Great Question! The number reported with a lens f/something is that lens's maximum aperture. So a 50 f/1.4 can be set from 1.4 to 22. Most lenses have an upper limit around 22. But it really is the widest number folks care about. When a lens reports a range like f/3.5 to f/5.6 this means the lens has a variable maximum aperture - as you zoom the maximum aperture you have available decreases. I have a post all about lens aperture on my blog - I added a link above.

Yes you can! In low light it is a tougher lens to work with but in most situations it works just fine is quite capable - people are much harsher on the kit lenses than they should be. (sorry for the slow response, I have been traveling)

I don't have lots of experience in off camera lighting beyond flahses, what I can suggest is shooting RAW and adjusting color in Lightroom or set a custom white balance before you shoot- taking test shots until the image on the back of the camera matches what you see. This should probably be my next video - white balance, such a huge topic.

Just went out and played with my 650D (never owned a Canon before) - lots to learn, these vids are very helpful, I think I'll be watching them several times and trialling several times to really get the gist of the camera settings but I'm really excited to learn it all! I think there is a chance we will see a Canon t5i in the summer but it is a pretty small chance and it is more likely we will see an updated 60D and 7D 2 this year and the t4i will remain through this year.

Sorry I didn't respond sooner - this is one of those hard to answer questions. It all depends on the amount of light you have and the look you are going for. Let me repeat that - it is ALL about the light. If your light is crap it doesn't matter what shutter speed/aperture you are using. But the general rule of thumb is a shallow aperture with the eyes in sharp focus.

Camera on a tripod? I'd probably shoot around 30-50mm range with the lens, IS turned off if on tripod and set your shutter speed 1/30 or 1/40. Aperture as large(smallest number possible) and ISO 400-800, how does that look? Shoot RAW and you should be able to brighten, sharpen a bit but watch out for noise in shadows if you have to increase exposure lots in Lightroom. Easiest/cheapest solution may be to use 50 f/1.8, depends on how much room you have.
@photorectoby12 жыл бұрын
Hi - all depends on how much light you got down there and the lens(es) you have available to you. I have a video uploading now, be done in 45 minutes, that will help you answer this question. I am happy to give a better answer if you give me a bit more information.

Adobe Premiere is fine, I prefer Adobe Lightroom, it works with RAW files very nicely but it does have a steeper learning curve.

Hi - Don't use Macro mode - it doesn't do anything. Just put the camera on P or AV and focus as close as the lens is able, it will not pop up the flash in those modes. I do have a few videos that covers some of the video settings 1 is called "How I shoot my videos T4i - Setup, Gear & Settings" and the other "How to Shoot Video without Natural Light"

Thanks for the great video! I've created a studio in my basement to shoot clothing on mannequins. The clothing have very intricate/shinny work on them and are on bright fabrics. What settings should I put my camera on to get a clear, focused picture so when I zoom into the images the embroidery is clear. Thanks in advance!
@mkaur130712 жыл бұрын
The Lamahawk lights are not bad, but I may need to add more light as I am still getting shadows. I find when I turn the camera flash on with the LED lights it the exposure it too much and makes the clothing appear brighter than it is. These pictures will be used for an online website and I will be using lightroom to touch them up but am unsure if that will actually help make the embroidery on the clothes more clear. Thanks for letting me pick your brain!

Thanks for the great videos. A question however- In the P mode, you mention at 5:16 that if you turn the main dial to the left, it would reduce the shutter speed and increase it if you turn it right. But on my 650D/T4i, there is no such option. Where your camera shows the shutter speed and aperture, I have two faint blank rectangles visible on the screen like how your screen looks at 5:56and turning the dial makes no difference. Thanks

The camera is on a tripod and I have both lenses so I'll try this out tonight after work. Do you have any suggestions on lighting? The mannequin is on a white background, cream skin colour and is 6 feet tall. I'm looking for lighting that won't wash out the clothes, keep their true colour while making the colour pop. I know lighting it important and am having trouble getting it right. As an extending thank you I will be shopping from your Amazon page to support your videos. Thanks again Toby!

Hi..Toby, I bought the Canon 700D/ T5i as my first DSLR with 18-55mm STM kit lens, 75-300mm lens & 50mm 1.8 prime lens. I followed your most videos/ tutorials and its helps me to decide which one more suits to my needs. Thanks dude!!!! I'm only using Creative mode specially Manual mode and as you said "Trail & error" was the best way to learn. Again THANKS & upload more videos.

I have one simples question: Prime Lens, for example, a 40mm f/1.8, can only shoot at f/1.8? As a kit lens 18-55mm can shoot from f/3.5 to f/5.6, thats something i've been wondering. Thanks for the atention!

Thanks for the prompt response, I will be sure to check out your next video. I have an 18-135 STM Lens. The basement is dark, I have set up a pure white paper background and a Henry's employee suggested I use 2 Lumahawk LED lights, with that I also have a daylight bulb over the mannequins head. Previously I used a Westcott ApolloORB speedlight kit with a canon 430 flash and a reflector but that was too dark and then the employee suggested the Lumahawk lights.

I just got my very first DSLR, T5i, and been watching a lot of teaching videos about the basic concepts of photography lately as well as operational manuals. Your videos are simply the best. One question Toby, can I adjust the exposure/lighting in Manual mode without having to take multiple exposures? say I want to shoot in the snow on manual mode and want my pictures to be brighter. I know you showed how to do it in Av mode, but I can't do it in Manual mode. Thanks

Your videos are just amazing. Thanks for your doing those instructional videos. Question: 1. Sometimes when I am in a hurry, using the Live Shot view, when I depress the button to take a picture nothing happens, but then I turn off the Live Shot view and use the viewfinder I am able to shoot, but I missed the shot I wanted. Why the camera does not shoot when I am using Live Shot view? 2. I am thinking about purchasing the Tamron 16-300 lens instead of using the canon simply because when I go somewhere, I like the freedom to use the same lens for different shots (closeup, zoom, wide angle etc) and MOST of the times, the wind is blowing with dust and I am very concerned about changing lenses and have dust fetting into the camera (unless I go back to my car which is Very inconvenient). Am I going to loose the speed for focus etc using lens other than Canon? Thank you!!

Curious if "maximum aperture" means a higher F stop or a lower F stop? Like, is max aperture 3.5 or 5.6 on the 18-55 STM
@photorectoby10 жыл бұрын
With a lens like the 18-55 it is a variable aperture lens and the numbers reported 3.5-5.6 represent the maximum aperture over the range of the lens. So f/3.5 is the max at 18mm and as you zoom the max decreases (because these numbers are actually fractions) and at 55mm your max aperture is f/5.6. Hope that helps.!
