Med student and nutrition buff here, that DNA methylation test sounds like utter bull and fear mongering. Maybe James did butcher it, but nahh. It doesn't sound like it has a proper basis. A simple blood draw could tell you what you're actually deficient in. And the pregnancy and folate bit has nothing to do with "DNA methylation" but everything to do with the fact that women need more folate and B12 in pregnancy, but are more often deficient. Women's multivitamins always include folate because being deficient before knowing you're pregnant leads to NEURAL TUBE DEFECTS. Has fuck all to do with DNA. The folic acid form in supplements is better absorbed than from food sources, so telling people to pay for a test rather than just seek out vitamins in multiple forms-- like a well rounded diet and supplements on the side in case, is wild. Checking to see what DNA is methylated (inactivated) in your body (as DNA is when not in use), is purely ridiculous.
