TIP: I have a similar setup for my mitersaw wings with 1 key difference. I calibrate my wings by using a sacrificial stop. So I set the stop to 0, then I cut off the sacrificial stop to ensure its perfectly calibrated. I have several stops on my fence, which is a 1x3 T track aluminum extrusion. The stops flip up so I can cut several pieces without moving the stops.

You've mentioned in past videos about the stream of sub trades that you work with. The window installers did a great job, the drywallers did a great job, you're doing a great job; I hope the builder gets a good deal on his painter, because the painter has so much less to do with you making everything so tight. All the quality/efficiency should make everyone make more money and make the house overall cheaper to build.
@kyleromine14774 жыл бұрын
To that point, do you bid the job with you buying the material? Or does the builder provide the trim?
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
I am labor only. Around here builders buy materials.
@InsiderCarpentry4 жыл бұрын
You are correct. My labor rates are based off of how long things actually take. I track time on all jobs and adjust rates accordingly. So if a bad drywall job is slowing me down it is getting added into my piece rate. If windows jambs are out, same thing, it gets factored into how long it takes me to install and therein raises the rate.

Perhaps because I'm dealing with stain grade, where putting a mark on a painted wall would not work so well, I find having a little piece of wood similar to the one that you have, but with a notch in it, works pretty well for setting up the pieces as I install them. But at least for painted projects, using a pencil certainly simplifies things to the point that you can do them while distracted, as you say. Well done. Edit. One serious suggestion I would make is getting a splitter so you don't have to switch your air hose between guns. I often use three different guns when doing trim, and they're all plugged in to a divider it has individual pressure controls at the divider. That way I'm never using a heavier nail than necessary. I'm not saying that you are. I'm just saying I think you will find not having to switch the hose will save time and hassle.

Work looks great. I would recommend investing in an adjustable light rig which you can mount on to your phone or camcorder. Its difficult to see the details you point out, and makes viewing the video easier on the eyes. You could also adjust the lighting within your edit, but the range is usually limited so light rigs are used to over come it and make your video editing process efficient and faster.

@@InsiderCarpentry one day at a junk yard I saw some guys using a 1ft by 1ft cubed gas generator. I was surprised they made one like it. Been searching for one ever since. You could incorporate a generator, keep it outside to minimize audio distortion, and connect 2 portable LED/dimmable panels. Bust buy has a set, but it wont be bright enough for you, you'll need something with more than 700lumens in each panel. Especially when you have sunlight interfering. Flood the work space with a panel behind your right and behind your left, till shadows dissapear. These panels would be great for you cause u work in a space with a lot of echo, panels dont emit high frequency sound like the old gen light bulb panels do. Ur mike shouldn't pick them up. $$$ whichever camera you are using, find the white balance option/mode and set it properly. This will allow the camera to take in the light better. Try this out next time if you haven't yet. Proper light panels and a generator could cost you $700+.
