Time has come to crash-test the Scout for ourselves and for you as well, and see how fragile it actually is.
During the years, we have heard a lot of rumors, either that it's super fragile and it breaks at your first but landing, or that all carbon will just explode if you will have a failed takeoff... etc
We were actually surprised that we needed 3 days and 11 crashes to find out that the Scout can withstand but landings and failed takeoffs quite good. Actually, I believe at least as good as any other paramotor out there.
For the very first crashes we recorded, the Scout had the Beef Tubes installed, the reinforcement brackets we designed for stiffening up the One's frame. As expected, the mainframe and carbon cage weren't affected at all after all the beating it went through.
For the second part of the crash test experiment, we removed the bars and decided we want to break it, to see exactly where is the week point of it, and what will break first.
And, then, the unexpected just happened... we continued to crash it, harder, and longer and we did think of any type of mistakes a beginner would do and tried to replicate it, and ... Yes... we have failed to break it. The mainframe ended up a bit bent, the harness super dirty and the carbon parts scratched, but it was still in one piece, flyable and functional. Nothing broke, no repairs needed, the cage being still very easy to assemble and disassemble.
No one was hurt and no paramotor parts trashed during this experiment. Thank you very much for reading all this description, and I really hope you will find/ found the video interesting and informative.
Please leave your comments below, if you have any other ideas about any kind of tests we can do with the Scout, without paying visits to the hospital afterward :)))

I have these bars installed on my scout They are amazing!! I also was having some frame damage due to transporting with the hoop removed. I needed to put the scout on skis so bought a pro one trike, it's the second best thing I bought. The best one was the scout. I also recommend these bars. It's a bit harder to disable but makes this unit very strong. Two thumbs up to the scout team

Actually, the worst accidents I had (and I saw others) were falling on one side with motor on. The ring bends a little and the prop catches the cage. Boom! Why motor is on - because it was take off, not landing! Something went wrong - uneven wing inflation or just a wind gust - and you are not straight on your takeoff. And it is not always easy to abort and quickly kill the engine. So, what I'm saying: it is not about frame ground impact, but about prop impact with the frame and the ground when the motor is on. When the prop/motor is off there isn't usually a big deal. But with motor on - you got it. BTW, it would be a good help if you design an electronic to kill the engine if the take-off goes wrong. E.g. if there is too much rotation of the frame or wobbling from side-to side. Using e.g. an accelerometer attached to the frame, I believe it is possible to figure out the take-off is not smooth and must be aborted. I am sure you can work it out!

Hey that's my truck and Scout. That was a nice surprise. Soooooooo do I get a free set of Beef Tubes for modeling the transportation clip? ; ) I do think those tubes would help a lot for transport. As long as you keep the OUTER edge of that hoop out of the impact zone youll be mostly ok.Hit that OUTTER edge hard and bye bye prop,netting,and spars possibly. You never really hit the ground that hard.You should come watch some of our guys crash lol. The leading edge on that glider took most of the beating.lol Great video man!!!
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation 3 жыл бұрын
Yes in such case the frame hits the ground and stops instantly , but the engine continues downward with momentum of inertia, flexes the rubber mounts and the engine and prop moves down and tilts back. The prop may hit the cage in such case even if the frame and cage stays strong. There is not much we can do about it. Stiffer rubber mounts would help but also cause poor vibration dampening. Prop spacers would decrease the probability of hitting the cage but increase the gyroscopic effect. Smaller prop would do Smaller prop would help.

It's made of carbon fiber. If it snaps in half, you pay for it. Go with a titanium frame and you don't have to even care. It might bend a little bit and you can bend it back. If you snap it, weld it. Parajet Maveric is king.

Looks like all the scout crashes were planned and controlled designed to make the scout look like it is a sturdy frame. The pilot applies the brakes just before the hoop touches the ground and the frame will slide on the ground instead. A new pilot will not do that and chances are that the hoops will contact the ground first and break, just a thought.
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation 3 жыл бұрын
Sure it was. I was scared. It was against all my instincts. Yet I managed to do a few without touching the brakes at all, check the trailing edge. Yes these crashes are not perfectly representative. People can crash in so many creative ways. Please watch the whole video for our comments on the results.

Great video, but you should have used the Scout prop. Because it's a little longer, it's more likely to cut through the bottom spar on those rough landings. It's happened to me a couple of times and I've seen it happen to two other Scout pilots.
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation 3 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right. Actually I thought it will break anyway and I rather wanted to destroy the e-prop than the scout prop. Now I see I made a wrong decision. I hope it is not confusing, I don't think it affected the test of the frame reinforcement in any way.
@mmcowan
@mmcowan 3 жыл бұрын
@@SCOUTaviation , hah hah save the Scout prop! BTW, every time I've seen a Scout prop slice through the bottom spar when the cage flexes (bad landing/takeoff), the prop has been undamaged. Awesome prop! Many thanks to the two of you for putting this together. I'm always defending the Scout when people are saying it's fragile and this helps a LOT.
@SCOUTaviation
@SCOUTaviation 3 жыл бұрын
Actually that has little to do with flexing of the cage nor frame. On impact the frame stops suddenly but the engine momentum inertia will flex the rubber mounts down. This the prop hits the inside of the cage at the bottom. Harder engine mounts might help but we do not want to use other than recommended by vittorazi. Prop spacer would help but I like to have the prop as close as possible to reduce the gyroscopic leverage. Not crashing would help ;-)
@mmcowan
@mmcowan 3 жыл бұрын
@@SCOUTaviation , good to know! I agree with your choices, once again. Yeah, the crashing less will help...or accidentally cage-dragging this storage container and hitting the lip at the end (as the case may be).
