Great idea! It's a wonder it hasn't been a well known technique for years, so simple, so obvious!

This has been the thing to do in the 24th scale scene for a good while now, until a lot of people started making, and running, 3D printed inserts. I have done this to many of my small scale foams, and it works great. Now I design and 3D print my own inserts instead. It takes longer than punching holes in foams, but work so, so much better. :)

@@themountain59 well, if its been known for a decade, why didn't you bother telling anyone? Cutting the edges, yeah, well known, drilling out holes, you kept that one to yourself clearly

Great idea - thanks! I remember back in the day for crawlers with soft foams we would spray the foams with plastidip..

Hot wire foam cutter makes it easy to make crazy crawler like foams. Not holes, but ridges!

Yes, foam cutting works. Great to tune foams to weight of a mini crawlers. Lots of great ways to cut. Telescopic antennae tube, different sizes and sharp enough to cut holes. Easy twist and cut, no tools required. Just my method. Thank you for your efforts.

I've always had good luck cutting triangles out of the outer diameter of stock foams, similar to how Crazy Crawlers foams are.
@Br0rB

Well, that certainly worked well (I expected it would though). I've been doing this to my small scale foams for a while, at it works a treat. Fewer holes in the rear foams than the in front one, is how I've done it. Now that I print my own inserts I don't really need to anymore, but putting holes in foams was the reason I finally had to go out and buy a leather hole punch - which is all you need to make tiny holes in tiny foams. :)

Would the drilling/dowel hole’ing’ be an easier or more accurate process if you had the foam clamped between two thin pieces of plywood or something similar that is set up with pre drilled holes in it? I guess…a jig…this is what I’m trying to say. Basically clamp it flat to make the hole cleaner if a dowel cutter isn’t available.

I took copper tubing and fit it in my soldering iron and burned my way through some of the grey types open cell foam it made them a little crunchy but very soft

When I was in the auto service business I once had a minivan come in with couch foam roughly stitched into the mesh and rubber gasket of a paper engine air filter. They cut out the pleats and stitched the foam in it's place. Can't make this up. Resulted in a rich running condition and the oil was super sooty. Couch foam is best kept in couches.

This reminds me of those "performance" filters they'd sell in the Import section of autoparts stores where the filter was just stainless steel mesh-- sure, it will keep cigarette butts and bees out of the engine, but even fine sand is gonna get right through. I think that to a great many people, the processes through which a car works is essentially magic.

That is a good idea. I was searching for any "directional foam" that's soft up/down and stiff side to side, couldn't find anything lol. This kind of does that

You can get a brass tube, sharpen the end of it inside send out and it’ll cut through any foam you want like butter.

Soak foam in water and freeze it before drilling. You could also use a bandsaw and cut a series of notches in the edge of the foam like a saw tooth pattern. Prolly easier than drilling.

Also. Ive liked to take a razor and star or cog the outside perimeter of the foam. Similar to the crazy crawler foams. Works a treat! I just did that to a set of jconcepts landmines foams last week.

Pro tip: Run it like it’s real. Pull those foams, freeze those tire and wheels and glue up those beads! Re-freeze, poke hole and re-glue to adjust pressure. Enjoy!

Great vid, your an awesome tire tester. But im on the east coast and deal with more dirt hills, loose and packed. Maybe you could come up with a way to do some testing on those conditions. Maybe a few hundred dollars worth of soil from somewhere.

popular 15 yrs ago before Nova dual stage, 1/4"-3/8" off the outside diameter, 1/4" gap between holes, no bigger hole then what you did on that size foam. BUT better use is to cut them to be a inner foam on a dual stage, then use your choice of outer.

If you only partially drill through, you can make the outside stiffer like they do on the A.L.T. Foams from Germany.

If you mean the one off to the right (and not off in the background) it's a palo verde. The love the desert. I've never planted one, and we have like half a dozen. Phenomenally messy. Also has thorns. But very pretty in bloom, and this is the desert, so we take what we can get.

I did that with SCX24 foams by grinding a sharp edge on some tubing and using that to cut the holes. They were already too soft so it didn't work that well. This was a great result though!!
