I've been at tables with players who say stuff like "It doesn't matter: the NPC isn't real. Chill out already". Except the 1 woman at the table (me) thinks this crappy behaviour is pretty real. And - sorry guys - you notice how reluctant women often are to join long term campaigns? This sort of thing is why - because when we object, it's often US who are said to be ruining the fun by "making a meal out of a not-event actual situation". Or by being a "hyper-feminazi". Of course, there are PLENTY of players who - like the creator and contributors - also don't accept this behaviour and who will champion the notion that this is making people uncomfortable. The trouble is, when the behaviour happens, it's already too late for a lot of women: the escapism is broken and that shitty fact of their every day lives is front and centre once more. It's also interesting that I took a very long time to write those two relatively simple statements and am somewhat anxious about posting them because I'm certain there will be a backlash of some kind, because that's also a verified part of having an online opinion about a predominantly male activity. And, again, I'm not suggesting anyone engaged with your lovely channel is going to say or do anything, but that it's a long-since-acquired component of life online: speak out, it gets worse. Thank you so much for this video x

"...I'm certain there will be a backlash of some kind, because that's also a verified part of having an online opinion about a predominantly male activity." The amount of self righteous ignorance contained in that statement and your obvious gender bias against men is probably one of the reasons why people call you a "hyper-feminazi". I mean, have you been on twitter? Backlash towards unpopular opinions about predominantly female activities is generally worse.

@@pureityXXX how is that "self righteous importance" exactly? they just stated an obvious fact, that when you criticise a bad aspect of a community, people in it might not take it well. and clearly they were right. also you criticise them for gender bias and then turn around and have the opposite gender bias. hypocrite.

@@cageybee7221 Lets break this down "how is that "self righteous importance" exactly? they just stated an obvious fact" The statement "You shit your pants." is also an obvious fact. I just conveniently left out the part where you did it as a baby to imply that you literally shit your pants just now. The "self righteous" comes from intentionally implying a non-truth with regards to gender that makes their own gender look better. The "importance" bit was drawn from the first clause of their first sentence. That alone may have been off mark, but not by much. "they just stated an obvious fact, that when you criticize a bad aspect of a community, people in it might not take it well. and clearly they were right." That isn't what they did, they made a false, sexist generalization. I even quoted them to make it clear what statement of theirs I was talking about. "also you criticise them for gender bias and then turn around and have the opposite gender bias. hypocrite." They heavily implied that there is only backlash when criticizing male communities. I called them out on it and said that there is backlash on both sides and even named sites specifically. I was neither hypocritical nor showing a gender bias.

Not gonna argue with the basic things you said here. I'm on board with that. But I feel the need to critizise you on one thing and that is the sexism. "also a verified part of having an online opinion about a predominantly male activity"... It is also a part of having an online opinion about literally ANYTHING, you did not have to single out "predominantly male" activities. You are suggesting you are getting backlash of any kind because the ones reading it are male... which in itself is a very sexist way to think. I'm pretty sure also women do argue points they are not ok with.

@@Arcticmaster1190 I agree, but I can also see this both ways. There is a case for killing the character to send a message to the player that these actions are not okay and will invite consequences.

@@theblackantonio The character only acts this way because the player makes them act that way. You can tell the player the same morals without having to make an example out of the character to the player- it’s not likely that they’ll get it if they’ve gone that far in life not knowing that. They usually just take that retribution as further reason to rebel, kinda like in the third story. It’s like showing people that gas plus open flame equals an exploded house and then try to lecture them about the importance of fire safety after the fact. They are not going to reciprocate with your message- they’ll usually just feel hard done by for killing their character off. I have never seen or heard of a situation where killing off the PC as a means to show that actions have consequences fixes their behavior, it only seems to reinforce it. The worst I’ve seen is when the DM (or another player) becomes That Guy to stop another That Guy, but it was in a hilarious reversal where no one died. In the DM case, they *kinda* learned their lesson, but we can’t say for sure. Bear in mind, I did say get justice against the PC after all is said and done with the player; and if the other players want it too. Most people just want to purge the scene and forget about it.

Yeah... The DM absolutely should have said something BEFORE the game and lay out the rules. Unless stated otherwise, everything goes. Also... Nice; judging others as people ( who are pretty much srangers ) because of something they've done in an imaginary game in character they've played. Yeah... the DM in the first story shouldn't be judging and/or blaming anyone, since they themselves don't really have a leg to stand on there. That being said, once it is agreed or normaly brought up one isn't okay with that, they should be respected - unlike what happened in the second story. The guy in the third story... clearly didn't quite grow uo and deffinitely had some issues

My view is as a player you should assume all games are PG-13 unless otherwise stated. Ad a GM all games can benefit from a session zero but if your game is going to not be rated PG-13 it requires it. Current game I am running (Curse of Strahd without any pulled punches) has the potential torture, child abuse, cannibalism, forced marrige, more child abuse, scenes if hopelessness and more. Every player knew this before game one.

Hate to be that guy, but no, its not given what content are allowed at your table if you do not state it clearly. Establish a list of Do's and Dont's, and inform your players about it well before game. Take your players wishes into concideration, but in the end play a game taht everyone around the table are comfortable with. what floats your boat might sink someone elses and so on. And now someone will undoubtedly say "But you should never have X in a game because thats wrong!" Whereas i answer: I realy, REALY want to play a "historicly accurate" Pirate game. But i also want it to be a dark, realistic game where shit happen and people die, or worse. I do not want to play a One Piece-esq "pirate" game where its just a fecking title for Best Friends and Adventurers (Yea i know, there's alot more moral grayness to One Piece than i make it out to be, but only Cutsy pirate show i can think of atm) and that table will not be for everyone, and thats fine, as long as everyone around the table are aware of the set rules, expectations and so on. And if the dude wants to r*ape and pillage in that game, guess what? Thats fine as well, because its not a game about moraly upstanding people, and never advertised as it. But in general, read the room. You'll get a pretty good feel for whats deemed acceptable behaviour that way too.

Some stuff you need explicit consent to include in your game, it's not that hard.
@KamiRecca3 жыл бұрын
@@antonioscendrategattico2302 why? We generally ignore rather horrible, gruesome and terrible things because they are done to monsters. Do i need specific and expicit permission to go into someones house and murder the inhabitants, their kids, pile their heads up in funny stacks etc and then take all their stuff? Yea? What about if they are Goblins? Simple Morals are generally just vague attemts to hide weak moral standpoints. Heavy morals, moraly questionable actions etc are questions for Session Zero. If nothing is brought up, then everything is fair game.
@antonioscendrategattico23023 жыл бұрын
@@KamiRecca This isn't about the morality of the irl actions themselves, because humans don't interact with fiction the same way they do with reality. It's about the effect that they have on the PLAYERS. Darth Vader destroying an entire planet is theoretically orders of magnitude worse than, say, anything Ramsay Bolton does in Game of Thrones. Yet, there is a reason why the audience is more disturbed and disgusted by the latter than the former. Session Zero of course exists for that specifically but if your players don't specifically list everything that makes them uncomfortable it's not an excuse to then completely ignore their actual emotional reactions.
@KamiRecca3 жыл бұрын
@@antonioscendrategattico2302 and as i stated, read the room. I have 2 groups i game with. One is "soft", one is "hard" (and im putting no value other than the different tone for them. Aka i dont mean Soft as in weak and Hard as in Cool). In neither do we expicidly state what is allowed or not, since we have played long together in both instances. In the "hard" group nobody would bat an eye if i played a serial killer and sexual predator, in the soft group that wouldnt fly. But i know these groups. If i come to a new group, and i realy realy want to play that psycho character, it is up to me to bring it up. Unless they state "play what you want" beforehand or if asked in a session zero scenario and no specific subject is raised as off-topic, then that is a group concensus for a open playing field. If they later bring up "hey man, that shit is disturbing, we dont like it" then it is again up to me to back down, but it was up to them to lift sensitive subjects in the first place. However of course sometimes things can be apparent only in the rear view mirror so to say. Not entirely the same, but many years ago i played with a dude who wanted to play a character interested in ww2. So he said. It turned out to be an excuse to... how do i put this in a youtube friendly way... Most Honorably Greet the Former German Leader as loudly and often as possible. And that was not ok on his part. He was dishonest about his intentions, and his character was nothing more than a bad excuse to do bad things, because he knew one of the other player belonged to a particularly harrassed people of the timeperiod. The character literally was dressed in uniform and hatefull but stylish regalia. (Game took place in modern times btw) But i put to you this: If he had been honest about his character, had not played that character to make another player feel bad, but rather took the opportunity to explore Why the character dressed and acted as he did, i would let it fly, because that could have been a realy interesting character. Unless the other player had stated that anything related to the terrible things that happened to her people back in the day was sensitive. Though this was long before session zero was ever a popular thing, and we were young and dumb. But its not hard. Just say "dont play Evil alignment", or "avoid sexual content", or whatever subject it is that is sensitive. Again, that is litteraly the purpose of a session zero. In general, i do not like when people are donkeyhats for the sake of being donkeyhats, but i simply do not agree that there exists objectively special subjects that objectively and in every case needs special permissions. Its just good form to check with the rest if a dark concept is ok with the rest of the group first, but nothing written in stone. What i hate more than donkeyhats being donkeyhats are sanctemonious selfrighteous people who proclaim moral superiority for the heinous acts or standpoints they have or portray ("im gonna cut of the evil goblins heads in front of their offspring before i slaughter them too and then praise my god of light for giving me strength to fight the meat-eaters", also a horrorstory from the past), and then turn apeshit because you do something they disagree with (" you (ranger character) killed a deer and wears its hide, you monster!" (Ps, the "characters" views heavily reflected the players in that case. Man im glad i've not seen that person in 20 years. Here is hoping for another 20) Edit. To make the point. In drow society in forgotten realms there is alot of sexual slavery, torture etc. If the players agree to start of as drow prisoners, or its apparent that they are heading that way in a campaign, should it not be up to them to lift the point about it being an off-topic rather than the gm either portraying a modified version of the written canon, or ask "in what ways am i allowed to hurt your characters?" Now if in this scenario a new player wants to start out playing the drow that captures them, fully expecting to die as the evil donkeyhat the character is, should he/she then not be allowed to portray the canon setting? Because trust me, that charisma 18 bard will end up in the matriarcs bed, and it wont be because of seduction or concent.
@antonioscendrategattico23023 жыл бұрын
@@KamiRecca Seems to me like we're saying the same thing here. Yeah, reading the room is important even if there has been a session zero, miscommunications can still arise even afterwards so if that happens being sensitive to the needs of the other people at the table and avoiding making people uncomfortable in a way they don't explicitly want is important, and some topics should ALWAYS be discussed beforehand if you plan to introduce them in a campaign.
