It's kinda sad honestly because from what I gathered, RPG writers noticed players were using mind-control that way and made sure to make it impossible mechanic-wise; even in games like World of Darkness or Chronicles of Darkness where you *do* have mind control powers, they usually are written in a way that make it clear that the victim snaps out of it if you push them too far. Its stories like the Cringe Athiest one that make me glad to have the group I have. My Monday campaign has a player who's character has a shall we say strong dislike of the gods, acknowledges their power, but doesn't like how they basically use mortals as pawns in their games and gets angry at them for it. I had the group cleanse a temple of Eilistraee (Drow campaign so its thematically appropriate) and had Eilistraee herself appear to thank the group and reward the Ranger/Cleric who serves her. So, yeah, this character went off on her and criticized her for using them and not more directly fighting Lolth before storming off. The player admitted to me that he expected her to smite him for his insolence, but I had a better idea. Over the last few sessions during a large scale combat encounter, a Drow Bard NPC joined the group (several NPCs joined the group to give them allies in a hostile city that was now actively searching for them after an alarm went off). Two memeber of the group had met her and learned that she was actually Eilistraee in disguise. Last session, she revealed herself to the whole group and the Drow Resistance, offering her help and saying that the god hating character had basically inspired her to get more involved and help them fight. OOC everyone knew it was her, but IC its about to get very interesting on Monday. It also led to a kind of funny moment where the Ranger/Cleric, after she healed his mate who was in bad shape, wished the blessings of Eilistraee... onto Eilistraee.

As far as I know in the second story. The Chaos Gods are essentially the same as they are in 40k and there is also The Horned Rat, I don't recall ever hearing stories or examples of events or times when any other God or equivalently powerful being has intervened or existed. Not to say that being an athiest would make much sense in that world. If you were a citizen of the Empire and didn't believe in Sigmar for whatever reason I'd think people would chastise you or even worse eliminate you for being open to the influences of chaos. In Fantasy though I think it's absolutely set in stone that The Horned Rat exists because during the Vermintide the Skaven open the Skittergate and literally summon him to eliminate all other life in the world, IIRC.

It's one of the biggest ironies of the setting in 40k that the guy who set this policy and hated religion as a concept is now worshipped as a god and is well on his way to becoming one against his will after his "death".
@vegeta00211 ай бұрын
Atheism and gods being confirmed to exist work fine together, you can acknowledge they exist without worshipping them. Just ask Batman. People act like they're mutually exclusive, but every religious person is already an atheist towards any gods other than the one they follow.

Warhammer Fantasy, not 40k. Gods are very much a thing, but only the Chaos gods do much more with humanity than Sigmar, Moor, Ar Ulric, ect....

"I know violence isn't the answer." It is and it was. People need to stop saying shit like that. Fighter's violence was 100% necessary and if it weren't for that we would've had a real horror story. Also I don't think story 2 was handled well. You gotta call people an asshole when they're being an asshole or else they'll never stop. "You don't believe in gods irl? That's fine. Do you believe in wizards? Trolls? Orcs? No? Weird cuz the game has those. It has gods too. So if you can believe that it has wizards you can believe that it has gods too. Now quit trying to outsmart/accuse me of lying and engage with what I'm telling you about the system if you want to play."

As much as I sympathize with the idea of an athiest character in a fantasy setting with religious-themed magic archetypes (just for plot and philosophical potential regardless of results), that guy from this atheist story is incredibly aggravating for acting like he predicted the campaign would be about false gods. I do not support OP choosing the "you win, you're right" lie and would just tell him that they're real in the setting and they can choose to not play a non-aethiest game.

Atheist dude was just being a dick. And op did right by saying he won the campaign. However Atheism does fit within TTRPGs because at the end of the day atheism is about recognizing the "title" of "god" relevant. And why should they, it sounds slightly meta but objectively factual - a group of 3-5 random creatures around lv 15 defeat taimat a "dragon goddess". That's a pisspoor "god". With myself an atheist, I play atheist PCs but it never comes up and if does it comes out as "alledged god". Ive played only rangers so far, I see their magic as a gift on loan by both nature itself and by manipulation of (meta)physics. Thus drawing a sigil with some words has an effect. Personally I see this no different than the sun given us the gift of light and loaning its warmth to allow us to exist on this planet. Is the sun a God? To some cultures, and clearly judeo Christian and many other popular religions have such a sun god within them If it is just metaphors. Within dnd lore the Athar are an atheist faction with Clerics and paladins.

That right there! I think it came down to him wanting to "Win" then because he was Atheist! The smugness of how he claimed he "predicted OP plot" says it all! Also add Narc to his list of flaws with how OP acted "Submissive" when he "admitted" that the dude "figured him out" and missed how he was being "dis-invited" which showed he was "too high on his own farts" to realize he just GOT EJECTED from the game! He's a different type of Problem! The Player with the "DM vs Player" mentality where he has to WIN DnD by outwitting/smarting the DM! Such as SPOILING "plot twists" (what makes him stupid is, that isn't even the plot twist, how the hell did what OP describe get the conclusion the cringelord present! So their all just Wizards in a world where everyone has magic somehow tricking everyone to make them LEADERS and such "for some coin?" Yeah he most definately did NOT think that through! he's either still ignorant, or realized after he humiliated himself and only says HEY to OP in hopes OP never realizes what an ASS the idiot made himself out to be!)

1st: Why do I have to keep telling people, CHARM PERSON DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY!?! Also I hope that creep is in jail, he seems like the kind of guy caught dropping the soap.🤬🖕 2nd: Dude, don't argue with the source material like you think that the DM is trying to do a gatcha story. You can literally look it up ANYWHERE to confirm it. 3rd: JFC, it sounds like someone needed to snitch on more than one person in that college. 4th: I'm sorry, that rants a little sus. It feels like there is some information purposefully left out (i.e. why the DM wasn't involved in ANY of this) in order to make themselves look innocent

My theory is that the guy from the first story was always getting cuckolded. This is why he was arrested for beating his last GF. Then he tries to take his frustration out in game only to be cuckolded again when someone slightly less nerdy than him carried him out of a D&D game like a trash bag and stole his girl. In a sobbing rage, he did some fentanyl and took it out on his roommates and is in fact the SAME guy in that third story.

@eriknelson90111 ай бұрын
Ok saying violence isn't the answer after finding out the guy has an arrest record for domestic viloence makes you sound like a clown. It shouldn't be your first response unless that's what you are presented with. Just saying violence isn't the answer as a blanket statement makes you just sound ignorant.
@paulman3434011 ай бұрын
Or Naive! Many assume Violence doesn't need to happen. But frankly, despite being a peaceful person. I've LONG accepted (back in my mid 20's) that Violence is just ONE of many answers to problems! And sadly can end up being THE ONLY Answer as people aren't nice, many being assholes who can't stop (nor want to stop) themselves from being MAJOR assholes! I also love this one asshole commenter up here before I replied to this comment who was "honest to god" trying to be a "devil's advocate" for the BF and make Fighter the bad guy, up to including ignoring how EX got into Fighter's face FIRST, being the aggressor (hate to inform the idiot commenter....actually I don't. But the moment you get in someones face and make threats of violence! You ARE the aggressor! That "making people flinch to make yourself feel big because flinching means fear" are idiots and I don't feel sorry for them when they get ATTACKED because Intimidation tends to have that result! You'll get people to fear and back down! Or you'll get confused as acting aggressive and bring about a VIOLENT response! No one is going to "shot last" So like when you pull a gun on someone! ALWAYS do so while EXPECTING to fire it! Don't just "point it and think you're playing around" as no one who has a gun pointed at them is going to think "you're playing") This person ignored everything else because I doubt they care about the EX and more like the Cringelord from Story 2, they just want to be the "outlier/smartest person in the room" and instead come off as an "idiot who just admitted their siding with a domestic abusive alpha male wannabe to look important when their not!"

I hate the way the comments and narrator decided that the guy from the first story is a bad person, while he didn't do anything wrong and his girlfriend didn't deign to stop him or say that she didn't like it. And suddenly everyone decided that a Fighter was a tough guy when he demanded that another player not do something and then demanded that he leave someone else's house, as if he had the right to do so

What do you mean "He did nothing wrong?" He tried to force a sexual situation on the DM and another player, made everyone at the table uncomfortable and turned aggressive when he was told no.

@@Troublethecat As I remember after 6 days, he turned agressive only when other player demanded him to leave, and he have right to be mad at this point.
