirmed this several times with someone at AAPC and they said yes, either the year before or current year only. Hope this helps.

I don’t agree with fill in the blanks. It has already been stated that the test is already difficult- why make it even more? I assume they did a study on how medical coders are doing now and are seeing a low performance this decided to up the difficulty. If this were true I would have them on a specific section of the exam in order to prepare better as to rather go in and be surprised by it. To be fair, extra time even a measly 20 minutes should be allowed. At my college where I took the Comprehensive Exam (just to be allowed to take the classes) they ended up, at the last two weeks to register, taking that requirement away. So it’s odd that they now will make the exam harder when they took away a requirement just to take the class for it. In the end, we’ll just have to wait and see.

It sounds unusual, as the actual CPC exams typically consist of completely multiple-choice questions, and there hasn't been an official update to include fill-in-the-blank formats where you code from scratch and do not have a multiple-choice selection (just the CIC and maybe some beta exams). They are included in the practice exams currently. If you have more details or specific instances from your exams, I’d love to hear more about it to better understand your situation!
