How many people were actually scared of this when it came out? Cause I heard that one of the first films ever was of a train moving and everyone watching it ran to the back of the theatre cause they thought they would get hit, so I’m curious on how many people were scared of this

By this time films were popular. The first ever film of the train was literally the first ever Hollywood theatre viewing, so folks thought they’d get hit by the train. Buster Keaton

Here because of Cynthia Pelayo. I never would have known this existed if not for “The Shoemaker’s Magician.” I don’t really like horror, by today’s standards with gore and blood, but I loved her two Chicago books, and I found the history she sprinkled in there about horror and this silent film interesting.

It's meant to be a comedy. The filmmakers aimed to make the movie evoke amusement rather than fear, its just 'technically' called the first horror movie ever.

I’d have to argue this is NOT the first horror film- and “The Execution of Mary Stuart” (1895) should be considered the first horror film ever. It was actually made by Edison Laboratory. It depicts the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots. It is only 18 seconds long, but depicts Mary having her head placed on the chopping block beheaded by an axe! It was the first ever use of the “stop trick” special effect. Considering the fact this came out among the very first motion pictures of any kind, and the very first to use this special effect the beheading would have been very convincing looking to audiences! If a film depicting nothing but seeing a woman beheaded and her head then held up to the camera by her executioner isn’t considered a horror film- how else would you classify this film?! There’s no comedy or other narrative elements of any kind! Just 18 seconds of what audiences of that day would have considered.. horrifying!

This would likely be the second " horror film" as George Melies made a 1 minute film before this called " the Nightmare" . YOu can also guess this because THIS FILM, the House of The Devil, was made in late December of that year, so it sands ot reason with lal the productions and props and rehearsing, even for what would end up as a 1 minute feature, that The Nightmare logically came First. ^~^ Thanks for putting this up though!
