How about buying the M1 macbook air, which is fanless, but plugging it into an external laptop fan stand, and then running high workloads? Would that be ok for longevity? This solution sounds like a budget middle ground between performance & heat minimisation, as such I was just wondering if I could get your opinion on this please?

I just bought a M1 Macbook Air to replace my 10 years old Macbook Air. My 10 year old Macbook Air was still working great but I was using Big Sur at work and wanted it on my laptop. The number one rule in my opinion is to keep it away from liquids, to the extent of never leaving drinks right next to it and never pass drinks over it. I keep mine in a case when I'm not uisng it, and my next tip is very important on older macbooks and that is NEVER EVER use a third party charger, only use a genuine apple charger.

That’s why I buy macs, I only upgrade every 6-8 years, they’re a great investment. It’s easy for me to buy the upgraded ram and SSD options, despite the upfront cost, because it’s a better deal in the long run than replacing a cheap windows machine every 1.5 years. Plus they have great resale value, so if I ever want to upgrade early it’s basically 50-70% off a new one if I sell the old one.

A note on thermal performance and longevity. With the temps that these chips run at and thermal throttle at, (which is actually a bit different between the air and pro), you may get more performance out of the pro, especially for long hard workloads as the increased cooling will mean less throttling, but the passively colled macbook air will likely do better for longevity alone. The chip throttles at a lower temp, and it wont accumulate dust. Nor does it have any intakes to block or fans that can fail. Its thermal performance over time will likely be more consistent and doesnt require the user to maintain it by claning the internals. Generally means it should last longer and be less likely to fail, even to thermals because its limits are consitent, though you are obviously sacrificing some peak performance.
@SaifSKH

9:34 - "Consider opening up the back chassis every 12 to 18 months to check and remove dust". I'm fairly sure doing this will void both the warranty and AppleCare+. A better solution is to invest in an in-room HEPA air filter. They run $100 USD or so and won't void your warranty.
@CreatedTech

That definitely will not void the warranty or AppleCare. You know what ISN'T covered by warranty and (unless you pay a hefty out of warranty fee) AppleCare+? A failed fan or fried CPU due to build-up of dust. You can't have a HEPA filter in every room you use a laptop in.

Good advice about keeping your machine safe. I've been doing the same for over 30 years and never had a mishap. Now that Microsoft has brought out a buggy Windows 11 with crazy installation requirements - none of our 5 machines can be upgraded and instead of replacing them all, we're going to keep them on Windows 10 as long as possible. As I go into retirement I'm now looking to get to an Apple for the first time - Macbook Pro M1 14". I saw a recent video how the Apple RISC performance has now outstripped Intel's CISC architecture - and significantly undercuts the power requirement which kills Wintel laptops. All the best, Rob in Switzerland

Wouldn't advise using one. I used one on my MB Air from day 1 and after a year the screen started to glitch occasionally, after 2 years, it started to flicker or completely bouncing. I cannot help but think that damn case had something to do with the screen going faulty, specially because I could notice the lid shut a lot faster because of the extra weight. Oh, and of course, the bottom part of the case, made the laptop heat a lot faster, despite the 'vents' it had.

In addition to buying enough RAM for YOUR needs and a 10 Gigabit Ethernet port, the most important way to prolong the life of your new non-upgradeable Mac is to prolong the life of your minimum size SSD. Buy an external SSD and use it for storage from Day 1. 2TB Sabrent if you're a content creator who needs speed and space, otherwise any SSD. Keep it permanently plugged in and put MacOS on it as well !! The end of the SSD, is the end of your fast Mac. This is a cost effective way to do it too.

A general tip: Please don't use wet wipes (tissues) to clean your macbook body. It brings pitting on the body and the sweat does make colour diminishing. Stay safe!

The more powerfull a computer you buy, the less its performance will *appear* to drop over time. Performance doesn't really drop perceptively on it's own. It's software changes that demand more performance over time that lead to this perception. Websites get more complicated, programs and OS updates demand more horsepower, but the computer's performance doesn't really degrade.

I'm a graphic artist and have a Early 2008 Mac Pro Tower (got it brand new) fully loaded and have left them on only to sleep when not in use. It is now almost 14 years later and still at it. Didn't do anything to it but it lasts "forever" as far as I am concerned. Still mass-producing jobs and cranking them out with ease. (Although I'm limited only to Mac OS X El Capitan and Illustrator CS6, Photoshop CS6.)

If you're really worried about storage or memory a few years down the road - you could always fly to Shenzhen and have one of the markets install a higher capacity module on it for a fraction of the cost of the part in North America. Not saying there's no risks associated with it, but I'm sure 5+ years down the road a 16GB or even 32GB module with a new storage module would breathe a new breath of life into it. I have a friend who purchased a 2TB memory module for his iPhone 11 Pro over there for $80 USD, and the flight cost him $300. And I'm sure he could save himself the flight by finding a reputable source/friend to ship it to and have them do it for you.

Keep the SSD at stock, iCloud is super cheap and syncs well. I pay for 50gb of iCloud and its like $2/month or something. Never going to reach the price of the SSD upgrade, and you can scale iCloud storage according to how much you're actually using. Also, its all backed up!

Purchased a new M3 MacBook Air for $815 USD almost a month ago. I've been using a Windows gaming PC and a Windows laptop for over 8 years. I purchased this MacBook because my Windows laptop was starting to die on me and the battery on it was awful. I am so happy that I purchased this laptop. The machine is made of high quality materials and not plastic like all my other Windows laptops which felt cheap in quality. The trackpad, display, and keyboard is also amazing. The only concern I had before purchasing this laptop was the 8GB of memory, but after 1 month of use I have NEVER had any memory related issue. I like MacOS to the point where I am seriously considering to get a Mac Mini to replace my Windows desktop I am using. The software on it is phenomenal and since I am using an iPhone it works so seamlessly with the laptop. Apple really does do some things really well.

15:27 Whenever anyone goes to an Apple store, they usually try to avoid repairing anything and basically force you to use the damaged product, or buy a new one. And then they charge a large sum only for disappointing the customer.

With the built in SSD Macs, buy an external SSD and keep your documents, video, audio, etc on that device. Keep your internal SSD less than half full and it should last longer. You can keep that connected all the time.

A notebook stand also raises your MacBook off the surface protecting against spillage. I do wish Apple's battery management was a lot more aggressive about pausing charging. My MBP16 usually blows right past the 80% mark even though I rarely let it go down below 50% charge. I'd prefer it always limit charging and let me tell it before some long trip with no power, "Charge to 100% by tomorrow 6am." Otherwise 70% would be fine for me.
