People in the film industry started making films for themselves instead of the audience, then complained when the audience stopped watching.

Personally i'd like to believe that's how movies should be made. The first movie makers had a vision they wanted to see on the big screen. Those were full of passion and talent so people liked them. Now it's minimum effort/maximum budget with no passion, riddled with "the message" to scold the audience. Who would want that, no one, ergo. get woke go broke.

You can have all the sequels you want, just stick to what made your story great in the first place. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, John Wick, the first three phases of Marvel and the 6 Star Wars movies were all basically bangers. If you're doing a show, I would look no further than the first 5 seasons of Suits. Overall, stick to what makes for great storytelling and character development.

I am fine watching fiction movies, but the authors have to do a minimum of research into the subject matter. I am tired of teen girl bosses preaching morals to grown ups. I am tired of 90 lb. women destroying large men with a punch. I am tired of watching movies about members of the military who have no discipline. I am tired of terrible interpretations of the books that I love.

When they can AI generate actors, voices, script, music and all the scenery then the cost will drop dramatically and films will be churned out as a formula commodity product like fast food. There will be no gourmet dining equivalent in cinema at all. Right now, we are in the chain restaurant formula driven dining equivalent. It's an inevitable race to the bottom.

And we need more happy endings again. I like to watch uplifting films that leave me inspired & feeling good. I abhor most genres, but in the romance, drama or comedy realm it's not so common anymore to end it happily. May just be me but even the comedies these days are dark/low brow/immature themes, situations & language etc. I'm so over movies featuring adults acting like immature teenagers so I avoid those.

This is so true. I remember a few years back, this movie won Best Picture of the Year, Shape of Water. It was about a woman who rescues and falls in love with a merman. Someone on Twitter or Facebook (or some social media), said "I liked the original better". When asked what they meant, they said "Splash with Tom Hanks and Darryl Hanna." People were confused until they pointed out, scene for scene and plot point by plot point, that Shape of Water and Splash were, in fact, the same movie only S.O.W. is a drama with the gender roles reversed. Some of the scenes were exact duplicate scenes!

I found it bizarre. Was it really so difficult for that deaf girl to find a date that she ultimately resorted to finding Scaly McFishPants hot?? 🤨 I saw the bts, the director talked about their intimacy as if it were an inevitable direction to take. No, I saw friendship and mutual liking, the romance and giggity were shoehorned in. It almost seemed like she was taking advantage of him. When she was fantasizing about them having a musical duet number, she was well past the point of projecting her ideals onto a being who simply wanted to eat eggs and not die. And using a relationship as a means to escape one’s humdrum life is hardly healthy by any means. I don’t know about the “scene for scene, shot for shot”, do YOU remember anyone fapping in Splash? A frustrated gay friend? Or the ending? The aesthetics were great, and the way the director played with color schemes as the story “progressed”, is the only thing I liked about that movie.

I’ve always assumed twin films happened when someone goes around to multiple studios pitching their idea, and one studio picks it up, while another kind of liked the basic premise but not the actual plot, and end up finding another writer to write something with the same premise but a story they prefer.

I am much older from Generation X. Many films that had been popular in my youth could not be made in today's political climate: Blazing Saddles, Back to School, Sixteen Candles, Vision Quest, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, etc. One of the exceptions might be "Used Cars" (1980) because the entire plot was to mock the inflation of the time (late 1970s). It definitely would resonate with today's fanbase if a "Used Cars 2.0" came out with "Marshall Lucky" to fight inflation again - lol.

@@gloriathomas3245 Yes, the films are still popular by some (not all) Gen Z. For example, the show "Friends" was cancelled by some of the far left woke people with accusations of it being too white, racist, and homophobic. And that was the 1990s "Friends" - not the 1970s "All in the Family" with Archie Bunker. Although there are many of Gen Z who like old films and TV, there are also many who do not. For example, when Jeff Spicoli used a homophobic slur in his beach scene, that would get cancelled by many today of Gen Z. The same goes for a scene in wrestling practice with Vision Quest. M.A.S.H would get cancelled by the woke generation today because the show lampooned sexual harassment and had no female physicians. As for me, I enjoyed those films and shows of my youth. But they won't make them anymore in woke Hollywood.

I worked in the Video and DVD rental business in the UK for about 20 years. Before streaming, there was a system in place where at each step of the way the studios made money from a film. It started with the cinema release, then went to video rentals, then to Sky and video sales, then ended with being shown on terrestrial TV. This took 2 years in total and the film was earning money for the studio as each step was paid for. Video rental tapes cost £69.99 in the 80's and 90's because the film was no longer being shown in the cinema and was not available to buy so if you wanted to see it you had to go to your local video shop to rent it. Of course those further down the line objected to having to wait so things started to change and the film studios were happy to oblige, which became the death knell for the rental business. Now films are in the cinema for a matter of weeks and then go to streaming, no wonder they make no money. I'm not saying that we should go back to the old system because it just wouldn't work these days, it's an outdated business model, but the studios were very quick to run down the whole concept of consumers having a hard copy of their own to keep. Of course, in those days the studios actually made films we were all desperate to see, unlike today.

I’m gen z, I don’t watch movies. It’s not because of attention span, however, even though I do have ADHD. The issue is _bad_ movies. They’re not compelling anymore. Our generation has all but given up on movies because they require investing roughly two hours of your day to get through, so if they suck and you’re not having a good time, all that time was wasted. When so many suck, you become wary of them entirely. Especially when we have countless hours of all kinds of entertainment suited to anyone and everyone at our fingertips for free, why bother spending the time and money on a mediocre movie?

In essence, in a not so old expression, "Who wore it better?" (No longer applying to fashion, but now film and performance). Also, we DESPERATELY need to move from pop culture as story and back to MOVING AND MEANINGFUL stories from literature and novels. To my recollection, most of film WAS focused on this (is not most of former Academy Awards based on such stories?). Stories need to be engulfed in, to be drawn by, to be encouraged by, to be saddened by...experiencing toil, turmoil, struggle, and eventual victory (whether inner or external successes). Even if suffering is shown/expressed, it can move an audience AT LEAST to pity and compassion, if not a desire to help and care.....or, if evil and destructive, to overcome and have victory.

Hey Brett! I know this is kind of weird to put in a comments section (lol) but I’ve noticed since your most recent off the clock episode that you’ve been looking pretty exhausted, and the videos since then (while I enjoyed them!) have been kind of repetitive in their thematic elements. We’ve already talked about Hollywood and makeup and marriage countless times in the last couple of months. No hate here, I’m just genuinely concerned about whether you’re okay cause girl you look like you need a break. Also, I would love some more off the clock episodes hehe. Maybe one about horses? Or your fashion choices? Okay, signing off now, byee!

Next thing you know, we'll start seeing DVD players in antique stores. Even though my family has owned a smart TV for a fair while now, I still get a bit weirded out by the streaming services (and I'm only 23). We still keep a DVD player and lots of DVDs, but rarely watch them. As for present-day Hollywood and modern films in general, I've pretty much moved on from them. Regardless of what side it comes from, I don't want political messaging to interrupt a good story. One of my favourite films is Forest Gump.

Okay, The Idea of You was actually really cute 😂😂😂😂 And the only reason it worked was because of Anne Hathaway. She totally made the film, IMO. My husband and I were talking about Hollywood recently and I think that the agendas are affecting movies, but I also think that there are no A-list actors and actresses anymore and I don’t know why. 15/20 years ago, there were so many actors: Denzel, Angelina, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Ben Afleck, Kate Winslet, Anne Hathaway, Leo, Christian Bale, Gwenyth Paltrow… I could go on!! Now, I can only think of 2 “popular” actors, Timothy Challamet and Sydney Sweeney, neither of whom are that great. Has streaming ruined movie celebrities? I don’t know…. But I want to go back to the days of epic movies that we o looked forward to for months after watching the trailer.

Other movies made within a year or 2 of each other with VERY similar storylines and in some cases scene for scene similarities include: Twister/Night of the Twisters, Volcano/Dantes Peak, Arachnophobia/Attack of the Bees, The Munsters/The Addams Family, Jungle 2 Jungle/Little Indian Big City, In Time/Timer, Heavy Metal/The 5th Element... There's a long list. I know I'm forgetting like 6 or 7 at least. This has unfortunately been going on a while. Interesting point though, The Adam's Family and The Munsters was the only one that was unintentional. They were both conceptualized by different people in the same year but completely unbeknownst to themselves until both aired simultaneously on TV and even the executives were like "holy sh!t"

Yeah there was still book adaptations but also original stories like The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars, Friday Night Lights, Gossip Girl, Lost, Breaking Bad, La La Land, even animated films ranging from Ratatouille and The Incredibles ( Sorry these are kinda bad examples ) Those made a impact in Hollywood where are those ideas now. It really does take good writing and amazing director skills to make it happen. But no one wants to make the effort

Teach them to have their own ideas and to question all that they hear, even things you say to them, as we’re all biased. If you can teach them that one thing and give them a safe place to develop and grow those ideals I believe they will be okay. Educate them that there are things that will change and the world you raise them for may not be the one they’ll find themselves inhabiting. I believe they’ll be okay, don’t tell them that your worldview is the be all and end all, I was surprised when I got here as it wasn’t the world my father said it would be

The irony is: they play it safe as a means to bypass the risk of loss. But, as they’ve already proven, they’re losing anyway. AND, it’s fooling oneself to believe one is avoiding risk by playing it safe, because that choice is it’s own risk. So many potential and possibilities they noped out on that they could’ve otherwise benefited from.

For one of my college papers, I wrote about the push and pull of society influencing Hollywood vs Hollywood influencing society. Many times writers said they wrote about things they had personally experienced, but you can also see where they would get preachy even in the 60s. If you watch shows like Andy Griffith and Dick Van Dyke, you can find examples.

Deep impact had an ensemble cast and had a lot of emotional beats that followed several groups of characters as a comet was approaching Earth. Armageddon classic Michael Bay mayhem and spectacle, and sure Steven Tyler's song was definitely a freaking earworm for that year.

The Disney director is just reiterating what Dean Koontz said about good story writing. He’s absolutely spot on. It’s evitable that you’re going to have a message, but you shouldn’t hit people over the head with it. I think you just explained for me why we keep seeing Hollywood regurgitating remakes. I think of all the books that have come out where I have thought they should be made into movies. They won’t make money if they sacrifice art.
