I feel that Incubus encompasses the Nu Metal sounds way more than A Perfect Circle does. I personally think that Incubus especially with their earlier stuff up to Make Yourself can actually fit within the nu metal mold... At least if fits better than A Perfect Circle, especially with albums like Thirteenth Step I think that APC is a thing of their own just like how you mentioned for Incubus and if I were to make this list they would probably be in reverse positions.
@genityishere696810 ай бұрын
Ngl, the more I think about it, I think this list is more for bands that were considered a part of the nu metal scene rather than them having the sound of nu metal. I especially think that since most of the characteristics named for nu metal are most definitely not exclusive to nu metal at all (most post-grunge or even regular grunge had sad/dark lyrics).

One reason I adore the very idea of this list is because I've always been a big proponent of the things nu-metal did RIGHT. The best nu-metal inspired real emotion, both from the musicians and from the listener. Hurt's "Rapture" is one of the few songs to ever truly make me cry, and I'm not ashamed to admit that. Korn's first album is basically an exercise in raw emotion. The end of "Daddy" is one of the most soul-crushing things I have ever listened to, because there's nothing fake about it (despite what some may believe). When nu-metal hit, it hit very hard. I do have an issue with some of the bands listed, though, particularly Deftones, and you even pointed out why in the video. Deftones are basically like Mad Max. They were pulled into a situation that they didn't care for either way and plowed through it. They are about as nu-metal as Faith No More, really. Both are undeniably huge reasons why nu-metal even existed, but they themselves weren't really nu-metal by proxy. I love Deftones more than words can really express, but I don't think they are nu-metal just because they were hugely influential to that scene, if that makes sense. Still, solid video...as long as we're clear that Chevelle was, is, and will always be awesome. I hope you weren't alluding to Chevelle being "mediocre" or, dare I say it, worse than that near the end of the video.

Just have to say, the concept of this video is completely brilliant. I have rarely related to anything on KZbin as much as a guy about my age arguing with his younger self and coming to terms with a genre that most (some) of us grew out of and has not aged well at all. I moved on from the nu-metal genre sometime around 2004/2005 and most of the artists listed here actually do stir some nostalgic feelings from me. Again, this video is just tremendous and easily one of the best things I've ever seen on KZbin. Kudos!

Even though I was born in ‘06, this music is really a nostalgia trip, because my town in Ohio had most of its development in the late 90’s, and certain areas (especially the mall area) are very trapped in that time period. The reason why it’s nostalgic is probably because those were some of the first memories I made.

And I personally think that Disturbed didn't really put much out of note since their debut (their last album was especially awful) while Korn at least was able to put out decent music until at least their 3rd or 4th album. Also glad to see Mudvayne considering I think they're commonly overlooked even though LD 50 was a fantastic album in my opinion.

Have you listed to their stuff lately? Yeah, it is pretty definitively Nu-Metal, but... It also doesn't hold up very well either. I dunno. That could just be me, but for this list I also took into account how well the music holds up today, and Korn just couldn't pass that test. Once you mature past 15, they just become kinda unlistenable. To me at least. I did leave a small mention of them at the end of the video. They were definitely one of the forefathers of the genre, but were they good? ...Eh, I say no, but everyone's got a right to their own opinion here.

+The Rock Critic Their new music is pretty meh, but I just can't agree with you about the old. Old Korn is some of the most passionate music I could ever put to ear. Granted they have their moments of immature "shock" factor, but they produced some of the most emotionally impacting music that came from the 90s. Not to mention how innovative their music is, even for Nu Metal. Other than minor resemblances with the vastly inferior Adema, there was never a Nu Metal band that sounded like Korn.

Linkin Park was one of the bands that manage to show equal love for rock, hip-hop and electronica without marring any of them like their rock-rap peers. Chester Bennington's voice and lyrics describes alienation, mental health, recovery and various other things in poetic ways and with honest emotion, and Mike Shinoda's rapping feels more at home with the tracks than it would with most rap rockers trying to have an equal balance of both in vain. Not to mention that they are always looking for fresh ways to approach their formula of mixing rap, rock and electronica every album. Plus, Collision Course!

I just want to say that this is not just an awesome video, it's a really unique one. I've never really seen a comparison of present and past taste in this way before. It was really well done dude, you should be proud of this video. Also while Rage of the Machine is a great band, I actually do think SOAD is better. While you can make fun of them for their goofy lyrics, I think it was part of their charm and in actuality those lyrics tend to mean more than you think. Pogo for example, isn't actually about pogoing. The pogo is [Serj's] dick and the song was actually about him having an orgy. What I like about the band is that they liked to fuck around, made goofy and weird songs or just sung about sex just for fun but also had really intelligent things to say politically and it was a great balance. Rage Against the Machine like I said was still a stellar band, but they didn't hit me in nearly the same way SOAD did. If you prefer them that's cool. Again though, really great video man!

Ooh, loved this video. The "where are they now" and general time-travel jokes (and that callback to the Raditude review; wasn't expecting that!) all hit it out of the park. As a *Rock Band* player, I was introduced to a ton of nu-metal, and they were generally really fun to play both as guitarists and vocalists. System of a Down's picks (Hypnotize, Chop Suey, BYOB, and a couple more) showed off their variety in tone but also their skill, and Disturbed were on the second game's disk with Down With the Sickness, which is just a blast (can't say I can quite pull off that Ooh-ah-ah-ah-ah, though XD). My first guitar game, GH3, also started me off with Stricken. Slipknot were also on both my Guitar Hero and Rock Band introductions with Before I Forget, and I definitely grew a taste for the group's insanity. I even appreciated songs like Snuff, though I imagine that won't be the case for most. Out of the bands new to me on this list, I'd definitely say Hurt looks the most interesting; I'll be sure to check them out soon! P.S. Was the end gag a clip from something or a cameo?

RhythmGameAddict Thank you very much. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Actually the "gag" after the credits is just an outtake. We shot his scenes as the very first thing. He and I live in different parts of the state, so I had to shoot him on a green screen at his place and have my buddy Zach stand in for the physical/BTB shot. They also contain some genuinely funny comedy, and great editing. Your nu-metal video was particularly entertaining, and your Weezer retrospective was phenomenal. I am completely convinced that this is, hands down, the single most underrated channel on KZbin. Keep up the good work Crash, my man. Cheers!

Can we get any more insight into how you wrote this, especially the contrasting opinions? Did you make a list at that age for maybe the first time you entertained doing a webshow but never did, but then later revisited when you found it in old notebook or something? Did you post something on a forum to defend nu metal that makes you laugh a little now? Essentially, are you really this good at writing characters with such contrasting opinions.

I'm thinking of doing a commentary track for this episode some day. If do, a lot of that process will probably be explained. The short version though is, I wanted to kinda make fun of myself for some of the bands I used to like as a kid, but then thought, "wait, wouldn't my younger self still want to defend his opinion, regardless?"

Cody Warren Thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. Yeah, I actually didn't intend for this video to go Hour-plus, but given that the entire script is basically a big debate between two characters, I couldn't pull it off without going all out. The next episode will cover a single album and I'm thinking I'll be able to keep it much more concise. I'll certainly try at least.

Nu-Metal and Emo are 2 genres people to this day still don't understand and I blame mainstream media for this. Nu-Metal is a genre, yes, but it was also seen as a "catchall" of sorts with a lot of different acts being associated with one another. Great example of this being Evanescence. They never were Nu-Metal, but it was easy to package them with other artists that were making Nu-Metal because of the huge crossover appeal of many Alternative Rock and Metal acts of the 90s and early 2000s.

It's fresh to see lists with the obvious choices removed. For example it's boring that every list about grunge has to have Nirvana, AIC, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden and every list about thrash has to have Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax. Do people really want hear about the same bands over and over and over again? Is there anything left to say about the biggest bands of any given genre?

I'm really glad you made this video, I do like Nu metal but as the years have gone by I realized why and how it garnered so much flack. Even then, I'm a fan of Limp Bizkit and I still found that picture of Fred with the caption pretty funny, plus I'm glad I now know your opinion on Incubus, they're one of my favorites for sure. Also it may be worth mentioning that Papa Roach's lyrics did improve over time drastically. Maybe you'd disagree but I think they've gotten far better since their debut, and even then I still enjoy giving it an occasional listen

What I got from this video was that trying to pigeon-hole music into genres is a stupid idea. "For every band that got it right, 15 got it wrong"...this could be applied to every musical genre you can think of.

My biggest problem with this list is, well, what the hell even is Nu-metal?! The Deftones? Disturbed? Slipknot? Rage Against the Machine? A PERFECT CIRCLE? I wouldn't call these bands any more Nu-metal than Mushroomhead or Faith No More. Nu-metal had a very definitive sound and I these bands simply don't have that sound. They have more definitive influences, they're a more definitive mix, and I wouldn't put them within the Nu-metal genre myself. Also, no love for Sepultura and Soul Fly?! You make me sad...
