Their job is to intercept, identify and escort aircraft in international airspace. They are not heading into battle. If a Russian aircraft did something silly, the next fighters in the air would deal with it if that one missile wasn’t enough. Most of the photos I have seen of the actual intercepts, there are 2 Typhoons (often one RAF, one Luftwaffe), both with 4-6 missiles though.

I can asure you, every pilot knows when he flies he is puting his fate in the hands of the ground crew, they are hero's to those pilots!

So my car mechanic is a hero? My doctor who prescribed my medication is a hero? My dentist who drilled my aching tooth is a hero? Stop it, just stop it. It’s people doing their job. I worked for RR on the old RB 211 engines and it’s variants, keeping millions of people in the sky, am I a hero, I don’t think so.
