Culture is what people do when no one is looking - not working but participating in improving culture by talking. This doesn't account for a persons drive and goals and interest - Kobe Bryant went over and above the "culture" - his performance wasn't dependent on it because he was driven to be the best - so, explain how those high achievers are seen? He missed lunches to work, he missed parties to work - practice his craft - I admire that and am trying to implement that in my life - sometimes culture is mediocre

wen blue I would say that “high achievers” like Kobe were seen, and some could argue that they were “seen” much more than 90% of the other players in the association. To say that one has to miss lunches and birthday parties to succeed and be considered a person that possesses drive and has goals is a fallacy... she is speaking in terms of an organization’s top-down vision and how the systems and structures that support those visions to come to life give the contributors to that system, in other words the workers, the best chance to go above and beyond, provide hospitality and fill the gaps in terms of what is missing in someone’s life. I will end with two questions- could Kobe have had the career he did without the vision and guidance of the people he depended on for guidance (his coaches, family etc), and secondly, could have Kobe accomplished what he had no team mates. Consider those two questions in the context of the “mediocrity” of culture.

Culture is defined as the combined behaviors of the people. What we do to improve culture has a few steps, communicating it is only one of those, but culture is a group phenomenon, not an individual sport. You can build any culture around the values you desire. A culture of "high achievement" is certainly doable and looks very different than a culture of "people being open and honest". Building culture comes down to reinforcing the behaviors a firm is aiming for. If Kobe was helping manage his team's culture he would be fostering any principle that helped the team excel. missing parties, lunches sends the message to everyone that those things are not important and that will set the stage for the culture more than anything. Leaders spread the values through deeds.

Curious - top sales performer that is self-motivated to perform or average performer that talks alot and because of that is great for the culture?
@GrantSpoon4 жыл бұрын
My understanding: Depends on if the Top Performer is also a culture disrupter. All it takes is one person or bad apple to mess up team cohesion. That disrupter's affect on team might be worse that his individual performance. I believe Ann Rhoades system is designed to enhance performance, it's not about talking and feeling good. Culture is the combined behaviors of the people in an organization, talking helps spread the message of what we're trying to achieve, but talking is not culture. hope that helps.
