I'm truly impressed with the G-class and Maybach being able to protect the passengers as much as they do, considering how extremely heavy both vehicles are! It really seems that this type of crash favors either cars that are low enough to keep the passengers head out of the way of the corner of the container, or something ridiculously tall (like an American pick up or SUV) that would probably hit the corner of the container with the hood, helping slow down the vehicle before the passenger compartment.

We should note that the support rigidity on both sides of the truck's rear anti-collision beam is obviously insufficient. When it collides with the vehicle behind it, it breaks directly without absorbing enough impact kinetic energy. As a result, the rear A-pillar was inserted directly into the truck chassis. The engine compartment of the rear car was not fully folded to absorb the impact energy. So truck rear bumper regulations must be changed.

Part of why Volvo performed so well, is also that Volvo (and Saab) historically always have had extra strong A-pillars, due the the rather high risk of hitting a moose/elk in Sweden, where they are made, which has so long legs that the center of mass of the animal would impact directly on the A-pillar.

it is not passenger cars that must be developed to be safer, but the REAR of the truck must be FULL to the bottom, there should be no iron bars hanging behind the truck which can be a source of problems. Why not make a regulation so that the rear of the truck must be full to the bottom so that it is safe for other drivers.

Great video and kudos on the effort.both the tests and the video production !! Given most new cars have AEB , how’s that factored into the test ? Do you turn it off ? Maybe AEB systems mean structures can be made lighter and as a consequence weaker ..as they are not expecting to run into the back of a truck like this ? Or at the very least not without a level of braking and all safety systems at high alert ?

This is a side effect of manufacturers designing cars to excel in very specific crash tests while not considering the wide variety of other forces a vehicle can encounter. So many of these vehicles have extremely thin A-pillars because that simply is never tested in standard tests. On the other hand it seems like these rear crash bars on trucks need significant improvements. There's so much space and weight that can be used to create a much safer crumple zone and dissipate energy

Excellent test, but here you can see cars with low height are the most effective (to avoid the truck bed) they hit the wheel with the chassis and not soo much the A-pilar and the highest (the worst) But leaving aside the whole test, how the hell do they allow these dangerous trucks to be driven on the road? I mean, they should create a crash-resistant bumper, make them MANDATORY to prevent the car from crashing underneath.

The current law is: 50 kN (kilonewtons) of force applied at two symmetrical points no more than 300 mm from the centerline. 100 kN applied at points closer to the ends of the guard (outermost 300 mm of the width).

Guys I think to enhance road safety, it is crucial to focus on improving the rear (sides and front as well ) crash-absorbing structure of trucks. Not sure what are the differences between EU and Chinese standards, but this needs improvements worldwide, especially US. Currently, when this structure fails, the pillar often comes into contact with the trailer’s supporting beam, which typically has a steel thickness of 4-10 mm. This interaction highlights a fundamental issue: the A-pillar must be designed with a strength comparable to or greater than that of the trailer beam to effectively withstand such impacts. However, even if the A-pillar remains intact, passengers may still face fatal injuries due to the excessive G-forces generated during rapid deceleration. It’s important to remember that it is not speed itself that causes fatalities, but rather the sudden deceleration!!! Other thing is it would be very difficult to built a lightweight and slimline (A pillar shouldn’t obstruct visibility) structure similar in strength to solid steel.
